Official 2011 Princess Half Thread Part II!!!

Sounds like you have a lot going on..
My only problem with a Long LR is my fear of injury. That's why I have 10-12 and 8-10 runs. If I feel something (i.e. IT band) tweeking then I'm going to cut it on the short side and ice and take Aleve. The race is my goal.

I see from another post you have been to a sports dr. so perhaps you have something that "tweeks" too. I'm not young or old (ok, I'll be 50 in a few months) and have only been running 3 years.

I'm sure you will do great:)

Thank you for your comments. I think I will ease back to your schedule because the race is my goal too. I don't want to get hurt. I am 45 and I know things start to snap off, so I better watch it. LOL

My knees hurt a bit from patella malalignment and arthritis. Physical therapy fixed most of it. My knees are a lot stronger than last year. I am a newb regarding running, so I really appreciate hearing your experiences. :)

Oh, and thanks for the info about the Expo!!

I am questioning if my training is aggressive enough. I have run 8.5 miles as my longest to date run. I am planning on upping that mileage by 1 mile per week until the week prior to the Princess 1/2. That will bring my long run to 11 miles (maybe 12). I am new to running so I cannot make huge leaps each week and need a day to recover after a long run. I continue to struggle getting my weekly miles in and only continue to frustrate myself knowing I need to be getting the miles in. Am I on the right track or do I need to make major changes in the month prior to the race?

If you're just looking to finish, get yourself up to 10 and you'll be fine. You might hit a bit of a wall at 10, but adrenaline will get you through. If you're looking for a specific time, try to make sure you get in some 3-5 mile runs & speed work, as Joan says.

I'm like you--I need at least a day to recover after a long run. Sometimes getting them in is a struggle, but worth it. I was doing PT for a knee injury and didn't get to where I wanted in the timeframe I wanted, but for my next 1/2 I'm not going to wait until race month to get to 13. You never know what may happen, so I'd suggest backing your training up to get you to your max miles in the month before the race, just to be safe. Then taper & go back up, taper, etc. till just before the race. This way your body will be used to 13 no problem!

Hi Princesses! Can’t believe we are now under a month to RACE DAY! What is even better is that I am only 27 days from going on my Princess ½ Marathon Mommy Vacation!!!!! I am sooooo ready for a vacation. I’m leaving DH and kids at home with work and school and I’m taking my parents. Looking forward to some quality time with them. They missed my big cross country finals running moment when I was in high school. There was always a bit of sadness that accompanied that memory, but honestly it is going to mean so much more to me to have them at the Princess ½. Running was so easy in high school. Now I’m 37, about 35 lbs heavier, and I’m a wife and working mom to 2 great boys. Finishing the Princess ½ is going to be a much bigger accomplishment!

Quick question on the Expo… I saw that there is an admission cost to enter the Wide World of Sports Complex - $13.50/adult. For those who have participated before, are we really going to have to pay that to go to the Expo? I just want to make sure I bring enough money because I don’t want to make my parents pay to go with me to the Expo.

Have a 12.5 scheduled for tomorrow. Eek! Based on my route, I will actually go 12.9. This will be my longest run so far. I hope my body will hold up. I did 11.2 two weeks ago and felt pretty good in terms of cardio, but my legs were JELLY! My long runs before the race are:
Feb 6th - 4
Feb 13th - 12.9
Feb 20th - 4

My route is very hilly, so I’m hoping that endurance-wise I will be more than ready for 13.1. It is just another .2 miles, so that shouldn’t be a problem – right??

With a hilly training course you will absolutely rock the relatively flat princess course! Way to go!

It will be fine. Better to take the day off than risk getting sicker or injured (because of weakened system and pushing too hard while sick) and missing the Princess. Right?

True I hadn't thought about the risk of injury. I just kept thinking I could run if a little sick and then spend the next few weeks getting well. However, an injury could potentially last longer.

I ditto verticalchaos
But don't you hate it when your DH is right (JK) :)

Um I already had to admit I was sick, I just don't think I can admit that he is right. Not all in the same day!

Thanks you guys!

I've been sick all week and figured it best to rest, and not push anything right now. I do NOT want to get this far (12 miles last week- woot!) to get sidelined by injury either.

On other news- I got my bondi band today. I think it's cute- hopefully it will be cold enough to need it. ;)

BTW- that's baby bump, not Baskin Robbin's bump. (my butt belongs to BR...lol)

Super cute....are you wearing that top on race day b/c it looks awesome with the bondi band.

