OK, so here's another gymnastics question:


Shawn Johnson will be back ast West Des Moines Valley High School next week, where she is a junior.

Can she be on the high school gymnastics team???

I bet she could. There were two Texas high school girls who each won medals in Swimming in Athens. They both competed in high school swimming the next school year. They coordinated with each other when entering the state qualifier so they wouldn't compete against each other (they made sure they didn't swim the same events.) Each won their state events by a lot (can you imagine being the OTHER kids in the pool with them and knowing you were swimming against an Olympic Gold medalist?! ).

I don't know about Iowa school gymnastics, but in Texas it wouldn't be challenging enough. In Texas, the preliminaries are Level 6 (the big skill is one back walk over on the balance beam and not even any giants on bars) and the ones who qualify for finals do Level 8. Shawn was probably a Level 8 when she was 10 or 11, so school gymnastics would be a big step back for her. Lots of girls who are intense gymnasts in middle school "retire" fro USAG and clean up in high school gymnastics. (At least in Texas.)

Some of the former Olympians compete in college; some don't.

HA! I only wish, I think our grizzlies would take out their Russian bears no problem.

Speaking of animal events, do you think anyone has ever tried to add rodeo? Are are we the only ones who do it?

We watched quite a few international sand soccer games on TV when we were in Germany. I wonder if there's a push to make that an exhibition sport.

Oh heck, here he is pre-paint - maybe I can get his keeper to use red, white and blue paint.

We actually got Bruno from Knoxville Zoo earlier this year, so we have a southern grizzly bear??
