Official 2012 Princess 1/2 marathon thread part 2

For those of you in the Boston area...the registration for the Distance Medley opened this morning. I'm all registered :)

The short version of the medley is that you register (and run/complete) all 3 of the open BAA events (5k in April, 10k in June, and half in October) and at the end you get a special medal for completely the Distance Medley. One MAJOR benefit is that by registering for the medley, you are registering for all 3 races at once - and as someone who missed the half last year because it sold out hours after it opened, that was a HUGE perk for me!

I've only run one BAA event, last year's inaugural 10k, but I'm excited for the medley. Might just be the motivation I need to get my butt in gear!

So I know a few people have mentioned that they were going to be tapering down after the 11 mile a couple of Saturdays ago. If that is the case what would you be running this weekend? Galloway calls for 12.5 but I was wondering what everyone is panning to run this weekend. Thanks!

I tweaked Galloway's plan a little to fit my preferences. Last year I wanted the first time I completed a half to be at the race so in my training I ran 12.5 miles 2 weeks before the race and tapered after that. It worked well so that is what I am doing this year as well.

The rest of my training looks like this 11 miles this weekend, 3 the next, 12.5 the next, 3 the next, and then the half. I will do 2 short runs during each week.

Merci

I am running 11 miles this weekend, depending on how I'm feeling. I'm getting over being sick right now, and don't want to push it.

My plan is this for the last few weekends left:
12 miles
4 miles
10 or 12 miles (Galloway says 14, but I also feel like I want to complete my first 13.1 miles AT the race to make it even more special)
4 miles
RACE!!!!

I'm doing a "training race" this weekend. 3M half in Austin.

So I will be doing the 13.1 this weekend.

If it feels good enough, then I will do one more long run in 2 weeks (where Galloway says 14) It may be 14, but I will be good with 10-11.

If this 13 is a huge struggle and suckage abounds, then I plan on trying to get 2 more long runs in before I taper. I'll do 10-11 and then another 12-13 on back to back weekends.

I like the Zensahs! I have BIG calves and wear the S/M sleeves. So go for the XS if they are available.

I'm going for the 12.5 this weekend, but I plan to do it pretty slowly. I'm thinking 16mm.

Putting on my runlove compression socks this AM after a 3.6 mi just to see how they feel. My concern is that they are not tight at all???? By no means am I rolling them on. They pull on very easily. They are cute, but, come only in one size. I am thinking I need a pair that comes in sizes (I have skinny calves with little muscle, but, they are getting more muscular :) ) Does anyone have recommendations for smaller sized compressionn socks? Looking at the Zensah ones everyone is talking about. Looks like they are sized. Any others you can recommend in a smaller size?

I have the opposite problem as you with the run love socks, I am tall and have muscular calves so they are tight (which is good) but too short on me. I wish they had more than one size in them, and I even mentioned that on their FB page, but my comment got deleted... :sad1: I wear recovery sock brand now, and they fit me well, but I'm not sure if sizing is for foot size or calf size. I am wanting to try the zensah brand as well since they have so many fun colors. Hopefully someone will have them at the expo so I can decide in person!

if you are on the fence about going all the way up to 14 miles, i would say there's no real need for it, especially if it's your first race. getting up to 12, or even 10, would be plenty to get you across the finish line. for my first half marathon that i ran, my goal was to simply finish without walking. i only ran three times a week (3-5 miles at a time) and only made it up to 9 miles for my long run.

the theory about going up to 14-16 miles is the longer runs help build your endurance, so you can race 13.1 miles faster. but (and this is just my persoal opinion) i think you also should have the running base to support it. one thing i really don't like about the galloway plans is that he seems to disregard the 50% rule (your long run should be no more than 50% of your weekly mileage. so if you have 14 miles planned, your mileage should be the very least 28 miles per week.) just something to think about as you plan your sched, especially if you are injury-prone!

hope everyone's training is going well...in the home stretch now!!

I did not know this little nugget of running goodness. Thank you for sharing it! Always good to learn tips to make sure that I make it to the start (and finish) line injury free!

