Off-site hotels near DL

Hello,

We are going to spend three nights in Disneyland after a few nights in San Diego. We are getting the Southern CA City Pass and will also be visiting Universal.

We want to stay close enough to the park to walk. What are your recommendations?

Also if we chose a hotel near the covention center, is it still walkable?

It is just DH and I so a pool or theme park view is not important. We are used to staying in Marriotts and Hiltons, which I saw were a little further than other hotels.

In particular any views on the Fairfield Inn, Howard Johnson or the Desert Inn and Suites?

You can walk from the convention center, but I think it is a bit far. We were right on harbor near the entrance. http://disneyland.disney.go.com/maps/#/m=good-neighbor

We like Candy Cane Inn. It is very close and about a 7 min fast walk for us. You can click on the link in my sig to see pictures. We will be going back for our third stay there this summer.

We enjoy the HoJo, but we're a big family....so the extra space, fun water play area & theme park view is great for us. You mentioned a view wasn't necessary, so they do have multiple buildings within their property. The grounds are beautiful as well. We love the beds here......very comfy!! (free parking & wifi)

I've got a friend that LOVES the Fairfield Inn, but after reading a number of views, we've avoided it. A lot of complaints about the staff.....but we don't have personal experience there.

Our last stay at the Desert Inn was in 05 & we weren't impressed. I've seen a lot of great reviews over the last year...so maybe things have improved. The rooms were big, but the beds were uncomfortable! The pool is inside & on the nasty side. We had an issue with our upstairs neighbor overflowing their bathtub to the point of pouring water onto one of our beds. Mgmt sent housekeeping up to change the bedding. My MIL called down & said the mattress is soaked & needed replaced. The mgr said, I don't think we have another mattress........after arguing with my MIL a few times......we got a mattress. The mgr was annoyed that dry bedding wasn't good enough. I'm sorry, but putting dry stuff on a soaked mattress was not going to work.
(not sure about wifi & parking here....been too long since we stayed)

There are a number of choices all varying in prices & "perks". Some come with free wifi &/or parking, some with breakfast, etc. So it kinda depends on what you're looking for.

The other places I've stayed is the Tropicana & the Carousel Inn. The Trop just changed their parking policy from free to paid which is causing some issues for those that booked prior to the change. (Trop charges for Wifi)

The Carousel Inn was quite comfy, but rooms a bit small due to the large furniture in them.....they charge for parking & wifi.

Right across the street is the Park Vue Inn, we are giving it a try in Jan. They have a nice free breakfast and evening "reception" meal. Seems like a lot of good reviews with some concern over noise which many hotels on harbor have said about them. There are some Marriott hotels in walking distance for adults, but it might get a little tiring after being at the parks all day. I don't remember if the Marriott or Hilton hotels have a shuttle but I think one of them does.

We've tried several...but always go back to the Candy Cane...close enoough to walk, but they have their own shuttle...also a block from the Gardenwalk mall, so we eat dinner over there after our pool breaks...there are lots of restaurants to choose from...CPK, Cheesecake Factory etc.... The staff at Candy Cane have always been great....the pool area is lovely (small pool)...and there are a couple of stores right next door for snacks, waters, icees by the pool, etc...oh, and the free breakfast is nice too.

We're trying the Jolly Roger for the first time this summer. I couldn't pass by their Disney package rate. We're going for two days, so a 2-night stay came to $83.00 a night (including taxes) if we purchased the park tickets through them. It was also only $4.00 a night cheaper than staying at the Motel 6, which is .8 miles from the park. It's a farther walk than I wanted to do, but considering the savings over the other hotels we've stayed it, it'll be worth it to us.

We're not too particular about hotels - if they're clean and not noisy I'm fine - so I'm willing to give just about anyplace a shot. We spend every minute the parks are open in the park, so the hotel is only someplace to sleep, park the car, and let the kids swim when we arrive. I'll be happy to post info from there once I return from vacation, but it won't be until sometime in July.