I will get my bondi bands at the expo, can't wait :)

Thanks- I think I will end up in this shirt. I have some rhinestones and crown iron thingy to try to bling it out a bit. If the temps are cold, I can wear something under it longsleeve. If it's hot, then this should work out.

I added the small bling to it- they come pretty plain, actually. My 5 year old DD was disappointed- she told me I HAD to add some sprakle. lol So I did. ;)

That is perfect. At first I thought you had on a purple tiara to match your shirt then I saw the headband. It looks great with your hair! Your baby bump is adorable too!

I have that bondiband but it's hot pink with a silver tiara. I wore it on hot days in the summer and it didn't bother me so maybe you could wear it even if it's hot.

Wow that looks amazing. Great job with the bling. Also, I have to tell you I am in aww of you doing this while prego.:worship: I can not even imagine.

So, just a little update. I did not push my last weekend LR and have decided that I will stick to the schedule. Thank you to all that commented on my "first half" question. My only goal is to finish. Part of the issue is that I did my last LR on a new treadmill (DD wan't to go to the gym instead of staying home). I realized that I love my treadmill. I love my picture of the course above the treadmill and the gym is a great place for cross training but will only be running at home from now on.

Just watched some video of people crossing finish lines and at the castle on other thread. I was amazed how crouded it is. Now, it was not the princess it was the Jan half and I know that that race is much larger. So my next question, will I feel like I am at MK on spring break? Are the crowds really person to person on the course? I will be somewhere near the back :rolleyes1 so I assume it will be thinner back there.

This is my experience and it could be different for others depending what corral you are in and how fast you run/walk.

I have started in the second corral both times and I don't think it matters what corral you start in, it will be shoulder to shoulder for a bit until the pack loosens up. There are a couple of areas where the course gets narrow and you will notice racers a little closer together. I have NEVER experienced "crowds" like at a busy park time..except in the corrral, it is like a bunch of cattle. Lines for photo ops were a little longer last year, but we had twice as many racers as the before. I have never seen pushing like one can get at a park on a busy day and there are no strollers (please don't flame me) so that take another element out when you are thinking busy park day.

Compression/running shorts practically eliminate thigh chaffing.

You must be thin. ;)

I also will mention under the band of your bra in the back, and between the upper arm and body, as places for glide.

I started in corral D and it was crowded for most of the way. Very polite for the most part, though, more so than the other two races I did in 2010.

How are you making out back running with the stress fracture? I am doing much better, but I have not trained nearly like I should have out of fear that blessed pain would come back. So far nothing so I am assuming I am good with my new goal being to train hard for the next few weeks and get to 10 LR at the very least.

Thought of you :)

I have been thinking of both of you since I have had my foot problem. I had wanted to go up to 12 in my training, but going to keep it at 10 or 11 MAX. Anyhoo, good luck with your training and hoping you both are doing much better.

Thanks for this. It hadn't even occured to me to used body glide under the band of my bra. I've been getting chafing there on my longer runs and tired like 3 different bras thinking it would help. I'm such a momo sometimes.:sad2:

Love my bondi bands. I have that one in black and silver to wear for the Princess. I wear mine even when its not cold because I sweat so much and need them to keep the sweat out of my eyes. I wore one last week (Black "this IS my race pace") on my long run, at 10AM. When I got back I had a line from where I got a little sunburnt. People asked me for the next few days do you have a line across your forehead!

Take care of yourself and that baby and rest, rest, rest.

Wendy

With the threat of yet another winter storm hitting right in the middle of the week (this time with a foot of snow and freezing rain added on), I decided I better not wait until next weekend for my 11 miles. I wanted to make full use of the balmy weather (it was 30 degrees) and snow/ice melting off the roads. So, the original 6 miles very unexpectedly turned to 11 this morning. Since it was an unplanned change, I wasn't as prepared as I should have been. No GU or gatorade, I had left them accidentally in the car. I needed them right around 9.5 miles (that is when my pace started taking a nose dive- although the icy street corners didn't help that either). Let's hope the weather forecast is wrong though. I'm DONE with winter weather!!!

Good luck today to everyone getting in your miles!!! Post how your runs are.

Adorale! I went to look for one and I am not finding that one (w/tiara) on their website. Can you help point me in the right direction? Thanks!

Click on headbands on the right side menu, then click on "sayings (heavy sweat wicking.) On the page you come to there is a link under the top three choices for one with a pink tiara. If you want a different color ink, click on the "everything else bands" option and look on page 4.