I am doing 11 tomorrow, then long runs of 4, 12, 4, then the princess. I have also decided I want my first time doing 13.1 to be at the Princess. I think it will make it even more special. I have done 10 miles twice so far, so I feel I will be ready. I am also going to take it really slow, 15:30-16 minutes per mile.

So I do have a slight horror story about waking up. Luckily, it has a happy ending.

Last year at the Princess 1/2, my alarm clock, which happened to be my iphone, didn't go off. Luckily, I have one of those handy internal alarm clocks and woke myself up. When I checked the time I was behind and I immediately jumped out of bed and luckily didn't miss the bus and got to the race. It definitely got my heart racing and woke me up!

And of course the happy ending to the story... I finished, got my medal, and ended up inspiring my good friend who was with me to do this year's princess!

I did the Princess as well last year with my neice.
We set at least 3 alarms to go off at 3:00AM!
I would suggest doing at least 1 and a wake up call too!!!

I'm running the Tinkerbell this weekend, so I have only two more small milage training runs left.
When I'm done with Tinkerbell I'll jump back into the longer weekend training runs of 10, 11 and 12 until the Princess.

I will be getting my Coast to Coast medal at the Princess. Woo hoo! :cool1:

Good luck everyone on training.
Check out the Tinkerbell thread to see how we are all doing.
The excitement is building with it only being 4 days away!!! :yay:

My long runs are on Wednesdays, so I completed 11 today. :cool1: I plan to back off a bit next week and do 4 or 5, then 12 the following week. The Wednesday after that I'll be starting the drive to see Mickey!

I didn't know about that 50% rule, either, and certainly haven't been following it. Thanks for the advice, fashionista311.

Did you try Runningwarehouse? They have a WISH discount code (Wishraced) I think- 15% off and free shipping- they are fast too!

Sleep- I am usually ok with sleeping before a race. Last year I think I went to be around 8 or 9 (old and pregnant- it was easy to do! lol) and was up by 2:45 and out to the bus by 3:15. My little sister was a little harder to get going though! She would probably do better to just stay up all night, run, and then come back and sleep. She's one of *those* people. I am a morning person all the way, so up and moving isn't too hard. Try to talk to me after 10pm though, and not sure I make a lot of sense!

ASICS 2160 fans, I just got some from Running warehouse for $57 with the WISH code..... they still had lots of sizes.

Am I the only crazy person checking my spam mail box every two hours just in case the waivers are put up and it gets sent to the spam??? I feel like I've gone insane. This is going to be a long month! And I have to go to the Daytona 24 with my husband this weekend, so I have no idea when I will get my long run in. 24 hours of cars going in circles...woooo...but at least I will get several miles of walking in! We thought about doing the 5K, but it would have required us getting there a day earlier. I can only take so much sports car racing.

I have been checking my Spam folder like crazy too. I can't wait.

Just did 11.11 miles in a 13:30 pace. Wanted to stay in the 12's but I will take it! I also am going to keep the actual 13.1 "special" for the princess! I've thought this all along. Theres something about finishing my goal on that specific day that sounds so rewarding!

Dig Deep everyone! By the way I'm getting my "saying" tattooed before the princess on my wrist. I'll post a pic once I get it!

I might be going solo to princess after all. My SIL is supposed to come but got pregnant right before marathon weekend. After doing the marathon at disney a few weeks ago she's not sure her doctor will okay her for the 1/2 in a few weeks since she's been having some minor complications. I'm kind of bummed, but at least now I have my own schedule and can hopefully make it to the meet, whenever it is!

Either someone on this board or the FB page saved their e-mail from last year and it was dated Feb. 11th, so you still have some time! It IS going to be a long month, but Julie and I are having fun making our park plans and talking about rides and such - not focusing so much on the race! Pretty much obsessing about airfare right now, but my husband is trying to talk me off the ledge and convincing me it will go down again in the next week. :headache:

I wonder if this thread will get so long that it will get locked by the moderators and we will need a part 3...

I've been checking the website at least twice a day instead. I get a lot of junk mail. I'm thinking they'll get through the Tink, then get ready for this one. One month from tomorrow :goodvibes
