Off topic remarks

I've been spending 100% of my DIS time here on the Cruise boards for the last 2+ months. It was so nice to read the boards, get info, and see the friendliness that was evident here.

For the last couple of weeks, it's gotten to be way too similar to what happens now and then on the Community Board. But...I almost expect it there because of its' general-subject nature.

I'm not going to give my opinion on Buckaroo's Dad, off-topic threads, or anything else because frankly I realize that most people really don't care how I feel. lol

And I almost just clicked the big X up in the righthand corner of this window, thinking I'll come back in a month or so and find everything "back to normal". But I wanted to add, before I take a small leave of absence, that this board HAS changed a lot within the short 2 month time period that I've been visiting here.

There's a definite "clique" here, whether people want to admit that or not. I'm not saying that anyone here hasn't been friendly or helpful, quite the opposite; but on the otherhand, many of us don't come here to read personal chit-chat that have nothing or little to do with either Disney cruises, or cruises in general. Do I hear someone thinking "then just don't click on the threads that don't interest you"?? Well most times, I don't find out that a thread doesn't interest me until I've already clicked on and read it. lol

I think Pete and ALL the moderators do a wonderful job here, especially considering they donate their time and energy for free.

Bye for now, everyone. You've all been very helpful in answering my many questions about Disney cruises, and I will be back eventually

SeaSpray, I'm sorry you feel you need to take a break, but understand. I've been there a few times too. :)

I just wanted to say that when a large group of people get together, pretty much daily whether it's IRL, or on a BB, people who have a lot in common will start to gravitate towards each other and converse more with each other than with people they don't have as much in common with.

I wouldn't necessarily call that a clique. JMO, of course. :)

As long as the atmosphere remains "friendly and helpful," and it doesn't take a lot of time to weed through OT posts, I think it's a nice thing. It's always nice to make new friends.

So that is kind of funny that you are such a metros fan even though he is in Dallas now. Thanks for being an MLS supporter- we need more of them!! : )

I figured I could put this here considering this is an "off-topic" thread! HA HA!

Did you mean to say "Grease???"

I'm glad the boards are being monitored. I read them regularly for up-to-date info on the DCL ships. I wish there was more recent information and less informal chit-chat. I don't care if there is a clique or not. I just don't read it if it's not interesting. I have been reading some of the old posts because they tend to be more about the cruise line.

Also, sarcasm does not read well online. It's very hard to "get the joke." I usually refrain from being sarcastic in threads because things can be taken wrong.

Thx to ALL for your recent info and insights. My cruise this summer "rocked" because of my diligence reading this board.

Wow, I'm back to school now and can not get in my morning "fix" and I feel lost!

Personally, I look forward to BD's fun outlook on the boards. When I see something that is worded funny, I always look for his response. My favorite one was about "having a 2 year old on the ship". He responded something like, "I thought everyone had their kids at 0 months" Sorry if I messed up on the wording. I thought it was hysterical.

I often write and re-write posts because I don't know if its worded correctly. I don't want to offend anyone (sorry if I did).

I, like many of you look forward to the boards and enjoy hearing all the little extras. I'm happy to pray for anyone who needs it because I know its nice to know that others really do care.

Some of the funniest post are off topic. Like the beer post where people wanted to unload their trucks of beer. And the one about the cm having orgies on the ship. We all need a little pick me up.

Thanks for letting me share. Lorie

Rae,

to answer your question your freedom of speech gives you the right to start your own bulletin board and say whatever you like there - your choice, therefore your freedom.

It doesn't give you the right to say what you like on someone elses 'property' though. Just as you wouldn't be able to graffitti your opinion on your neighbours brick wall ;)

Maybe I am taking this wrong and please correct me if I am, because right now I am feeling like I being asked to leave.

If that is true, then please refund my Platinum Lifetime Sponsorship funds and I will refrain from further postings.

Please don't go, Rae. I don't know you, but I know this board would not be the same without you.

Ursula

I agree with Dreamer04. Don't go Rae! I always enjoy your post and sometimes it seems like you are "the voice of reason" when things start to flare up. You always seem to know just what to say to someone in need as well.

In fact, I was just thinking that if I had Rae's way with words and BD' sense of humor, I'd be all set.

Hang in there Rae!!

I don't mind off topic threads as a general rule . I don't, however, like when the topic goes off topic during a thread I have been following. I would prefer that anything off topic be under its own thread so I can choose to read it or not. For me it is just a time saver as I don't like going through the process of getting to the next post on a particular thread just to find out it doesn't have anything to do with the topic. I am not referring to Buckaroos Dad's remarks because they have to go right after the post they are poking fun off to make sense. His posts often make me laugh.

Rae, I don't think the moderator meant anything against you personally. I read it as just giving an example as a way to make it make more sense. Also, I don't mind you going off topic at all, either, but would prefer it to be in its own thread because then I would know what the topic is and whther I want to read it or not. No offense intended. Kim

Now, everyone please don't make this a "Rae stay" post. This is serious stuff and I am not trying to get a fan club started -

I just feel that my right to freedom of speech and yours - even those who I do not agree with - can not be dictated to regardless of who owns what. This is still the United States of America and one of the basic freedoms is that of speech.

I think it would be best if I just close this thread and the other one and sign off.

Rae

Rae,

I had hoped to convey to you in our past PM that there is no intentions of asking you to leave. We are only trying to answer your questions. :) :) You asked what I meant by freedom of speech is not a right on a private board. I think Penny was trying to explain it.

Envision this as Pete's house. Yes you have a can say anything you like in someones house, but the person who owns the house can determine if he wishes to allow you to act that way. Pete's wishes for the DIS Board are expressed in the posting guidelines.

Please do not take this as directed at you. It is simply my attempt at explaining your question as to what I meant.

Now everyone, lets get back to planning cruises and let this drop.

Sometimes our moderators make a judgement call that some of us don't agree with, but for the most part they get it right. Kudos to TnRobin (and Michelle).

Hmmm... I see CarolAnnK didn't make your list. Guess she has a goal to work towards. ;)

WOW!! I am fairly new to the boards, but I have enjoyed everything that I have read. I have very helpful information and I like seeing the friendships. My daughter has been emailing a little girl that she met through this board and is so excited about meeting her next week on our cruise. If you don't like what someone has to say you can pass by and not read.

Our Freedom of Speech guarantees us the right to speak our opinion. It does not guarantee us that we will be able to do so inside someone elses house.

I think Penny's point was that it grants anyone the right to construct their own soap box (or their own board) and expound on their beliefs. However, if I own said box, I have the right to ask you to step down off my property.

While I've always hated the analogy of these boards being Pete's house (although, it does accurately illustrate the point), the fact is that these boards are not paid for by tax payer dollars, they are paid for by Pete. Yes, Pete may ask for assistance through sponsorship, which is his right, but that doesn't make these boards public domain.

The kudos were specifically for TnRobin because she was the moderator involved with this incident. I included Michelle parenthetically because I have seen her step in when other situations have called for it. CarolAnnK's contributions to this board tend to be more subtle. No offense was intended by the omission.

That's very true. My demeanor online tends to be restrained compared to my normal demeanor because I have a very dry wit. Dry wit can often be misconstrued online.

Once, very early in my DIS life, I offended someone because they asked a "which option would you choose" question. I responded with "that's a no-brainer. I'd choose...". Now in my circles, "no-brainer" means "easy choice... you don't even need to use your brain." This person took it to mean I was saying she had no brains. Not my intention.
