Thanks. As I said to someone, it was nine miles of fun, two miles of work, and two of complete suck. Lots of lessons learned, but the biggest for me was that I needed more long run training. 12 mile LR training didn't prepare me for 13.1 at all.

Great time! Your first half generally teaches you those lessons. I felt the same way you did... I should have gone further than 12 in training as well. 14 showed me totally different things than 12.

FWIW, my training group takes you to 14 before a half, and up to 26 for a full.

OT, but I also found out due to Galloway's affiliation with Disney, as a Galloway group we get discounts for Disney races. :)

Wow, that's interesting. I keep being told to trust my training program, which only takes me to mile 10. Mentally, I need to run 12 or 13 in training before I know I can do it.

Were the 2 of complete suck, the last 2? Just curious.

Yup. Just before the 11 mile marker was the first time I walked, and the race fell apart there. I can't do a lot more about it before Wine & Dine, but I need to find a plan that gives me at least one run if not more above 13.

It might be a personal thing. People probably do well with 10. I needed more.

That is very interesting and I will find out next Sunday is if this is the case for me also. I ran a 12 mile LR and feel totally confidant that I can finish the total 13.1 miles with relative ease...with emphasis on relative. I run/walk (2/:30) and that may make the difference with me. Stay tuned...

we leave for disney on sunday! MUST try to get some runs in! i will do a long run tomorrow at home. i won't do any long runs at disney because that's just crazy (for me, at least) but i will try to get some short runs in early in the am a few times while there.

Have a wonderful time!!

Great Job that is a great time.

I did 6 miles this morning in 1 hour 27. Slow I know, but that is a good time for me, and I did not feel spent when I was done.
So I am happy

Good job! 6 miles is awesome. I did 5 miles this weekend at pretty much the same pace.

For anyone who is interested, RoadID sponsored the 5K I did last week. They gave out a $2 off code: ARR5783

I love mine and I'm seriously considering getting a second one!

Thanks for the code.

Philly is in the books. 2:20:xx.[/QUOTE

Congrats! That is awesome. You must feel so good to have done it.
It's interesting what you said about needing to go the distance. I was toying around with changing from the Galloway program to one of the other ones that only goes to 10 miles. But after reading what you all wrote, I think I will stick to the Galloway one.

Finished the Air Force Half Marathon today with my best time ever! 3:20 with walking the race. Went to the medical tent at the end feeling kind of woozy. blood pressure was 50/30!! Got to get this straightened out before my next Half in October. Was walking by myself wearing my Princess Half Marathon shirt when I was joined by another Princess wearing her princess Half Marathon shirt who was also walking alone. Our paces were similar so we finished the race togehter. Talking about Disney made some (o.k. maybe 2!! miles fly by). She is going to be a Perfect Princess in February, too. That is, unless she gets deployed. She is in the air force. It really struck me then, what our service men and women have to sacrifice for our country. Say thank you to the next one you see.

Made our reservation for Riverside for Princess week-end. Now, I just have to get registered!

Way to go on your race! Great job for finishing.

Has anyone answered you question about Team in Training yet? I am participating in my fourth season with them right now. In order to get a website to fundraise you need to contact your local chapter. Not every chapter goes to the Princess. Mine does the races in January.

I think that all of the chapters in Florida will do that race though.

There is an online training option for those races not supported by your local chapter. You just need to email the link on the site to ask about it.

Because I read this earlier today I did some research for the AF HM and decided I truly wanted to travel to Wright-Patt next year and do this one. I am a very proud AF vet mom and this HM literally "spoke" to me.

Congratulations on your Air Force HM finish!!! See you next year!

Hydration! Any idea how well you hydrated during the race. Not saying drink more without understanding sweat rates. A huge contributor to lo bp post run is vessels remaining dialated but not having blood volume to fill them.

I would submit that you may have run the first 11 miles 30 - 60 seconds a mile too fast. Don't know for sure but what I remember of your training and race paces it seems to point to a little too fast.

Then there is the mental side of the run. Run/walking is a little less mental than continuous running. When running continuously, you are battling the internal demons that say just take a quick break. However, once you succumb to those demons, especially late in the race you are in sux city. Once you stop it is just next to impossible to stay on run.

Don’t get me wrong, I train folks anywhere from 10 miles to 16 miles for a half. Most first timers or those without a strong goal are kept in the 10-12 mile long run range. The likelihood of injury increases, especially in the first time runner if one pushes out too far. If you are looking for a PR or an age group award we are running 15 miles or so for the half. But we are also running harder mid-week for the latter group, also.

