Office Max Return Policy, when using a coupon

I wanted to return something to Office Max today. They wouldn't give me the full price of the item back because I used a $10 off coupon. The coupon was $10 off a minimum $50 purchase.

My subtotal before tax was $81.52. After the coupon it was $71.52. The blue ink (I meant to get black) was $14.99 before tax. So $71.52 - 14.99 is $56.53. If I return the ink at $14.99 I would still be spending the minimum of $50.00. As I explained this to the supervisor, she kept saying, "but you only paid $13.50 for the ink".

Now I understand they took the $10 off a little bit from every line item, but, if you take off the ink, I still spent more than the minimum $50 that would validate the coupon in the first place. I believe I am entitled to the full price refund plus tax.

Am I wrong? If so, please explain to me, in elementary form, how so.

My husband said, why didn't you just exchange it for black. I don't know! That's what I should have done, but at the moment, all I could see was my side, lol.

A) You should have done a simple exchange, then you would be done.
B) I would say you'd have to talk to a manager. You need to show them what you're trying to say, but I think you used the wrong numbers...

Your cost (pre-coupon) was $81.52. If you hadn't purchased the ink, the cost (pre-coupon) would have been $66.53. That's still more than the $50 minimum, so take $10 off that, and your new total should have been $56.53.

I think you'd have to break it down to the manager like that.

A lot of stores do it the same way as Office Max now. At the time of purchase the $10 off coupon ceases to be $10 off and instead gets translated to a portion off each item purchased. Therefore, when you return an item you get back what you actually paid for that individual item.

That is the way the coupon works regardless of how much you spent, it will only refund you the money actually spent on that item. The coupons are broken down so that a little comes off each item.

The store is not wrong in this case.

Yes, almost every store does it this way now. I know that Michael's lists the "return value" of an item when you use a coupon. So does Toys R Us.
