Odd Hotel Question

A friend of mine recently returned from Montreal after staying at a LOEWS hotel.She tells me that at check-in,her husband handed the girl his "LOEWS FIRST CARD" and a $20.00 and they were given quite a nice room upgrade. Is this common practice at check-in at the Universal hotels?If I ask for an upgrade and none are available,do I "flash some cash"?Has anyone ever done this?

I've never tried it. They usually will upgrade you to Bayview just for the asking.

I would hope this isn't the norm. I have been able to get upgrades w/o handing over money.

Well,I guess we'll just have to wait for "check-in" to see what's available.Hopefully,they'll have some up-grades.
