Laurie, I just read your race report and I am so impressed with you, and I sit here crying and thinking how proud your mom must be of you. I lost my mom last year, and this past winter when I was really struggling with the loss, I started the couch to 5k, and the running has helped me so much to deal with my feelings in a healthy way and not eating my way through them. Thank you for sharing your story with us, and a huge congratulation on finishing your first half-marathon!!!:cheer2:

Keep up the good work everyone!! The princess is just 5 months away!!!!

Thank you so much! I am truly looking forward to my second HM which happens to be Princess. I honestly think that the second will be relatively easier since I know what to expect. I also think HM's is like chili...no two batches will be the same.

i like the chili comment! lol!

gah!! this rain is really putting a damper on the whole training thing!!

looks like i'm going to run in another 5k on saturday. it's here in the bronx and it's a fundraiser for a guy in my uncle's fire house who died in 9/11. it's at orchard beach at 11am and it's supposed to be a pretty nice weekend so that should be a fun race.

i was supposed to do a 7 mile run on saturday so i guess i'll just try to do that on sunday. dh is leaving for business on monday (my birthday, boo) and won't be back til the following monday which means next weekend i probably won't get a long run in unless i can find someone to watch the baby.

can't wait to hear about amy's run with jeff g!!

In DC thiis week... I hear you about the rain but I kind of like rain running :thumbsup2 That is unless you take a bath. I was running along the Rock Creek path this morning and just started under a bridge when I see cars coming. I also see the right hand lane hal full of water. I tried to sprint but before I could get out of the way SPLASH!. Anyway, you cannot control the race day weather so you really need to 'experience' all types of weather.

oh i'm all about rain running but obviously during the week when it's just me and the baby i can't take him out in the pouring rain. yes, there are rain covers but it has been WAY too humid and the rain WAY too hard to really be able to use it.

if it rains on the weekends for my long runs i'll definitely be running on my own!

That is great news! :) If I were you, I would stick to one of the walking plans - I am partial to Hal Higdon. The Half is very much walkable with the right amount of training and it would be a bit less pressure for your knee to deal with and more certainty that you won't get to the severe level of pain. There are tons of walkers so you wouldn't be alone. In fact, there were speedwalkers that were passing me while I was running! Perhaps with enough Pixie Dust at the Disney Princess, your Plica will stop being a pain and you will go back to your doctor afterwards and continue to get more great news! :goodvibes Sending good vibes your way for no Plica pain!

Yay. I am glad you can keep training. You have time....just pick and program and do what it says. Happy Training!

Thanks ya'll! I have both Marathons for Mortals and Galloway- but I was actually following Galloway up to about week 4 (Just to Finish the Marathon) before the knee issue and probably will stick with it. I know you are right in that I should do a good bit of walking- I would rather finish the race than injure myself in training before it gets here! Since this is my first race it is not so important for me to finish in a certain time. This is just one of those things most people in my life have said I would never be able to do- first, because of my weight and then second, because of the knee issue. I am, however, one of those people who, once they set their mind to something, can't give it up!

I've been lurking on this thread off and on since I decided I wanted to do the princess half marathon, and I finally got the guts up to register today, so I just wanted to say hello to some of the WISHers I'll be running alongside in february. I'm run/walking, and have been gradually increasing a long run most weeks, and average about 15 min/mile on the long run. I did 7 miles monday, and that was my goal by oct 1st in order to commit to the princess.

Sounds like you and I are at the same point, I did 7 miles last weekend, and I am about a 15 m/m. I am so looking forward to this race!!!

I AGREE!!! I am doing this race for ME!! Eveyone I tell that I have signed up for this look at me and say I am nuts. When I first told DH last December 09 he laughed at me. Now that I just did 7 miles last weekend, he knows he was wrong.

Coach, My 15K is in about 4 weeks, I made it up to 7 last weekend, and boy did my knee hurt bad. This week I took it easy, for my knee and beacuse I have just been very busy. I did 2 miles on Tuesday, 3.5 on Thursday and my knee hurt thursday as well, but not as bad as last week. It does not hurt to walk, (just after run and when I go up and down stairs)
I guess I am look for reasurance that I can finish 9 miles and the princess.

how was the wine and dine???? can't wait to hear about it as well as your run with jeff galloway! your pics on facebook looked great! how was the heat? how was running at night?

i have a 5k race today at 11. FDNY brothers in battle run. should be fun. it finally stopped raining and is nice and cool out! i haven't done all that much running today so i'm a little nervous about the run but i'm just there to have a good time. i mean, there's beer at the end so i won't get too worked up about it! lol!

Has anyone used a good running app? I've used Runkeeper but found it very inaccurate b/c I run in places that are highly shaded. I read about the Nike app ($1.99) and wondered if others have had experience with it and have any tips.

Leaving now for my 7 (or 8, but leaving it open) mile run for the week...

Keep rocking everyone. You are all very inspiring.

i've been using the mapmyrun app and i really like it! you can have it tell you where you're at at certain intervals. like, i have it tell me every fifteen minutes how far i've run, speed, etc. then it'll log it onto the mapmyrun.com profile and keeps track of all your runs. it has gps as well as the capability to play your ipod while you're running. i like it!!

Good luck on your race!!!

whoops! why did i think it was last night?? anyhow, good luck!

i just got back from the brothers in battle 5k. i rocked it and finished at 28:26! woot! my 9 year old cousin mary ran it too (her dad, my uncle, is in the fdny). she was totally kicking my butt for the first mile! she stopped to walk a few times but kept going. about the 2.5 mile mark i saw her and she cut off about .5 of the race to finish up with me and it was great! she is so fast! so she basically did 2.5 miles in that same time! wow! she's NINE!!!

after the race there was food and lots of beer! we're now hanging at home before the oktoberfest in my 'hood starts. good day :)

still, during that 5k race i felt pretty tired. i kept thinking, how the HECK am i going to run 13.1 miles?? my longest has been 8 miles. i have a long way to go!

I am winding down with my training and went for a 4.25 mile run tonight. I had my best pace average, of 9:57. I know I can't maintain that pace for my half, but it's the fastest time for my shorter runs.

I can't believe my HM is next Saturday. I am getting more nervous. So afraid of failing. I keep telling myself I can do this. Just 2 weeks ago I ran 12 miles. I should be ready for this.

Refresh my memory. Will this be your first?

Yes, this is my first. I had a long weekend off work over the 4th of July and signed up for not just one half marathon, but 2. The Whistlestop in Ashland, WI, and of course, the Disney Princess.:)

Wanted to run one before I turned 50.

Please let me know if you have any questions as the week goes on. This week will be a mental challenge.

Thanks Laurie! My plan is to continue to follow my training program, and continue to eat well. I eat healthy (on weight watchers for life) and hope for a good nights sleep before my race. I get butterflies in my stomach when I think about the race. I really want this and I am excited. I think it's normal nervousness that I am feeling.
I expect as the run gets hard, that I will think of you, your blog, and the look on your face when when finished your half, and will tell myself to "suck it up buttercup".:)

Out of curiosity what is your running schedule for this week cuz I ultimately cut mine back with the advice of a running coach.
