Trip participants – Colin (43) Me (38) and Zach (8)

Day 1 28th May 2003

Busy day getting last minute stuff packed, Zach got dropped off by his Grandparents at 10.00 so we whizzed into town to get last minute entertainment materials, pens, books, comics etc.

Colin came by at 14.45 to pick us up. Got to Heathrow way too early, as traffic was non-existent for a change. We had a coffee at Costa’s while waiting for the flight to open and Col took Zach to WH Smiths for another comic. Zach totally destroyed a shelving unit by accidentally walking into it, and then hid from the scary security guard.

Checked in with no probs and then had to make a beeline for McDonalds and Prêt, did a little shopping, more coffee then off to the gate. Plane was a little late taking off but Zach had his Phenigans so dozed off pretty quickly. The 12 hours were a major drag!! I slept a little on and off, wandered around to ward off DVT, had a couple of washes and re-did my make-up several times, then eventually it was breakfast time. Got into Changi at about 5 pm their time. Changi Airport has to be the most beautiful airport I have ever seen. Went to find the usual grotty smoking area to find it was outside in the Cactus garden, with a bar, pumping music and lots of steam jets – totally cool, yet strangely warm. We found the relaxing area, where you can shower etc for $4 – we didn’t have to pay as we just had a drink and played pool.
Sorted out our transfers then boarded the flight to Cairns at 8.00pm.. Another boring flight, but only 6hrs this time. Arrived at Cairns at about 04.30 and got our taxi at 05.00, flight was nearly an hour and ½ early.

Arrived at Treetops at 6.00 and they let us have the room after breakfast. We went for a walk on the beach to kill the time in between. Really long beach – probably why it’s called 4 Mile beach!!! Breakfast was brilliant - everything you could imagine, but pricey - $24.00 each + $12 for Zach – won’t do that again! Hotel is amazing – almost no walls so the air flows right through, palm trees and birds everywhere. Swimming pool is lovely with a waterfall – saltwater and unheated so a bit chilly.

We unpacked then got the bus into town. Bought Zach some swimming trunks as I forgot to pack him any. Had coffee then back to hotel by 12.00. We all then had to crash until about 17.00. we got the bus down to the marina and found a nice place called the Hog’s Breath Café for steaks etc for about $60.00. Zach went to bed a 9.00 so Col and I propped up the bar listening to the piano player/singer and knocking back Sambucca until midnight.

12 hours on a plane?! i would have totally lost it! Cairns sounds beautiful!! Did you stay at a resort?

Thanks for the wonderful report - I can imagine it in my mind. I would luv to visit Australia but everytime the holiday planning season rolls round all I can think of is WDW.

Once the flight(s) over it sounds great. What is the time difference? I can never quite work it out. A lovely start Elise.
