Offical American Idol Discussion Thread

I've got info on the Flashdance girl...

Her name is Kristen, and she's an intern on a morning radio show here in Tampa.

The whole thing was a farce. The auditions were way back in September, and they were saying on the radio this morning that the last 3 months have been agonizing wondering if she would actually be on the show!

They were completely blown away by how much time they spent on her.

Her girlfriend that met her outside the door is also an intern on the show. The Show Host had given them pointers about things to do... (such as shoving the camera away if they happened to put it in her face) They were laughing this morning about how she said "I love you, Paula" as she left the room.. :)

And the Kimberly C. wannabe lives in our area, also. They called her this morning on the show. Of course, she couldn't give anything away, but she did agree to come on the show in the future, which would lead me to believe that she doesn't have any "live shows" in her future... :)

Mine too. She was so funny. I loved the way she hugged her scooter "goodbye" lol

I'm cracking up at people calling that blonde a Kim C. wannabe...

Isn't Kim already a Britney wannabe?? :rotfl:

Had to crack up at the Scooter Girl giving away her scooter scene, too...I wonder how far that guy got on a scooter with a pink basket before someone kicked his butt?? :teeth:

No one really stood out for me last night. Everyone who they sent on just seemed like the same kind of people they always get...which I guess is what they want, but I'd rather see some different people. I guess my favorite was the "Daddy's Girl."

During the A Whole New World montage, I was a little bit confused, because there was one girl who they showed briefly who seemed to be very good...most of the people in that were horrible, but she seemed like someone who the judges would have liked.

I remembered something else that I noticed in Monday's show...I forget who it was, but Randy told someone they were "too broadway" for American Idol. Didn't they criticize Clay for being "too broadway" last year, and hasn't he been more successful than the winner? I would think that they would have noticed that people embraced his "broadway" quality, and that they would be wanting to find someone else who can be that successful!

It just hit me that Smallville and AI are going to on at the same time tonight. There will be a fight for the remote if Smallville isn't a rerun!

I thought military girl was given all that face time because she was really suited for television and they wanted to give her some exposure. I don't think her voice would have made it too very far, since it seemed to lack some strength. My favorite from night one is the Unchained Melody guy.

My favorite from night two hasn't been mentioned here: the tiny girl that belted out "Proud Mary" beat out Daddy's girl for me, although I loved her Porgy and Bess selection.

I keep thinking back to the introduction when they said they were looking for someone completely different from the first two season's finalists. Maybe that's why the too-Broadway-types are not getting through.

I got a kick out of the man who selected a religious hymn to sing and then cussed like a sailor when he didn't go through.

No there wasn't very many interesting auditions during last night's episode. :( But the girl that you're talking about was the Army girl. In my opinion, they made a mistake in not choosing her because she was really talented and confident, but not overly confident. My favorites so far have been the guy who sang "Unchained Melody" and John, the guy who sang a Dean Martin song.

So far, I think the Scooter girl is one of the best, but she needs to calm down, and stop being so goofy.
the Unchained melody guy is one of the best guys so far, and the guy with the really red hair didn't sound bad either.
It will be interesting tonight to see the rest of the auditions, I just wish we got to see more of the good ones.

I'm so embarrassed to be from Houston!

What a bunch of whiny crybabies! At least Atlanta got a montage of badly done "Whole New World" singers. We got people facing assault charges!

My two favorite moments from tonight:

The girl who sang about 10 notes of her song and Simon announced, "Welcome to Hollywood!"

The 16 y.o. yodeler who thought she was making a point by arguing she was about to be 17. The word is affected, dear. As in fake.

One other note, watching the groups of three audition for the producers in Minute Maid park confirmed that the judges pick the best and the worst for auditions with The Three.

I thought Paula was saying "infected" ...LOL..guess that went over my head as well...I thought she said 'infected' meaning she was too influenced by the way other people sang that she was trying to be like them....but anyways, she did seem kind of fake to me....I thought she was trying to act "sweet and innocent" like the way Kelly Clarkson was (although she was real) and when she sang, it seemed like she was trying to sing like Christina A. .....it was all too fake.....and I'm pretty curious to see her when she starts singing on stage...

I have to admit I watched next to nothing of the first two American Idols but I managed to catch a little of tonight's episode and I've got to say I was not impressed. I mean, the two guys they had judging the singers were terribly rude and impolite. I know that makes good TV, but it was heartbreaking to see them just shatter those kids' dreams like that. It seems to me that they could give them some tips about how to improve their vocal skills insteed of just telling them to give up and that they are the worst singer they've ever heard. I'm not surprised that Simon guy got his drink thrown back at him (not that I condone that, I think that was the wrong thing to do, but it doesn't surprise me that someone would do that after the abuse he put those kids through).

Well, the Houston auditions were the WORST! I can't believe they had that many bad ones!

And what was up with the Asian girl? She was so cute and had such a great background -- Harvard, musician, musical family, etc. and then when she opened her mouth to sing, I couldn't even tell what song she was "singing" until I heard her say "I can't stand the rain" (Tina Turner song).

Before that moment, I thought it was some kind of "alien" singing. Even Simon said it sounded like it was from another planet.

What kills me is that these terrible singers really do think they sound fine. They seem to "hear" a whole different sound coming out of their mouths than everyone else does. It's very sad.

I also said to me DH that if you luck out to be among the semi-good ones at one of these auditions with lots of terrible ones, you'll probably get picked just because you were one who could carry a tune and not so much that you were good -- just compared to the others they heard, you would be.

P.S. I said before the show started that someone was bound to say "Houston, we have a problem" -- we all laughed when Simon actually said it!

ahem, OK Here goes:
Wise man say onry fool rush in
I Can't herp Farring in Ruv with you.
What do you think?

The one that got me was the woman with that freaky voice and as she sang, the thunder and lightening kept getting worse and she just kept "starting over" because of her nerves. The looks on the judges' faces were priceless.

OMG that was the worst! My DD even pointed out that he said "wif" instead of "with" -- and he was so shocked when they were laughing at him and telling him he couldn't sing...

OMG, that oriental guy, it reminded me of a Christmas Story when they go to the chinese restaurant at the end and the waiters are singing Deck the Halls and that girl that just kept starting over when they were telling her to stop, I was laughing so hard. Also, the guy who continued to sing after Simon and Randy left the room, he was singing to empty chairs. Last night cracked me up so much. I can't wait for Tuesday night.

While I do realize that we 'hear' our own voices differently than they actually are, wouldn't you think that someone would have told these kids that they can't carry a tune? And as to the 'rudeness' of Simon and Randy, well, all these people know going in what is in store for them. If you can't sing, then be prepared to get slammed!!! I have been on several auditioning committees for community theater and it is downright painful to sit through some auditions. At least we don't laugh at you. But, then again, we only do this for 3 hours at a time over 3 days. I can't imagine what it's like for Simon, Paula and Randy. But, I have to wonder.....some of those 'untalented' people almost look like set-ups. And as far as the water throwing guy last night, it all looked staged to me. I mean....Randy leaving, Simon fiddling with his body mike and then this kid just ambles over, and throws water and Simon didn't look at all shocked??!!! And security was right there. I mean it took them 2 seconds to get there. Don't know, it's just my take. But, I'll be watching the rest of the show.

I missed the last 15 minutes of the show. Did they actually have someone on there that was worth hearing that I missed?

I thought the guy that sang America the Beautiful had a nice voice but he tried way too hard.

Oh, I just remembered the older looking guy. His voice was nice too.

so far...i have to say that my favorite "voice" is the gal who sang about 10 notes of her song and simon told her she was going to hollywood...i think her name was cassie? anyway, she has an awesome voice...

the oriental guy cracked me up!! i wasn't overly impressed with the yodel gal either, but she has potential. assuming she stops trying to sing like christina aguiliera...

i did like the gal from a few nights back...i think it was atlanta...the one where her dad was with her. she had a good voice too.

some of those people were downright freaky last night. the thunder and lightening gal...the guy who kept singing after randy and simon left...yikes...

and as far as the insults from the judges go...this is the 3rd year for this show. the people going into these auditions should know by now what kinds of responses are typical from the judges. if i were going to audition for them, i would be prepared to hear that they think i'm the world's worst singer..yes, it may sting a bit when they say it, but i've seen the show in the past and i KNOW there's a chance for that response. a lot of these people remind me of my SIL. she can't carry a tune in a bucket, yet she thinks that she's the world's greatest singer. and she believes that because none of her family has the heart to tell her otherwise. (i haven't heard her sing yet personally, but i've heard all of the stories.) i could so see her auditioning for this show and then being slammed hard...

i know some of the things that the judges say are pretty brutal, but someone has to be honest with these people!

Lol, when the Asian guy was singing, I looked at my brother and said, "Oh my gosh, he sounds like the Chinese waiters in A Christmas Story!"

So far, there really have not been many good auditions...or maybe they're just focusing more on the bad this year? It seems like in the past 2 seasons, there have been some really bad people, but they've shown about the same number of really good people. Last night, they said that 18 people made it (or something like that), but they only showed 2 or 3 of them. I guess they think people like watching all of the bad auditions more than seeing the people who can actually sing.
