Odd reasons for school being closed?

I am working on a paper for my masters, topic is culture differences in school districts across the country. What I am trying to find is what most people would consider odd reasons for a district to have a planned day off and a website I can use for a presentation.

Schools here were closed on Monday for Fair Day. They get a fair day every year.

There are a lot of schools that close so kids can go hunting or skiing. I know of one town in Wisconsin that had a 2 weeks off for deer hunting season (back in the 1980's-not sure if they still do). A friend lived out in Colorado for a while and their school got out early a couple days/week so kids could go skiing.

election day
The Pope's Birthday

Wind
Electricity being out (our kids go to school even if there is limited power in building-- I was shocked when I heard that)

Snow-- our district hardly ever closes for snow

School was closed early here because of a water problem. The toilets were flushing automatically and overflowing. The kids were unable to use bathrooms so they were let out early.

All of the schools in New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast close on Monday and Tuesday of Mardi Gras week.

Maine and Massachusetts get one "Monday Holiday" off that no one else seems to... I want to say its Patriots day but I'm not positive since I have been out for 6 years..

Our area gets two weeks off in September so the kids can help the farmers with Potato Harvest. Madawaska Middle/High School, Madawaska, Maine.

Fort Kent, St. Agatha also participate in the Potato Harvest Break. They even extended their days by 2 because of all the rain we got during this break.

We have also been known to change the week due to the readiness of the crop. Kids work HARD, start before the sun rises and end after sun goes down. There is controversy though, some family's don't think it's necessary.

It was 9/20-10/1 this year.

One of the schools here closed a few weeks ago because of a "suspicious package" was found outside. It turns out that the EPA had placed some canisters in the trees around all of the schools in the district to test the air quality. One of the underground oil pipelines had burst and the cleanup took awhile.

That same day, the rest of the district had school (apparently no one saw the canisters at the other schools), but we didn't have any bus service as the transportation facility was right where the oil was oozing out of the ground.

We also have off every year since 9/11 for election day as most of the schools are polling places.

The last few years we've also had an institute day on Halloween. I think that it's easier for the district to have no school than it is to deal with the party/no party issue.

Our kids must be better hunters here because many schools up north do that here... but it's only for Opening Day for firearms deer season. They don't need two weeks to bag da big buck! ;)

Another school system that used to have a unique "day off" was in Speedway, Indiana. They used to give the students a long weekend for the Indy 500.

The Monday after Thanksgiving the schools are closed for opening day of deer season.

Seriously? I live in Colorado and I've never heard of this! I also think it's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard!

In Bristol TN schools are closed the Friday of the August NASCAR race weekend.

In Illinois we would get Casimir Pulaski Day off. And we had absolutely no idea who he was. Important enough for an entire state to get the day off, but not important enough to teach their school children about. Not sure if they still get that day or not.

Seriously-they lived out there in 1996-98 somewhere in there. She thought it was stupid too. I am trying to remember where they were-a ski resort town somewhere. They had a second home there and were in the process of building another home so they lived there for a year while they were building their home (in Seattle).

Here in Florida what we get off for the most is Hurricanes,

I went to private Catholic school as a kid. Every spring we'd have a giant festival complete with rides, booths, food, live entertainment, etc. Typically, we would get off the Friday the festival started and the Monday after it ended.

They sure do. March 7.
