Official 2012 Princess 1/2 marathon thread part 2

Colleen, there's is a desk at the Expo near where you get registration and your goody bags when you check in labeled "Cheer Squad". It was every easy to find. Last year my sister registered for it, got her cheersquad tshirt and chair and it took all of 2 minutes. I can't remember if there was a wrist band or not (I'm guessing yes).

Thanks for the info Jennifer! :thumbsup2

OK Princesses!! I DID IT tonight!! The whole shebang!! Something amazing happened at the Y tonight - I did 13.1 on the treadmill with 3 potty breaks (1 of which took a little longer... I know, TMI!) Done in just short of 3 hrs!!

I FEEL FANTASTIC!!!

Now I want to taper off a little, since now I KNOW I can do it, I can relax just a little LOL

princess:

That's awesome!! Way to go getting it done on the treadmill! You ROCK!!

To Lauren, Congrats on the pregnancy. Every pregnancy is different. Just because you are not having any symptoms, doesn't mean anything is wrong. Enjoy feeling good!

Can I ask? Is everyone doing straight running or if you do that long on the treadmill, are you doing running/walking intervals?

Has anyone gone with only 1 potty break or is that not a good idea b/c you're not getting enough fluids?

I usually do run/walk. 1:30 min run, 1 min walk. I finished my last half in 2:44 with that strategy.

I have never had a potty break ever, in any run or race including up to 21 miles, and it doesn't seem to have bothered me at all? I've never had any symptoms of dehydration either.

I don't do potty breaks either. I did a 10 miler and 12 miler in December and both times, I went to the bathroom once I arrived to the beach (I was visiting my folks in California) before I started my run and I was fine for the 2 hours-2 hours and 20 minutes that I was running both times. I ran with a water bottle and refilled it two times (I think it was a 16 oz bottle).

For some reason when I am on the treadmill and know there is a bathroom close by I have to take a break. But when I am outside with non around I am fine.

Last year for the princess, I used the bathroom at the big holding area before the long walk and then again right before the corrals. I got water at every water station during the race and never used the bathroom and felt fine.

I don't know if it's because I went to a gym that opens an hour earlier than the location I normally go to, but I had to go at mile 2, but sucked it up and didn't until after I was done with my 11. I didn't want to leave my treadmill since I got prime real estate right in front of Sportscenter.

Man, I'm jealous.

I think my problem with the potty breaks comes in on race day more than any other day.

I'm now at the point that I've run enough events that I don't think I'm having anxiety-induced bathroom runs, but without fail, I have to go tons of times between the time I get to the start line and when the race actually starts... which of course usually tumbles into course time. I am thinking that it may be due to most mornings of race day, I'm out there waiting to start almost as long as I usually will take for a training run.

If anyone has any secrets to staying adequately hydrated without constant potty breaks, I'd LOVE to hear them since this is a HUGE problem for me.

I think the bathroom break thing depends on how long you're out there for, rather than mileage. For me, I usually don't have to stop for runs that are shorter than 14 miles. Anything longer, I usually need just one stop. I also go to the bathroom approximately 50 times before I leave the house :lmao: Of course this is just a general statement - I've had days when I've had to stop on my short weekly runs.

If you are taking many bathroom breaks, you may actually be over-hydrating, which can be just as dangerous as under-hydrating. Three bathroom breaks for 3 hours does sound like a lot. I actually read something a little while back that said over-hydrating was a much bigger concern than dehydration for marathoners, especially slower ones. I would totally believe it. No one ever really thinks about drinking too much, just too little.

Here's a quick read on the topic

Be safe out there ladies!

When I was training for the Disneyland 1/2 this past year, I had to do my last 12 mile training run on the treadmill (I had never run over 6 on the treadmill before).
I only took only potty break in the middle at the 1/2 way point. And I was fine.
I also brought some gummy life savers and sucked on them throughout the run.

I've run 6 half marathons this past year and a half. I've only stopped twice MAX for potty breaks during the run (usually stopping only once). And I usually get a small amount of water at each water stop. Then I use GU around mile 8 or 9. If they don't carry the kind that I normally use, then I use my own (I always carry my own just in case).

Slow chick checking in here... fwiw, my 21 miles took me almost 5 hours!

Again, I have never had to do a bathroom stop. I drink 64-150oz of water each of the 2 days before my long run, and a large cup of coffee before the run (long runs for me are usually AM and coffee is non-negotiable). I usually go once just before starting the run.

My running club provides water on the course and I wear a water belt. I usually drink approx 1-2 of the small bottles per hour, more if it's hot.

