Offical American Idol Discussion Thread

Congrats to Fantasia....I had no preference myself....Ok, maybe an edge to Fantasia. It was good hearing LaToya...she sounded fantastic!!
It just wasn't as exciting as last year. None of them made me jump and scream with excitement like Clay and Ruben did last year!

JPL's facial expressions were still killing me :earseek:

Waiting for AI 4 ;)

One more post to tick everyone off (still wearing the tinfoil hat :) )

1 - I was glad Fantasia won (she deserved it), but couldn't help feeling a bit sad for Diana. The fact is that Fantasia didn't need to win the competition anymore. She'd proved herself several times over, and was absolutely assured of a record deal regardless of the outcome (pretty good for someone some people here seem to think can't sing a lick)

2 - If Diana ever learns to control her voice, she's got unlimited potential (in my opinion). Her version of the AI single was simply amazing in spots, but when she belted some of the notes it was like she just got that little bit out of control...which can lead to train wrecks of the type she suffered Tuesday on her last song. With time and experience, I wouldn't be all that surprised to see her end up with the more lasting career of the two finalists. I honestly think she'll have the wider range of what she can sing than will Fantasia, who will be more pigeonholed into that R&B type sound.

3 - The final 12 - Still can't believe people actually voted for John Stevens, JPL, or Camille....I've seen MUCH better talent at the redneck bar down the street on Kareoke Night (half price beers for any ladies willing to show more than 5 tatoos).

4 - The "AI All-Stars" with Ruben, Kelly, Diana, and Fantasia. Ok, first, let me say that I can't STAND "Man of La Mancha", and least of all that particular song. But, that said, I thoroughly enjoyed their version of it, and Kelly in particular.

5 - If I see one more person say that someone "just has broadway talent" I'm gonna scream  Some of the best singers in the WORLD make their living on Broadway....Give me Bernadette Peters or Lea Salonga (think Mulan) over Kelly "I never met a note that couldn't be 'improved'" Clarkson or even Brittany "Thank God for the wonders of Studio sound manipulation equipment" Spears ANY day of the week, and twice on Sundays :) It doesn't somehow take less talent to sing on Broadway...it takes considerably MORE.

6 - Ruben's song had possibly the dumbest lyrics to any song in recent memory (or, at least, since "Sorry 2004" or whatever his "hit" was). His voice sounded REALLY good...but the song was horrible :) Funny, but I thought he was from Alabama...so I wonder who he's bringing with him to give out that "ghetto lovin" :hyper:

7 - Maybe it's the tinfoil hat, but didn't Simon tell Fantasia after her first song that it was a mess, or something to that effect ? And wasn't that just after praising Diana for her performance of the AI single ? But I must have misheard that, since he never critisized Fantasia na dnever said anything good to Diana :hyper:

And just for the record, I wasn't calling anyone tone-deaf for voting for Diana. The girl has talent, and showed that at times. But she's nowhere NEAR the performer that Fantasia is, as was CLEARLY seen by her third song debacle on Tuesday. If you want to vote solely on potential, then I could see possibly casting a vote for her.

I was calling people tone-deaf that voted for...um...a couple other people in the "Top 12". Let's just say that, if they are any indication of local talent, I'd advise anyone traveling to Hawaii (or Buffalo New York) to make sure to bring headphones:rolleyes:

Nope, it was not the tinfoil hat, Simon most definitely told Fantasia that her first song was "a complete mess", but they neglected to read back that comment when they reviewed the judges critques.

What wvrevy said..... :p

I cried like a baby when she won, I have NEVER wanted someone to win that bad in my life.

After weeks of being basically ALONE in my love for her, I read some amazingly ugly things about a 19yo single Mom that I don't believe were warranted or deserved. I have no idea why she was so despised, I can understand taste differences but the outright nastiness was unbelievable. I know I shouldn't have but I took them personally, and it revved up my campaign to make sure everyone I knew knew what was being said about her.

Now I can rest. :teeth:

I must admit being impressed with Diana's poise tonight. Not a lot of 16 year olds would have been able to handle themselves as well as she did. ::yes::

Amen! She is an extraordinary young lady.

I was so happy to hear Kelly sign again. I think she is the only one of the contestants that I have seen on any of the seasons to ever hit every single song. LOVE HER!

Didn't you love her song "Beautiful Disaster" (I think that's the name of it) It was very "beautiful"
:)

A few random thoughts:

As much as I love Tamayra, I thought she sounded horrible during the national anthem. I think she only hit every third or fourth note. Her voice was so shaky I thought maybe there was an earthquake in California. It really surprised me because normally she is great.

Jasmine's song that she sang on the outdoor stage was so bad that I was actually cringing for her. Why on earth would she choose a song that was so totally wrong for her voice?

