Official 2011 Wine & Dine Half and Relay Thread

This will be my first race checking a bag. What do you put in yours?

And I am going to wear a spibelt for my phone and was thinking I would also need my id and room key. Would I need cash or a credit card - or just use my room key for charging any food or drinks at the after party?

If I could give you all one piece of advice, it would be DO NOT BRING A BAG. The Disney baggage pick up was NOT GOOD. There were reports of it taking 30-60 minutes after people crossed the finish line to get there baggage.

I have done two Disney half marathons since, and the bag check worked flawlessly. That being said, if you can get a non running friend to carry your stuff for you, its one less thing to worry about.

As Rm317 indicated the last W&D bag check was a bad joke. That being said, you can almost bet your future on this year being as seamless as it can be considering the logistics of handing a bag off, moving them and resorting them once back at the finish.

What to put in? Generally, the checked bag is for clothing used before heading out to the race and for clothing wanted post run. Frankly, the pre-race will not be an issue so little or no need there. So it becomes a post race needs bag. I would have a dry shirt, possibly socks and anything else you may want. Do not put your room key or anything of value in the bag.

Do not make any final plans until closer to the race. It will be good to see the finish area set up once finalized. Once the program comes out you will have a better understanding of the logistics of how the finish area will operate. Then you can decide on whether to check a bag or hand it to your sherpa.

Has anyone made any ADR's as a group before or after the race? I don't remember anyone mentioning it and am scared to try to go back through the whope thread ;)

I made breakfast reservations (late) at Boma for the morning of the race but was wondering if anyone else had given any thought to getting together before or after, or if I had missed it? I am getting really excited.. Now I just need to run more...lots more:rotfl:

Gotcha. That is what I thought you meant. I will have to try powerade soon.

Thank you for all the help in knowing what to expect! This thread is a treasure!!!

I only come in for the weekend...in the past to enjoy F&W, now to race AND enjoy F&W (my how my life has changed!). I love to munch my way around the WS, so no ADR's for me! I'll pack some peanut butter and whole wheat bread and buy some fruit for my post-race breakfast. I'll make up the rest of my protein/carb/fat/alcohol intake at F&W.:rotfl:

rundisneymom - Thanks! I have never been to F&W before, so this is my first race and first F&W trip. I made reservations for b-fast the day of the race because I figured I would need a good meal several hours before.

Are you going to Epcot the day of the race? I don't know if I should go to a park or if I should take it easy and relax the day of the race. I have never even run a 5K or anything so I don't know how to "get ready". I thought I might go the day after...but maybe I'll be too tired....;)

I am running the 5K and DH is running the 1/2. We plan to go to the 5K and then spend the day relaxing at the hotel pool. We will head into DTD for a late lunch/early dinner, more relaxing at the hotel and then head to EPCOT and the start line. :)

After last year, we moved our lunch reservation up this year to 11:30 on Saturday. We plan to head to HS for the morning for a couple of hours, eat lunch at Tutto Italia, stroll over to Beach Club and take a nice nap. I will then grab a banana or bagel before heading to the race. I try to time everything as I do with a morning race and last year my wife and I both still felt full close to race time. It is always different for everyone so try to time things the same as you normally do.

First, hi to all the thread newbies!! Its not easy for me to go back and forth between thread pages but I know there are a handful of new people - HI!!! :yay:

I believe there is someone who specifically mentioned a running plan with hopes to finish the half in about an hour and a half? ACK! You go, girl!

I have been away for a few days (i.e. not in front of my computer) but I am still running like a mad fool. My exercise program is typically like this:

Monday - rest
Tuesday - 6 miles treadmill, 9 MPM pace
Wednesday - rest
Thursday - 7 miles outside, 10.5 MPM pace
Friday - 7 miles outside, 10.5 MPM pace
Saturday - rest
Sunday - 8 miles outside, 11 MPM pace

I am trying to up my Sunday runs gradually, and sometimes I do more treadmill then outside runs. Sometimes I skip a run day altogether and replace it with a rest day, and sometimes I do 3 miles (30 minutes) on the threadmill and then an hour with some light weights for my arms and abs. I am still trying to lose a little more weight (at 145 lbs now, 5'4" [roughly a size sml or 6-8] and I would like to get to 115 lbs and maybe a size 2-4 - I suppose that might be unrealistic, and I would be happy with 130 lbs). But anyways... that was probably way too much information.

New peeps - are you interested in a W&D shirt? I am trying to get a head count cause I am designing one and it would be fun to identify others on the thread in this way. It will be hot pink, some sort of coolmax running shirt, with probably black graphics/lettering. I hope to have pics soon.

I am having my SO carry a bag for me for after the race. Given how much I sweat (and then shiver from cold), I will likely pack a new bra, clean shirt, new underwears, new pants, new socks, new shoes, my hairbrush, lipstick, facial wipes, chapstick, and maybe a favorite snack or beverage just so I can count on a fun goody when I finish. I don't really WANT to bring a brand new change of clothes, but I will be soaked otherwise - especially with the humidity of Florida I am expecting, which likely will be a new experience for me given the crisp, rainy air of Oregon I am used to.

I forget who all is staying at POFQ, but I am pretty sure a number of us are. Maybe we can meet at the WWOS bus Saturday evening and ride to the start line together?

