Official 2012 Princess Half Marathon Thread!

Just found this thread! I am fairly new to running (started Jan 1) We just happened to be in Orlando during the WDW marathon weekend last January. As we were at dinner Sat. night seeing folks with medals around their necks my hubby says, "you know next year we could train enough for you to run the 1/2 and I could run the marathon". At that time I was like "yeah right". At that point I had been running exactly 1 week and could make about 1/4 mile without stopping. Now I'm regularly getting in 10-12 miles week at about 12 m/m. I have increased my mileage substantially, but hubby hasn't ;) , so a running buddy and I are considering the princess. So first question, a long run for me is about 5.5 miles, could I be ready to run 13.1 by Jan or Feb? Next question for those who have run both the WDW 1/2 and the Princess which is more fun for the runner? Are they equally "fun"? Does one offer something the other doesn't? I will say I like the timing of the WDW 1/2 better - we have 2 school age kiddos.
By the way I turn 40 this month - so this is my "birthday gift" to me - better condition that when I was 25 :cool1: Never too late to start running --I hope:)

Good report - did 6mi running (stopped 1/2 way for water/fuel) in 1:15 without any shin splint pain. Don't know if it was the Ktape or 2 ibuprofen, but either way it worked!!

I thought almost the same thing when we started to plan for this coming marathon weekend at the 2010 marathon weekend (We happened to be down there at the same time, but weren't running.) At the time I thought it would be a miracle if I could run the half in 2012 (I wasn't a runner at all!) Now I'm planning for Goofy in 4 months and have run 6 half marathons and a full marathon. If you have a 5.5 mile long run now, you can definitely be ready for princess, or marathon weekend! As far as the fun factor, they both run the same course. Someone who has run during both weekends might know better about the on course entertainment, but I think it is very similar for both races. Princess is themed towards women, so you'll be running with 95% women during the race.

Will be in Disney on Wed for both of my boys birthdays & already have my routes planned! DS will be 4 Wed and DS will be 7 on Sat. Hello MNSSHP!!! :cool1:

Nikki

Our kids share the same birthdays! My DS will be 6 Wed and my DD will be 4 on Sat.

Have a great trip celebrating those birthdays! :)

Are there a good amount of people who mostly walk the half marathons? I really want to do the princess 1/2 but I am just not a runner. I just don't want to be the only slow poke walking/jogging the whole thing.

I mostly walked the entire 1/2 marathon this year. After about 5 months of training, I was able to maintain a 14:30-15:00mm pace (until the last 2-3 miles).

But I wouldn't be so quick to say that you aren't a "runner". I thought the same thing, but I am 6 weeks into the Galloway plan now, & I am beginning to change my thinking! I may be slow, and I do run/walk intervals, but I completed an 8k, a half marathon, and - today - my first 5k!! Keep it up!!

YAY I PR'd my 5k this morning! I was wearing my WISH shirt and bondi band and team sparkle skirt. LOTS of compliments and encouragement because of that skirt. I loved hearing "Go Goldie Go"

Here is my race report for anyone interested..

Yes there are lots of walkers. If you can maintain the pace you can do it.

There are also a lot of people who run some, then walk some like me. I do 2 minutes running, 1 minute walking....works for me! You just have to gradually work up to that distance. Lots of training programs out there on how to walk a 1/2. Good luck....its a very fun race.

I am going to walk the Tinkerbell and possibly the Princess with my Mom - she is in the process of losing a lot of weight and I talked her into doing the Tinkerbell, but hope to talk her into the Princess so she can get her coast to coast. I don't feel comfortable with her doing intervals at this point, so the plan is to walk the entire thing. I have been able to maintain a 15 min. per mile pace on the treadmill before so I have no doubt that I can keep up our speed during the 1/2. I know quite a few Disney Runners that actually speed walk the entire thing in quite commendable times. So, don't feel bad if you want to walk the entire thing. It is a much better, lower impact workout anyway.

Woo-Woo! Haven't read the report yet but will go there next. At this rate, I may have a hard time keeping up with YOU at the Princess!:rotfl:

I think you can do it! I am going to follow the Galloway plan on run disney. My longest run so far is 7 miles. It is also my 40th birthday gift to me. I started running (consitently) in Jan as well. I have questioned doing the WDW half instead of the princess too. Timing is better for us too. But after talking to others about it, I am aiming for the princess. Haven't registered yet though. Still need to figure out what to do with the kids.

Great job! Loved your report. You did great!

It's a proven fact that running will strengthen your eyesight.

--It's amazing how one can spot a sprinkler 3/4 of a mile away while running in 90 degree weather......

Did 6.2 today, a little slower then normal but it's hot out and at least I got 'er done!

Happy running everyone!
Michele

That is so cool!

Michelle and Michele - I too will be celebrating a 40th!

And I have to pipe in last to the other Michele - I LOVE morning runs before the sun comes up; all the neighbors program their sprinklers to come on between 4 and 5am, so that's when you'll catch me running! Today I was caught by the sun (slept in today). Found out I don't particularly like the sun, especially without sunglasses. ...just call me Bella (Twilight reference)!

This makes me laugh - I went for 6.5 today and it was poor planning - hottest part of the afternoon - and when I was hitting around 4.5 I was passing the local park's "sprayground" - a bunch of fountains, mushrooms, et cetera that kids can run around in and get wet. Oh, if I had had a dollar on me, I cannot tell that I would not have run through that thing at least once!!!! :rotfl:

This made me laugh...not just because it's funny, but because I actually think it's true!

The other day I went to the eye doctor and since last year, my eye sight has improved.

Just finished a 5K with my PR of 14:11 pace. Won my age division (old ladies)! Now, if I could just do that sort of pace for the Princess, I would be set!

:cheer2:CONGRATULATIONS!!!:cheer2:

And yay for you, too, Julie! Loved your race report - you are too precious in your race attire.

I ran my very first 5K this morning.

I'm officially hooked on racing now. So much fun!

Happy training, Princesses!!!

I'm registered, booked my hotel, and just booked my flight for the weekend! All that's left to do is show up and run now!

I'm in!!! I'm so excited since I started training this week.

I'll be running by myself and I'll (hopefully) be staying at the All-Star Music resort. I haven't officially booked yet, though... :cutie:
