Odd Illnesses

I'm probably overreacting, but my DD13 has had an odd combonation of illnesses within the last week and there's been so many bugs going around I can't figure out what's up anymore. We returned from WDW on Monday after being there for a week, and early Wednesday morning (last week, in WDW) she woke up with bad food poisoning, that day (AM actually) vomiting and having diarrhea a good twenty times! :sick:

She could barely walk that day (almost had to take her to Celebration Hospital), and when she was finally back on her feet couldn't eat much w/out upsetting her stomach until Sunday (by the way, skip the crab salad at CG:;)). On Thursday I woke up a bit queezy myself, that was what lead me to think the food poisoning was bacterial and could be spread, though she may have caught it from food (an article my sister read). She was alright by Monday, but were traveling and it was hard for her to eat normally.

Though she still didn't have much of an appetite, she was able to go to school on Tuesday. On Tuesday and Wednesday she had a sore throat (which is usually the give away of a cold for us), but yesterday she had what seemed to be severe cold symptoms (her asthma doesn't help the cause), with a very full nose and unable to smell or taste a thing (which sounds like a sinus infection). I assumed it was a sinus infection as she's prone to them, so still made her go to school, but apparently she had a pretty miserable day. I let her stay home today since her symptoms stayed the same I figuered if I didn't I would get a call from the school pretty early.

Anyway, yesterday I just assumed it was a bad cold or sinus infection. When I talked to the school nurse this morning to call my DD in she said there haven't been many colds, but a lot of the flu, and that according to the symptoms it was probably a sinus infection as her symptoms weren't adding up to that of the flu. I checked out WebMD and it didn't sound like the flu. Then later today at the bank the teller (whom I'm sure is an unlegitament source of information) said she'd been hearing about people getting what the thought was the stomach flu but then getting a mild cold-like flu a week later. When you think about it doesn't really make sense why the same bug would cause both vomiting and a runny nose, but now with all of these flu scares I just don't know. You can catch so much in the airport, this girl behind us in the security line had what I could tell was a nasty cold, so I think she was just unlucky and either caught something or got a sinus infection right after being sick. I know your body can be extra vulnerable to germs when your body is weak.

So after all this rambling what my question is, does the stomach thing and the stuffy nose thing sound totally unrelated, or have any of you had things that are similair? Since we were in the airport she may have caught something that was going around in a whole other part of the country (yet another variable), so I can't go by what is being spread here.
Thanks!

We got the same thing here a few weeks ago, we got the food poisoning like symptoms ( pukes, the runs, and cramps) then just as we started to feel a bit better we came down with a fever, stuffy nose, sore throat and chills..

Alot of people I know got the same thing!

Just the past two weeks my kids (ages 6, 4 and 18 months) as well as my husband and I had a variety of symptoms, more extreme in some than others and we just found out my son (the 18 month old) tested positive for the flu. It's definite as they did a culture of his nose. Here's what each of us had: dd4 got hit first and hard. She was sick a week - extremely tired with high fever and vomiting. Got better after 2 days, even went to school, then relapsed the next day and was out the rest of the week. Then dd6 began vomiting (only 2times) and had a fever but it lasted only 1 day and then she was just tired. Dh got a fever. Then my son got hit bad - vomiting, croup, high fever, lathargic. That lasted all week. Then I got nausea (no vomiting) and a slight fever. Everyone but me ended up with a lingering cough. My daughters had very stuffy heads with runny noses. Moral of our story, apparently we each reacted differently to whatever strain of flu has hit us. Some of us had flu shots, some didn't - ped. said it was only 45% affective anyway. So yes, your daughter may have actually had the flu. It was amazing how different each of our bodies handled it. Spring can't get here fast enough!!!

Common symptoms of the flu are:
* Fever (usually high)
* Headache
* Tiredness (can be extreme)
* Cough
* Sore throat
* Runny or stuffy nose
* Body aches
* Diarrhea and vomiting (more common among children than adults)

Sounds exactly like the flu to me.

Food poisoning is unlikely.

Heres a crazy idea how about seeing a Doctor ;) Sounds like the flu to me but not qualified to make the call. We are just getting over tonsillitis in our house, bless the man that invented the drug that fixes that.

Agreed, and there was no way to tell if the stomach issues was food poision or might have been connected to these symptoms. Time to see someone that knows more than we do;) .

my family went through this week before last. first it was the symptoms that caused them to keep running to the bathroom, then it was a sore throat, then the cold symptoms hit. ended up both kids tested positive for strep throat (though neither had realy bad sore throats). i just got the cold symptoms, dh just the achyness aspects of the flu. kids ended up off school for an entire week (and the teachers both said they had most of the class out for the same reason).

somethings going around-but get it checked out.

I'd like to take her to the docter, almost had to in WDW, but the reason I ask here is because I have to wait until Monday (not bad enough for the ER).

And for those of you who had similar symptoms, did it go away on its own or was medication needed (tamiflu or anything else)? My DD is starting to feel better, when she woke up this morning she said her nose was less stuffy and her mucous wasn't green.

By the way, she had the flu shot, but I know there's been a whole different strain going around. She only had a fever and stomach issues last week, so it is so hard to tell what's going on.

Flu meds like tamiflu are generally most effective if given in the first 48 hours of the flu. Considering its a week out, I doubt they would give her anything. Honestly, it just sounds like the whole nasty thing that has been going around here, and its viral. I would just keep her comfy and well hydrated.

Well, this has been going on for about 4 weeks in my house. My kids seem to be jumping around with what they've got.

4 weeks ago, DS (3) had one day of severe vomiting and high fever. He was better the next day. 6 days later, DS (1) got very sick, very fast. He was diagnosed with croup, but he had a fever as high as 105.0. He was cranky, lethargic, no appetite, diarrhea, and vomiting. He had a cough for a week.

Then, last Sunday, I had a sore throat and "stomach issues", as described in this thread. I had about 3 days of extreme fatigue and a horrible cough that I could not control (kept me up at night). My chest still feels "off" (sort of achy and congested). I've had a headache for a week now, just can't shake the yucky feeling of being sick.

Last night, my DS (3) seemed to get sick all over again. All day yesterday, he had the same uncontrollable cough I had last week. He woke at 1:45 burning up with a fever and crying. He was coughing awful. I gave him ibuprofen and cough meds (Robitussin DM) and he went back to sleep. He's still feverish this morning, and coughing.

It's like it will never end...and the worst is that there is nothing but rest and fluids that will make it go away. My younger son's pedi prescribed Amoxicillin due to his high fever that did not go away after 3 days, but even after 10 days on the antibiotics, he's still not 100% better.

It's a nasty bug for sure, and EVERYONE seems to be getting it.

To the OP: I doubt your daughter had "food poisoning". Food poisoning does not cause lingering stomach upset. She just happened to get the stomach portion of this bug while you were at WDW. It's unfortunate, but if it had been TRUE food poisoning, you'd have heard about it. Those types of outbreaks usually make news, because it is required to be reported to the local health agencies (even if you didn't go to the hospital, chances are other people WOULD have).

Yeah, I'm going to have to break down and guess that's what it is. Last Monday we were stuck in the airport for eight hours (six hour delay, the ideal start to a less than desirable vacation), so that's a very likely spot to catch something.

It is a little odd though that it hasn't spread through the household like most things do.

It always makes me feel better to know that whatever is going around in our house isn't JUST us; makes me feel like maybe we do NOT have the plague, and are, gasp, normal. :)

So I'll let you know that that's about the combo of symptoms that the three of us had here 2 weeks ago. Totally disproving Pasteur's Germ Theory (or we each managed to react to different organisms despite eating the same, breathing the same air, having a family bed, and so on), each of us got different symptoms, and were miserable in our own little ways.

Now DH says that it's "going back around" at work, so I'm steeling my reserves of "calm" for that, and since today all three of us woke up with headaches, I think tomorrow will dawn both early (time change) and painfully.

But 2 weeks ago, we all got through it with just time, Emergen-C, water, and rest. :)

My whole family just hasnt been feeling "100%" lately either, dd13 is pretty much braindead, not really thinking much along with a stuffy nose at times, one of the twins has been just out completly with a fever, stuffy nose, you name it she's got it. The other twin has a sore throat, but tolerates it, and has only taken one day off school. Yeah, this has been one f the worst cold seasons ever it seems! I guess with air travel, and parents sending their kids into activites even when they have fevers, everything spreads pretty fast.

my dd6 about 3 weeks ago started off with a minor cold which transitioned into a stomach virus.... while she was fighting the stomach virus symptoms ("throwin and goin") the cold symptoms disappeared... then oddly when the stomach part was over with the cold reappeared immediatley. It was an odd bug and was off and on for about a week with all kinds of odd symptoms. I work at a hospital and when I was talking to our pediatrics nurse manager she said they had treated a lot of kids with the same symptoms who had been diagnosed as having the flu. my youngest dd also ended up with it, same odd symptoms coming and going, though she has a less severe form. DH and I had it, he had no cold symptoms justy the stomach stuff and I had the stomach and severe cold symptoms. So the flu can apparently rear its ugly head in different ways, no always classic symptoms. Also we all had our flu shots...guess the shot did not cover the bug the we got :(

My DD use to vomit and have cold like symptoms when she had strep. It could be a flu bug or something like strep.