Hugs to everyone! - Carey

Hi Everyone,

I've been following this thread for several weeks now, but am finally going to jump in!

I'm SUPER excited to be registered for this years W&D race. I completed the WDW Half back in 2006, but haven't done a race since then.... life, kids, life, more kids, life... everything seemed to get in the way. We're finally are done growing our family though and its time for mom to take a breather and do something for herself.

I'm a walker only... last time around I finished in 3:12, but this time my training period is shorter and my *ahem* weight is much higher... so I'm just hoping to finish and not get swept. Tonight I did my 2 mile walk and was able to keep a sub-15 minute pace so if I can keep that up, I think I'm safe.

Looking forward to sharing this journey with you all... this thread has been very motivating to me over the past few weeks and I'm happy to be a part of it.

We are flying in on Friday night and plan to just hang around the hotel (POFQ) all day on Saturday. Then we have park hoppers for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

Welcome Megan! I'm a walker too. Great to have you with us!

One nice thing about doing my training in 95+ degree heat...race day is going to feel downright frigid!

I'll be packing a change of clothes, a ball cap, flip flops, some baby wipes, a hand towel and some deodorant into my baggage claim bag. Maybe a 5 hour energy. :) After that, its on to the beer...it's natures sports drink, you know! Electrolytes, carbs for replenishment, alcohol for the aches and pains....heck, make it a Guinness and you've got all sorts of vitamins and minerals too. :thumbsup2

Carey, you continue to amaze me! I have my first "longer" run on Monday - will be the first time doing more than a 5 K (we are running an 8K).... Getting a bit frustrated with myself and the training. While I am able to improve my times, I am not able to go longer. I mean Yay for faster times, but that isn't going to help me get to 13 miles.

And, I REALLY wish I could look forward to running. I still dread it, which is kinda sad at this point.

Is the time limit a suggestion or is it enforced? Last year there were a lot of people that finished over the limit (according to the results).

I haven't done this race in the past so I don't know from first hand experience...But I did read in one of the threads (maybe somewhere back in this one) that once they hit the 9 mile mark - which was in DHS - they were off the Disney roads for the remainder of the race and the sweepers were much more generous. I don't know if this will hold true this year with the finish line moved to the front of EPCOT...I haven't looked at the race map, but doesn't that mean that at some point we will have to get back on the Disney roads again to get to the finish line?

Yes it is enforced. I have read a few reports noting the sweepers were picking up folks in AK parking at the relay exchange area (mile 5 ish). That would be an obvious point along with the point where you start the out at back segment at Osceola and World (both directions).

As I stated in a previous post you may have some pacing flexibility once into the Studios -Mile 9. That is the point where you leave roadways and are no longer a traffic target. The RD must open streets within his permit time frame so that is the reason you see a stricter compliance with pacing until then.

Note that the previous statement is based on historical observation and every once in a while the race folks throw a wrench into pacing enforcement. So YMMV.

Also, note that I did a very unscientific study of runners on the last 3-4 pages of the W&D. While these runners did go significantly past the 3:30 time if you look at the intermediate pacing you will see most runners were below the 16 minute pacing through 10k and most through 15k. Its the last 6k that seemed to have affected them. Going back to historic practices, the finisher list would have been pared back to reflect 'official' finishers by this point. Many runners on the last couple pages would have disappeared following past practices.... so things do change.

Hi Dagny! Thanks for the kind words. :) I agree that a faster pace is kinda a 'whoopdee doo' if you are having difficulties getting 13 miles. For me, after 8 miles my legs start to feel different - like I really am ready to stop - and that worries me because that's just over half of what the W&D is and I am hoping I will be able to push myself to keep going as well.

A few things I do to keep myself moving when I get to 8 miles and want to stop:

1) I have a select few songs on my DROID that specifically are faster paced and really make me want to move. I turn one of those on if I am ready to stop, and it helps me to keep going.

2) While in general I try to just RUN the 8 miles without any walking, I will do walk/jog intervals and sometimes this helps to get my stamina back. I find sometimes that it also makes me want to keep walking (thereby defeating the purpose), but I do it anyway.

3) I switch up the scenery. I DO NOT multiple loop things because I can calculate how many more times I have to go around to meet my goal and I hate that. I much prefer to run to a point 4 miles away, and run back. Therefore, home is my goal. I HAVE to get there because that's where I live. Thus, I HAVE to finish 8 miles, like it or not.

4) I don't really LOVE running either. I like how I feel after, but actually running is up and down. My main reward, though? I look awesome in jeans with a tight shirt tucked in and belted. And then I can take my little self to an ice cream parlor and have a scoop and not feel guilty. And when I by a t-shirt I have to by a small, or sometimes an extra small. And when I walk uphill to the barn to feed my horse, I am no longer winded. And even though I am taken, I get hit on and looked at and called 'skinny' and 'tinny' and 'wee' and 'cute' and 'adorable' and yeah any woman knows that feels good. And my time on the road is MY time. No work, no chores, no bills, not troubles - just me and my tunes and my shoes and the road. And I worked hard to get here and I owe it ENTIRELY to running. So in that sense, I love running.

You can do it!