Most of my longer training runs have been 14-16mm, depending on weather. NC in the summer means slowing waaay down sometimes and hydrating more, including salt tablets.

In regards to the bathroom thing, I think for me it is mostly mental. I run on a trail that goes by 2 parks with facilities, but I rarely stop. I think it's just enough for me to know they are there. On my last long run, I thought about stopping several times, but when I hit a walk break, I didn't really feel like I needed to go anymore. Of course, as soon as I would start running again, then I would feel like it!:confused3 Suffice it to say, I haven't wet myself yet! :rotfl2: I've only done one other half, and I didn't have to stop for that or any of my 10Ks, but I make darn sure I go right before the start. At the Princess last year, I overhydrated. While it didn't make me sick (which can happen) I did feel like I had to pee constantly and I continued doing that a good bit of the rest of the day. Granted, this is a 41 year old bladder that has had 3 kids squeeze on it, but I think I just drank at EVERY water stop and it just wasn't necessary for me. I was also prob. paranoid due to not knowing when the next potty would show up. This year I will be much better able to hold it since I think there are plenty of potty opps along this course.

Great job! It's always nice to hear of someone reaching a new mileage. Gives me some inspiration :goodvibes

Thanks for the reassurance. I keep trying to tell myself since I had a girl last time with some sickness that no sickness means I'm having a boy. :goodvibes

FREEPIXIE....CONGRATS! I bow to your endurance on the TM! :worship::worship::worship:

As for water and me....I am a drinker...I love my water. I also sweat bullets and am that exerciser with the bright red face. I also like to go alot...however, during the 3 1/2 Marathons I ran in my life, I stopped 2 of the 3 to go. First one, I had to go and I went somewhere around the middle of the race, granted it was pouring rain about the first 1/3 so I was a little chilly.......Second temps were like 31 with a wind and I think I was SO cold I had to just keep going. Third, princess last year, I stopped in Tomorrowland more because it was a REAL bathroom and I was able to splash some water on my face.....oh and that water felt wonderful! I did take a sip or 2 of water at every stop.....and at the end after I got my medal it hit me I had to go. I never even thought about it otherwise and it took e 3:29 to finish last year. I was cursing Disney as the Port A potties were out in the parking lot, I had a blister and my foot was killing me, so I had to hobble a ways to find the bathroom....and man were they RIPE! :rotfl: I had gone to the bathroom before we left the hotel and then when we were at the Corrals, short lines up by Corral A! I am also the type I get nervous and just need to go, so that waiting around doesn't help....but once I am off, I am good to go. Never have to stop during a 10k and my 9 miler this weekend, I didn't stop either.......drank almost a 32oz bottle of water on the run as well.

Speaking of the 9 miler.....my knee is hurting today when I go down the stairs. That little ankle twist DARN YOU. Got in 2.3 today with some other exercise including stretching, so hoping this knee thing will heal. If its still bothering me Thursday no running resting up. My calves are tight too, so thinking about getting some compressions sleeves off of Running Warehouse with the Disboard discount....they have my shoes on clearance so might as well get them while getting my new shoes.

I really can't believe how close we are getting - or that I did 9 miles for that matter. Before you know it, we will all be seeing the starting line fireworks!

I just posted my pictures from the WDW 1/2 on my blog if anyone is interested. It's the same course as princess, but luckily it'll start getting light out sooner than it does in January. I was bummed that my pictures from MK are dark because the sun wasn't fully up yet.

As far as hydrating and RR stops during races. I'm usually fine without a stop during a 1/2. I stopped during the WDW half at mile 10, but probably could have waited until the finish if I wasn't taking the 1/2 extra slow to keep my legs fresh for the full. During the full I think I was either over hydrated or dehydrated. I had symptoms of being dehydrated after the race, but I was taking a cup of water and poweraide at every aide station and had to stop to pee twice so I think I was taking in too many fluids during the race because it started to get warm towards the finish.

The way I've been training, I run as long as my body will let me (usually 2-3 miles straight) then take a walk break, then run again... etc... I'm not really following any given plan, I call it my "Run Forrest Run" plan lol like Forrest Gump when he was running, he just run til he didn't feel like running no more :goodvibes

Potty breaks -- for me, as my mileage was increasing I was getting nervous which caused my bladder to overact. So I am sure the day of the Princess I will be hitting a LOT of potties :lmao:

I can't bring myself to do it at the gym, lol:rotfl:! I wake up at 3 just so I can leave to go to the gym at 4!!!!!:rotfl2:
