Can anyone recommend a good running-themed book to me? I've read The Courage to Start and Marathoning for Mortals and loved both.
Thanks!

Thanks Laurie! Congrats to your DDIL too!

I've decided that I have to think of it just like I do my extremely bad eyesight. :lmao: I've got it, there's nothing I can do about it, I'll fix it the best I can, and then I'll keep doing whatever it is I set out to do. It might slow me down, but it sure as heck isn't going to stop me! (Not today anyway ;) )

You my friend ARE a great motivator. I have coached a couple MS cyclists and - well I am still emotional about their struggle. I wish only the best to you and your effort. Your message is all too powerful and should motivate all to get out and do something.

There are a lot of great books out there. Most that I have are more training oriented. I know of a great bok about Prefontaine that may still be in print. I have a Jeff Galloway book - as much a how to and a good read. I just finished a great triumphing over adversity book from Sarah Reinertsen, In a Single Bound.

I know there are many others.

You are each doing something that is healthy and whether you know or can see it YOU are influencing someone in your sphere of influence to dust off the shoes and try something.

I can vouch for this. After telling me how proud she is of me for months, my 74 year old, morbidly obese mother bought an exercise bike and has been riding it daily. A high school friend told me she wants to do the Princess Half in 2012 and asked if I would also be doing it that year. My niece is already fit and healthy, but running together has made her more committed to fitness and running, and if this keeps her from being part of the rising obesity statistics in the future, I will do everything I can to help her.

They say that if your friend becomes overweight, you have a 57% chance of also becoming overweight. I believe that the reverse can also be true. Fitness and healthiness are contagious!

I just signed up for my first 10k scheduled for the first weekend in December...I wonder everyday what has gotten into me! :lmao:

Ok, this made me tear up. HOORAY for your mother. It's as though you've given her life

I had already apologized, so there was no need to attack me.
I hate to keep harping on this, but "I'm sorry you took it the wrong way" is not an apology. It's saying "You were wrong. I feel bad for you for making a mistake." Saying "Anyone can do it," is not encouraging. It's belittling to everyone who has ever felt proud of herself for struggling to walk a mile. She thinks, If anyone can walk thirteen miles, what's wrong with me that I can't walk one without getting so tired I want to die? Maybe you think that there's a lot wrong with that person, and you may be right about that, with regards to her weight and fitness. However, what's right with that person is that she's trying to make a difference in her life and she deserves to feel proud of what she's accomplished, however small it may be to you. I know many people who couldn't walk 13 miles at any pace. I also know that many of those people are starting small, gradually adding more, and keeping consistent. And I will freely admit to being prouder of my friend's mom for fighting her way through walking two miles after walking one mile every night for a week than I am of myself for running farther than that on my short weekday runs.

You said that you've walked 13 miles before. I doubt you did it without previously walking substantial distances as part of your daily routine. A significant portion of the US is so pedestrian-unfriendly that it's almost laughable. Forget "walk a mile in my shoes," try walking 13 miles in the shoes of a resident of one of the square states in the middle.

And I'm sorry if you feel like I'm "attacking" you. Honestly. I was trying to explain how your words make me and other posters feel.

I've never had walking substantial distances as a part of my daily routine. Please don't assume things that just aren't true.

I'm not sure what being an East Coaster as opposed to living in a square state has to do with it. I get on the subway every day the same way you all get in your cars.

It took me 51 years to realize that I am an *gasp* ATHLETE! Who would thunk???!!!

Is anyone else excited that our race is just six months away? princess:

I know I am BUT I have to successfully run and finish my first HM September 26. I am at least 200% sure I will do just fine. THen, I can start thinking ahead to Princess. Woot!

Is anyone else excited that our race is just six months away? princess:

I have to focus and just get past my first 5K on 10/2 before I can even begin to look ahead! But I must admit, I have to really work at not thinking about the Princess!

The “you can walk 13 tomorrow” is from someone who has never walked 13. My brother used to tell me that all the time….. Funny he never has.

Just let it slide. Look ladies, coach here. You really need to train. The vast majority of Americans simply cannot go out the door and run/walk/crawl/cycle 13 miles in an event. Some can but most are not going to be able to get through it.

I am proud of each and every one of you and your efforts. You are each doing something that is healthy and whether you know or can see it YOU are influencing someone in your sphere of influence to dust off the shoes and try something. Keep looking around and you may see a really red-faced out of shape person on the trail one day and think, “I know her from…” Good chance that is the result of the hard work you are doing today. I trust that each of you are actively training either to create a great base or have started a build up to the race. Hold you head high and just keep trucking!

OH, I am also very honored to be a part of YOUR kingdom.

What a great post.

I am SO excited to see the clock ticking away as we get closer to the Princess! I know it's still 6 months, but it was 6 months ago that I decided to get up off of my tail and get prepared for the Princess! So, we're halfway there!

I'm nervous though because I decided to do a HM in October as a 'trial' for the Princess and now I know that one is creeping up on me. (Something like 58 days??) That's a small number! :lmao:

I'm just ready for fall and slightly cooler weather (and hopefully very few hurricanes so I can enjoy being outdoors). I'm so excited about the Princess that I haven't even really thought much at all about our December WDW trip. And that's saying a LOT! :)

I have to throw my 2 cents in here - maybe I have no right on account of not posting much but I am going to anyway.

This board is such a great place to come to to read, post, lurk - whatever floats your boat. For one person to say what is right or wrong for someone else I feel is out of line whether it is for the sake of "encouragement" or otherwise. We are all working hard and making progess with our training and positivity, encouragement and support is what all we come here for. I may be going out on a limb here in saying that overall we really don't know each other personally so when something is typed it may be taken out of context being that we don't know the nature in which it would be said in person. I also feel though that the "encouragement" that some are offering is (IN MY OPINION) like a backhanded compliment. I will agree that some of this stuff has made me second guess myself, made me think what is wrong with me that I can't run XXX (insert distance here) without feeling like a failure but at the end of the day the confidence that I have in myself is way more then what one person can ever take away from me with words or anything else.

I guess what I am saying here is can't we all just get along - think twice before you post something as the person who you are addressing may not understand where you are coming from as you don't understand where they are coming from.

Thanks for listening, reading - and I know that not everyone will agree but that is ok.

I booked our hotel for the Princess weekend yesterday! We'll be staying at AKV - Jambo in a studio from Friday until Monday. I'm still in the air about which race I want to do. Part of me wants to just run the 5K since neither DH or I have ever done anything like this and I love the idea of running through World Showcase. This would also give us the rest of Saturday to relax and maybe go to a nice dinner that evening then enjoy a park on Sunday. On the other hand, I really want that medal for completing the 1/2 instead of the medallion for the 5K and I think we've got enough time that both dh and I can get the training in for the increased distance.
