Thanks Laurie! Congrats to your DDIL too!
I've decided that I have to think of it just like I do my extremely bad eyesight.I've got it, there's nothing I can do about it, I'll fix it the best I can, and then I'll keep doing whatever it is I set out to do. It might slow me down, but it sure as heck isn't going to stop me! (Not today anyway
)
Can anyone recommend a good running-themed book to me? I've read The Courage to Start and Marathoning for Mortals and loved both.
Thanks!
You are each doing something that is healthy and whether you know or can see it YOU are influencing someone in your sphere of influence to dust off the shoes and try something.
There are a lot of great books out there. Most that I have are more training oriented. I know of a great bok about Prefontaine that may still be in print. I have a Jeff Galloway book - as much a how to and a good read. I just finished a great triumphing over adversity book from Sarah Reinertsen, In a Single Bound.
I know there are many others.
I can vouch for this. After telling me how proud she is of me for months, my 74 year old, morbidly obese mother bought an exercise bike and has been riding it daily. A high school friend told me she wants to do the Princess Half in 2012 and asked if I would also be doing it that year. My niece is already fit and healthy, but running together has made her more committed to fitness and running, and if this keeps her from being part of the rising obesity statistics in the future, I will do everything I can to help her.
They say that if your friend becomes overweight, you have a 57% chance of also becoming overweight. I believe that the reverse can also be true. Fitness and healthiness are contagious!
I hate to keep harping on this, but "I'm sorry you took it the wrong way" is not an apology. It's saying "You were wrong. I feel bad for you for making a mistake." Saying "Anyone can do it," is not encouraging. It's belittling to everyone who has ever felt proud of herself for struggling to walk a mile. She thinks, If anyone can walk thirteen miles, what's wrong with me that I can't walk one without getting so tired I want to die? Maybe you think that there's a lot wrong with that person, and you may be right about that, with regards to her weight and fitness. However, what's right with that person is that she's trying to make a difference in her life and she deserves to feel proud of what she's accomplished, however small it may be to you. I know many people who couldn't walk 13 miles at any pace. I also know that many of those people are starting small, gradually adding more, and keeping consistent. And I will freely admit to being prouder of my friend's mom for fighting her way through walking two miles after walking one mile every night for a week than I am of myself for running farther than that on my short weekday runs.I had already apologized, so there was no need to attack me.
You said that you've walked 13 miles before. I doubt you did it without previously walking substantial distances as part of your daily routine.
I just signed up for my first 10k scheduled for the first weekend in December...I wonder everyday what has gotten into me!![]()
Is anyone else excited that our race is just six months away?![]()
I know I am BUT I have to successfully run and finish my first HM September 26. I am at least 200% sure I will do just fine. THen, I can start thinking ahead to Princess. Woot!

Laurie, where are you running again? I'm doing Philly 9/19.
The you can walk 13 tomorrow is from someone who has never walked 13. My brother used to tell me that all the time .. Funny he never has.
Just let it slide. Look ladies, coach here. You really need to train. The vast majority of Americans simply cannot go out the door and run/walk/crawl/cycle 13 miles in an event. Some can but most are not going to be able to get through it.
I am proud of each and every one of you and your efforts. You are each doing something that is healthy and whether you know or can see it YOU are influencing someone in your sphere of influence to dust off the shoes and try something. Keep looking around and you may see a really red-faced out of shape person on the trail one day and think, I know her from Good chance that is the result of the hard work you are doing today. I trust that each of you are actively training either to create a great base or have started a build up to the race. Hold you head high and just keep trucking!
OH, I am also very honored to be a part of YOUR kingdom.
