I am looking at a 10k in November too, just two weeks after returning from vacation, eek! It should be quite cool here by then, any tips for cool weather running, say in the range of 40-55 degrees?

Pj

I would start gathering or collecting a nice variety of throw away clothes for races with cool starting temps. If it is 40, you should dress like it is 55, and if it is 55, you should dress for 70. I have a collection of cheap knee high socks that I picked up at target to use as arm warmers before races and can toss without breaking the bank. I cut a hole in the toe so I can slide my hand all the way through. I also have some sweaters that I was going to donate because they were either too big or not my style anymore that I'm just hanging on to until a cool race. Most races usually donate throw aways around here, so I don't feel bad tossing it at a race.

I also collected a bunch of baggy sweatpants at walmart when they were on clearance at the end of the season last year. Those I'm saving more for Disney races where I know I'll be outside in the cool air for awhile before the race.

Thanks for the tip about knee high socks! My main concern with my 10k in November is how cool it could be before the race. Once I get going it's not a problem, but I don't have any throw away-type clothes. I'm too attached to everything I have.

Princesses - I have GREAT news!!! I GOT THE NEW JOB!!!!! :woohoo:

Which means.... I CAN DEFINATELY DO THE PRINCESS!!!!!!! princess:

This weekend my family and I will start making our trip plans!! I am so happy now this dream is becoming a reality!!!

YAY!!! :yay:

Congratulations! That is so exciting!

Thanks!

I now know to keep some of my baggier work out stuff now, instead of throwing/donating as I lose more weight.

Love the sock idea too, my arms aren't shrinking like the rest of me, at least the upper part, so a soft stretchy sock would be great.

You want to stay warm before the race, so if you have someone coming to watch that you could toss a jacket to right before the start, that might be another option. I always check the clearance racks at Walmart for cheap stuff too.

Thanks!

I saw someone use socks as arm warmers when I first started running, and that it was genius. Nice, warm, and cheap.

Glad it's going well, princesses! Also deciding to do a 10K beforehand, in December. A Holiday Run in Venice, CA. Basically to get out of the walkers' corral.

Bought a pair of new "barefoot" type shoes, but wondering whether to use them or a more sturdy style for 13 miles? Will I need more support as I get more tired? Anyone who's tried both types, I would like to hear from you!

And ack, I am becoming a true runner now, with the onset of foot problems. My foot could model for a podiatry class. I have few hangups about wearing a bikini, but the thought of people viewing my feet absolutely terrifies me! Right now I have regular and blood blisters, a partial toenail growing back after the last one fell off, and incredibly cracked heels. Living in the desert, but scared to wear sandals, what's a chica to do ....

Other than that, plowing ahead and looking forward to February!

Had a nice morning run already. 70 degrees is much cooler than what we've had here in SC. Smooth sailing. Love the Galloway intervals. Im thinking I can do this now!:cheer2:

I can't help with the blisters but there's a great moisturizing cream called "no Crack" that works great on dry feet (ask at a pharmacy counter- it seems local pharmacies are usually more willing to order special stuff but your mileage may very), and a little toenail polish over the offending nail will also help- (unless someone just stares at your feet). I've used the nail polish thing alot! - of course don't paint an open wound.

Here's a link to the No Crack http://www.nocrack.com/default.htm

Anyone else have a great moisturizing cream?

I wish I had to motivation to get up early and run! We've had cooler weather here the past week or so. It's getting me really excited for fall!

Ran what was suppose to be 8 miles on Saturday but was probably closer to 8.5 or 9 because (I started running with a group- some are faster and some slower) when I found myself alone I got a little off course but I made it back to the start point alive:thumbsup2. Ran my short runs tuesday 2miles and yesterday 3.1- but everything hurt from my knees downward during that run-will try not to run back to back days but hubby wanted to run with me since his bike ride was rained out and Fl weather was noticably cooler after the rain. Even for what I think was a bad run yesterday time was 32.25 and I had already did 5 miles on the eliptical at the Y.

Me too! It was about 68 when I started at 6:30 - 90% humidity, though. Tues was 5 degrees cooler and I felt the difference. I am looking forward to some cooler temps.

You can definitely do this! :yay:

It's amazing, though, how getting up and getting the miles done with makes the whole day seem better somehow. I don't have to be at work until 8:30-8:45 so I get an hour or so to play. :)

I'm heading back to Boston for a week next month for a workshop and I can't wait to run outside! The hard part about Texas summers is they don't end Labor Day weekend, and I'm programmed to think Fall will hit at that point. I could run outside midday and not want to die from the heat :goodvibes

I'm with you! I'll be running the DL half in just about 2.5 weeks and I absolutely cannot wait to get out there in those early am low 60's!!! I'm telling you, I really don't know how I've survived the training this summer without face-planting in the dirt out there! But, when I catch my breath and wipe the slimy sweat from my eyes I think, if I can survive this, I can survive anything! (and then I dump any remaining water in my bottles over my head)

Regarding the shoes - I have a pair of Vibram Bikilas, and I haven't worked up to more than 7 or 8 miles at a time in them. (Except for the last 10.5 of a trail ultra, but that was more walking than running by that point.) Minimalist shoes take some getting used to - if you are going to something like the Vibram, I really recommend treating your Vibram runs almost as a seperate C25k program - run very short runs in the new shoes a couple times per week, and build up that milage slowly. (I learned this the hard way!)

As for the feet - take pride in your feet! Most people pamper their feet, and never really use them. Consider blisters, blood blisters, missing toenails, etc as marks of pride, won on the roads and the trails.

My first really sore toe is now black, I rubbed that puppy with nail polish remover, thinking it was just left over polish (even though I had on pale pink.) I love it, my mother is concerned about it, lol.

I was so proud when I lost my first toe nail. I did not mention it to friends who don't run because it sounds weird, but I was. Now it's grown back, but it has this really funky texture. Nail polish!

Yeah, I usually don't wear polish, then I noticed a dark purple/black toenail, so I knew something was up. As it was odorless, I knew it was not fungus at least. It slowly worked its way off. No real pain, but for about a week before and after it fell off, the area felt really sensitive and weird because you usually dont "feel" in your toes! But once it was off, there was already a new one growing underneath, so all was fine.

I wear polish now, to cover nasty toes and also I found it's a good way to know if a toenail is dying, because then the colored part of the nail doesnt push upwards. As for blisters, usually it's better not to pop, unless you can't be comfortable in a bandage and good sock/shoe.

At least that's what I have learned. Can never be too careful with those tootsies!!

On another note, what is the parking like at Disney? Is it free and/or easy for those not in a Disney hotel? This will affect where I plan to stay. Thanks!!!

WHAT??????? :scared1: Y'all lose toenails????? OK that just kinda freaked me out! Is that normal? I haven't ever lost a toenail and now I'm a little scared!! Am I about to start losing toenails??? Does it hurt? Do they grow back? YIKES!!!!

I started getting sore toes at 3 miles and now at 4 miles, my toe is blackish.

Parking is not free at Disney park if you are not staying on property. I believe it is $10 per vehicle per day. If you are staying at a Disney hotel, you get a free parking pass.

As far as ease - it depends on who you ask. The traffic going to the races in the morning can be pretty heavy, but I think it is doable if you leave early enough.
