I can't seem to send any PM's! But I'm staying off property at Clarion Inn Buena Vista.

Mountaineer, tried to send you a PM. Can you give me more info for the Wounded Warrior 5K? I can't seem to find any info.

I sent you a PM with the race director's name, phone number and email. It's a government office so you might not get any info until Monday. It's the 3rd Annual 10k Warrior run and 5k Run/Walk. I keep calling it the Wounded Warrior because that's the group it supports. My best friend's niece received help from Wounded Warriors when her husband was killed in a training accident a few years ago.

So don't know if this has already been discussed, but has anyone tried kinesiology tape for injuries? Don't know if this was the cause, but got a new pair of shoes about a month ago & started getting shin splints. Went back to Nike's and doing better, but still getting a pain on the inside of my lower shin. Had success with Ktape with a neck injury so thought I'd try it with my leg. Taped up for tonight and will see how it holds up for 6 tomorrow!

Sorry if it seems like I'm complaining about my slow running times that are faster than some of the newer runners. I guess when you are used to running at a certain pace, even if you are only slightly slower and still at a respectable pace, anything less is a disappointment. Or at least it is to my overachieving slightly Type A personality! But remember, everyone here had to start from somewhere...personally I just started to really run about 6 months ago (well, I 'ran' for a few months last summer, but then took a few months off so I basically started from scratch this past February); and I've really only been consistent about running for about 2 months or so.

One thing is that I totally fall apart when I'm not on a treadmill. TOTALLY FALL APART. The unsmooth surface, the lacking of numbers in front of my face, the reliance on ME to control the pace, etc. I LIKE the treadmill - it's probably related to my controlling personality.

Anyway, all of that being said...I typically only compare myself to myself and if I'm not up to what I'm used to, I get irritated with myself. Here's a prime example: Tuesday I was exhausted and did NOT want to go to the gym and run 5 miles, so I made a deal with myself and if I could make it to 2.55 miles using intervals I could quit. It took a lot of walking intervals (and a few actual stops), but I made it to 2.55. Then I wanted to make it to 3.1 (and beat my time from Sunday), then I was going to go to 3.5, and then at 4 miles I figured that I might as well finish the distance for the day and wrapped up 5 miles in 47:48. Which, while it was a good time - great given the circumstances, I wasn't happy. Not because I knew that someone else ran faster, but because I knew that *I* ran faster last week.

There's a quote that I see often that really sums up what I'm trying to say in my very long winded way - "Run Your OWN Race."

(Sorry for the long winded comment.....)

I would recommend CW-X Compression tights for your legs - I know that many people go with the tape, but the compression tights have worked wonders for me. I had IT band issues, Achilles Tendonitis, tight calves and thighs and wearing those helped 100%. I actually played in the parks after the 1/2 Marathon last weekend which before was a bit impossible. In the past, I would have been forcing myself to do that, in pain but hiding it, and just hoping that I would wake-up and be able to move after going to sleep for the night. But, now I have zero worries! I love those things!! JMHO.

Yesterday was another run for me (I try to run Sunday (long), Tuesday, & Thursday) with a distance of 5 miles. And I killed it!

I think it was last week that I had set a personal goal of running 5 miles in less than 36:30...yesterday's run was in 36:32!!! I was THRILLED with that time! For more reasons that the fact that it's the fastest that I've ever run, but more so because I felt great during and after (not so much before!) and that I got the run done even though I really wasn't in the mood to run. I just kept running and running (I walked less than 4 minutes total) and I felt good.

That's the kind of runner I want to be!

That is so AWESOME :thumbsup2 Wow!!! And I've sat my lazy butt down all evening here, you inspire me to go run tomorrow morning!!

I did 3 miles yesterday after not running for almost 2 weeks since we were away in Disney. I had hoped to run while we were there but it just didn't happen. Too tired, and WAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY too humid and hot.

Has anyone had problems with the GPS not working with the RunKeeper app? I have an Android phone and lately the GPS will not work at all. Usually I need to be in a clear area, but even that's not working. I really rely on it for pacing myself. Sadly, I have no concept if I am going too fast.