I thought this year's group songs were the worst ever! Maybe it's the combination of voices but they sounded worse than our 4th grade choir! Plus the whole thing with the matching costumes reminded me of the Brady Bunch when they all were singing to earn money for the silver platter for their parents' anniversary. I kept waiting for Peter Brady to come out and sing "Time to Change".

Latoya was excellent as always. She should have been the winner, but oh well.

As for the final two, I was never a fan of Fantasia's type of music, but she really grew on me as the season went on. I won't buy her CD because I don't care for that music, but there is no denying she has talent and will appeal to a lot of people.

Diana looked great last night, and handled herself with a lot of class. I think she will do very well in the future. Did anyone else think her new haircut made her look like Hilary Duff?

I thought George sounded great last night too, although Jennifer was not up to her usual standards. The song was too low for her voice.

Fox could not have made it more obvious who the winner was was they had Diana sing I Believe before the end. If she had won, what was she going to do? Sing it again 15 minutes later? That was a bad move on their part.

I wish La Toya would smile more when she sings.

Canadian Idol starts next week. I hope Canada votes better this year.

I suppose she was despised by some because she was the real threat all along to anyones favorite contestant. That makes people want to take her apart piece by piece.

Didn't care for her myself for half of the season, but then she grew on me. I thought Diana would win it simply because she fit the "idol" image more than Fantasia, but then Fantasia started to seem a bit more refined than she was in the beginning, which will only get better with age. She is very talented and I hope she stays true to herself. Diana should go back to being a teenager and finish out her high school years as normal as possible. Whatever normal is for her now after going through this tremendous experience. I hope she will be able to be happy and carry on with the good spirit she always exhibited.

:hyper: :hyper: I was very happy to see Fantasia win. I was crying right along with Paula. I'm such a sap :p

I think Diana has the potential to be a fabulous performer...she just needs time with a vocal coach. I absolutely LOVE Celine...but I have to be honest and say that she was spectular when she was younger...but look at her now...she's an amazing singer.

I'll most likely buy both of their cd's.

YAY again for Fantasia!!!!!!

I enjoy Tamyra's singing too but I thought she butchered the national anthem. I was really surprised. I enjoyed Latoya's singing too and I agree she should have been the winner.

I thought Jennifer Hudson sounded horrible and I was glad she was voted off. George sounded good, he's fun to watch and listen too. Although I'm not a huge John Stevens fan, he seemed like he was letting loose a bit (dancing) and like he was actually enjoying being on stage. Camille was horrible and I forgot about a couple of contestants who were in the final 12 but they seemed to have a lot of fun doing the group number.

Who was the girl who was up with the top 12....hair about Diana's color, straight, a bit longer than shoulder length. No one in my family could remember her. She was up dancing in the finalists number.

Probably Leah Labelle. She was the first one booted off.

Me either my3. I couldn't for the life of me place her. She must have been first voted off.

I actually cried for Fantasia when they announced her name. I'm happy for her.

My son thought Diana looked more like Christina A. in the Ford commercial.

I've never been much of a Rueben fan but did think that he sounded good last night when he sang his solo, even though I really couldn't understand what he was saying.

Thought the quartet of Rueben, Diana, Fantasia and Kelly really sounded good.

Didn't like Kelly's solo at all, not her voice but the song itself.

LaToya sounded good but she needs a little more something, I just can't put my finger on it. Her voice is fine, it's just something else.....

I had forgotten how bad Leah and Camille were.

The group singing was not all that good. I hope that they improve before they start on their tour.

Who or what was Simon laughing at or about during the group singing?

Thought John sounded good and did look like he was having fun. I'd like to hear him again in a couple of years.

I guess it was Leah LaBelle. I had forgotten about her. She used to have red curly hair. Now it seems dirty blond and very straight. I never could really see her face.....maybe they stuck a cousin of Diana's up there or something to confuse us.:D

I totally agree with everything you said!! I said to my dh during the horrible group medley "it's like watching a bad episode of the Brady Bunch", they do not sing well together.

Also totally agree about Fox having Diana sing that song during the show, nice move, couldn't they have been a little more subtle?

Poor Tamyra that was terrible, I think they should have had Kelly sing it (but I always love Kelly). I was so glad to see George again last night, I will buy his CD if he releases one.

I just don't get this season. Last year they did tons of group numbers and they were all pretty good. This year they've done very few and they were horrible. I can't imagine how they are going to sell tickets to their tour this year. (We went last year - it was great - I wouldn't even consider it this year)

Um, excuse me, but that doesn't make you look any better. You're just calling a different group of people tone-deaf.

I'm sorry but I don't consider myself tone-deaf just because my choice in music is different from yours. There are some people that were in the top 12 that I thought were bad and didn't understand how they got there (ex Diana). But I don't call people tone-deaf for voting for her. It just happens to be the type of music they like.

Go ahead and say whatever you like about how talented or untalented you think someone is, but don't go bashing people who like them. That's just really immature.
