Hey everyone!

This is the official 2008 Beijing Olympics thread. Talk about athletes, sports, and anything else. But please, if a fellow DISer is supporting a different country than you, please do not "trash-talk" their country. Feel free to put "Go Team USA" or things like that.

Here's the official site of the 2008 Olympics- http://en.beijing2008.cn/

Have fun!

Ooooh we're so close, I can't wait for the Olympics!!!

There's 3 gymnasts from around here who are going to be on the team...Paul and Morgan Hamm and Chellsie Memmel...I hope they do well! Oh yes, and of course I'll be cheering for Michael Phelps. :thumbsup2

My nephew works for NBC and is leaving Saturday for Bejiing. He's going to be working on the webcast portions. For anyone who is interested here's something my sister sent me about it.

He has been working on the website, www.nbcolympics.com and the mobile version of the site, mobile.nbcolympics.com. There are many layers to the sites and there is plenty to see and read. Please click away. For the first time, the site will have streaming video of many of the Olympic competitions that aren't often (or ever) seen on TV. As you watch the video on the website, you will see live blogging by experts explaining what is happening in the video. Matt helped find these experts - many former Olympians, coaches and officials - so it will be exciting to see what they have to say and how it all works out.

Another project he has helped with is sending alerts to cell phones and BlackBerries. You can sign up at the website to stay in touch with what is happening in general at the Olympics, or about specific sports or athletes. Texts, photos and videos can be sent to your mobile devices depending on what you sign up for (a link to sign up is on the main page of the website). NBC hopes to keep folks in the loop while working or playing and away from the computer or TV. This works especially well if you have unlimited text availability as part of your mobile packages.

So, for all you olympic junkies here's a way to keep up live.

I LOVE the Olympics. Is it a female thing? DH could care less (though when he starts watching he gets into it--remember the Canadian figure skaters, he knew they'd been ripped off).

Anyway, when I talked about it at work, only the females seemed interested.

I can't get enough.

But I got sucked into the World Cup a couple summers ago and have no interest in soccer whatsoever. Travel Channel is doing China Week in preparation.

I saw on the news today that the smog is really bad . . . Bejing may prove to be a very poor location.

I bleed red, white and blue every 4 years!

Can't wait...the DVR is ready and so am I!!

I'm just eager to see what the reporters have to say about the smog. :)

All I ever watch is swimming/diving and I don't much care who wins.

So, go everyone!!! :)

LOL, I just posted about that.

Ever since I heard where they were doing it, I've been waiting for this. And have posted so a bunch of times. Those folks may have heard it was bad, but I really don't think they have any idea what they were in for. :rotfl:

I'll be watching as much as I can TIVO! Also, my most loved sport will only be on TV rarely, I'd imagine, so I'm SOSOSO stoked for the online coverage they're promising. Phorsenuf, please thank your nephew for me :cheer2:

I cant wait for it all too start

I was in Beijing about 10 years ago. The people there are always hocking a lung--even in their business suits. It was really gross. But then, after we were there a couple days, we started to get the same cough. And once we left, so did the cough. And I can only imagine how hot it is.

Though you figure, some events won't take place in Beijing proper. I figure "out in the country" will be a little better. But it's nasty.

I think Chicago would be a much better venue ;) . I always swore if we got them, I'd be out of town and rent out my house. But now that Chicago's in the running (doubtful we'll get it), I already told DH to start saving because we're going to the opening ceremonies and anything and everything else I can get a ticket for.

It would be pretty awesome if Chicago got the Olympics!

I also just saw on Yahoo that Paul Hamm is withdrawing from the Olympics. That's a bummer. :sad2:

I'm with all of you, I can't wait for the Olympics. I'm not so happy it's in China for political reasons, but it will be a beautiful opening ceremony I'm sure with lots of traditional Chinese music/culture. I'm not familiar with but one or two American athletes, but I love the international competition. I love the backstories they do about the athletes. So touching. Even the Olympic music theme gets to me in a heartfelt way. I'll definitely be watching.

I'll be watching too and I can't wait. I mostly watch swimming, track and field, gymnastics and occasionally see how many points our basketball team beat the other team by.

Paul Hamm (is that the right one?) is out of the Olympics. He tried to come back after breaking his hand, but said hurt his rotator cuff in the process. Oh well. The women are supposed to be good though. Although, one of them broke her leg recently as well.

Great news for Raj Bahvsar. Now he slides in from alternate to actual team member! I like him alot.

Is that official? I heard they were not sure who was going to take Paul's place. That would be horrible though if it wasn't Raj!