Other than having last mile issues I hope you had a great time. a 2:20 half is not a bad time for a first event. I am betting that if you pull back that 30-60 seconds at W&D your time will be faster.

Okay so decided to try to run today, after taking all last week off due to a terrible cold and feeling miserable. I ran only 1.4 miles, which should have been 4 miles. Well ran at my 11:25 pace, but had to stop.

I hate running in afternoon, I always feel cramped and icky running during this time of day. I thinkj I literally can only run in the morning with an empty tummy. I had to stop becasue my throat is so dry, as I have been feeling all dehydrated from this cold that I can't kick. No matter how my water/liquid I intake to moisten my throat it has been getting dried up rather quickly.

Here is hope that Thursday morning will be a better run and no more icky cold.

I ran my 12 miles yesterday. This is my longest distance ever. It was a good run, but I wasn't happy with my time of 2:20. I really don't think that 5K on Saturday should have affected my long run, but I don't know.

My first 2 miles were 10 minute miles, I am guessing too fast for me. It was interesting to see that every mile, I got a little bit slower. I did feel fatigued about 1/2 way into it.

I am guessing my time would have been better had I run/walk some of it, or more importantly, had I started out a little bit slower. I have this thing though, that I think I have to run the whole thing. My first hm is 2 weeks from this Saturday, and I want to run the whole thing. That's my goal.

OK, I didn't post last night after my run because I got sick about an hour afterwards. I was very nauseated, had diarrhea, and shivered a lot. I am trying to believe it wasn't from my run, but I am just not sure. I felt I was well hydrated. I know I sweat alot, but as it got cooler out, I didn't feel very sweaty. However, I had white salty powder all over my face, forehead, and shoulders. I did drink about 12 ounces of powerade over the 12 miles, and I eat a peanut butter sandwich about 20 minutes after my run. I think that's what made me sick. I am hoping it was a coincidence.

I feel great today.

Any thoughts?

Congrats on your Half Marathon.:cheer2: I know a gal that ran it. It sounds like a fun race to run. My DH was in the AF for one term, but my FIL retired AF. Might have to consider this one.

In my honest opinion, the 5k did indeed effect your long run because your muscles were not rested. That is what I learned from Coach Nancy on SparkPeople. Your body may have just been rebelling on you...you know...making your life difficult LOL.

No matter what, didn't that 12 miles feel like a great accomplishment? You rawk!

OH! OH! Do it! The AF half is on my list for 2011 and hubby is so excited with escorting me out to Dayton! We are AF vet parents.

Thanks, yes it did. Me, I ran 12 miles.:woohoo: It is truly amazing. I started running with the C25K program 3 years ago. Who would have thought:
1) that I'd still be running
2) that I'd run a half Marathon
3) that at age 50, I'd be running a HM in Disney

I would have laughed at all these comments.

I agree, the 5K probably impacted my long run.

I will seriously consider it. It wouldn't be that far for me.

Oh! I agree with all of the above. Who woulda thunk, huh?

Coach, I am afraid that I am going into my first half pretty unprepared. I started with one training program but my training buddies dropped out and since I've been running on my own, I haven't really adhered as strictly to the program as I might have, with the exception of making sure I hit the recommended distances for the long runs. I did 11 on Sunday and the last mile was pure torture. Part of this was my stupidity: as one of my cross training days (Fri) I did a wicked boot camp class and was still pretty sore when I started my run on Sunday morning. Although the training program recommends 12 for this weekend, I would like to try and push it to 13.5. I just want to know - mentally - that I can actually do the 13.1 before I start the whole taper thing (which frankly, scares me to death because I'm afraid I'll lose endurance...) I've been averaging between 10 and 10:30 runs so am hoping for around a 2:30 half....

My first hm is 2 weeks from this Saturday, and I want to run the whole thing. That's my goal.

Any thoughts?

Trudes, my first hm is 2 weeks from Sunday (Albany NY) and I have the same goal - I want to be able to run the whole thing. Right now my mental "you better walk or you'll never finish" hits me at about 8.5 miles. (it used to start at 5, then 6, etc etc). I am hopeful that I can push it to at least the 13 mile mark and then I'll be able to see the end in sight and talk myself through it... I started with higher hopes of doing this in 2:10 or so but I've re-evaluated those. And I have no time in mind for the Princess - I want to be able to enjoy the run, relax and take timw out for pictures with the characters along the way and just have a good time. I think I may sign up for this particular half in Albany again next year and then I can concentrate on a PR. Right now my accomplishment will be in actually finishing the darn thing!!