I haven't, but when I did have problems in the past, I e-mailed runkeeper and they responded very quickly with the fix to my problem. So, hopefully they do the same. You may actually find a solution on their forum already.

Thanks! I didn't even know they had a forum. I think the problem was that the GPS function got turned of on my phone. DUUH. Hopefully it will work tomorrow. If not I'll email runkeeper.

Are there a good amount of people who mostly walk the half marathons? I really want to do the princess 1/2 but I am just not a runner. I just don't want to be the only slow poke walking/jogging the whole thing.

Substitute Spinning or Stationary Bike and Swimming workouts until you get better. Ultimately keeping up on your endurance with low impact exercises will help you continue the recommended plan but you were already so far in mileage that you really only need one long run to do well. Sending healing thoughts!!

Thanks, but I don't have a way to spinn or swim but today is the first day I can do something so I am going to ellitpical and hope that by next weekend I can run again.

I agree! I've said this before in this thread, but I have 0 concept of pacing and end up running a lot faster than I want to. I like the treadmill too, the only reason I don't like it is due to the boredom after about 30 minutes of staring at the same things--but I like constantly looking at the time!

I downloaded what I thought was Runkeeper a while ago for my Blackberry and the GPS function wouldn't work at all, so I only used it to time the run. Looking through the marketplace it doesn't look like it was ever on Blackberry, so I have no idea what I downloaded but it had a similar problem! I have no concept of pace whatsoever so I was hoping it would work for me. :(

I haven't run one yet, but if you skim through this thread you will see that there are people who walk the entire thing! If you keep up with the 16:00mm, no one will look at you any differently.

YES! It's my understanding that there are LOTS of people that walk the half - just make sure you can maintain the pace. I think it's a 16 minute mile? You'll see people of every shape and size, runners, walkers, joggers. You will *NOT* be the only one walking!

This is one reason why I am glad that I don't have access to a TM. It has forced me to get outside and do what I need to do. I use the CardioTrainer app on my phone and it does keep your pace, but mine seems a little wonky and lags, so I'm still not 100% sure that the pace I'm going is where I should be. It's forced me to be more in tune with my own sense of pacing. No TM has also forced my rear out the door in the freezing cold (okay, freezing to me in GA, although it DID snow last winter!:lmao:) and it makes me feel good about my discipline - that is linked to my pride, as last year was my first exp. with running and racing and I was NOT about to make an a** out of myself by not training b/c I was lazy. :rotfl:

But those that are sole TM runners shouldn't be too freaked out by the princess - remember, there's all sorts of stops for pictures, so your pacing might be a bit "off" anyway. Also, it's just SO flat (except for those **** on-ramps!) and you are running on road, not busted up paved or gravel trails. Also? It's just so fun that you really forget to be all uptight about stuff!!!

I use both a Garmin watch and RunKeeper on my Droid. RK is awesome because she talks to me and tells me when to walk or run for EACH interval (she also tells me to do a 5 min walk for warm up & cool down). I LOVE it! However, it can stop working and miss some miles or time, but she has never stopped. More than once, time/mileage is less than the Garmin. I use the Garmin for time/distance and heart monitoring. I LOVE that too!

Will be in Disney on Wed for both of my boys birthdays & already have my routes planned! DS will be 4 Wed and DS will be 7 on Sat. Hello MNSSHP!!! :cool1:

Not sure if anyone else has listed the "Disney Princess Half Marathon" as their RACE on RunKeeper, but here is the link: http://runkeeper.com/race/disney-princess-half-marathon-87/16119. Not sure if it will get automatically deleted or not by the blog master. lol

If you do not have a smart phone, you can still have a Run Keeper account and manually enter in all your activities: running, walking, hiking, cycling, snowboarding, rowing, etc.

As of yet, there are only 28 people attending the Half and I am the only Nikki. Friend me and we can motivate each other! :dance3::dance3:
