October seas

I'm a little nervous about sailing in October. I've read a lot of posts saying they've sailed then and the seas have been rough. I don't get motion sickness or anything, but I'm not sure if my fiancee does, and sailing through (or around) a hurricane/tropical storm doesn't sound all that great to me. We're sailing the last week in Oct. any info would be helpful!

Hi, we sailed at the end of last Oct (which is past Hurricane season) It was during the 1st little cold snap of the season and the wind had picked up. We didn't notice the ship moving except for the last day when we were in the forward theater and you could feel a slight shift. It was beautiful on Castaway Cay temperature wise but the winds at sea were making it choppy at the beach so that the water wasn't clear enough to snorkle. But none of this really hampered our vacation. We had a great time!

Hope you do too!

I believe that the "rule of thumb" is any month ending in "er" has the potential for hurricanes.

IIRC, there was a hurricane out to sea during our cruise mid-last October, but except for one rather rough night when crossing the gulf stream (which I'm told is always a little on the rough side) the sailing was perfect.

Sailing around a hurricane (which is what the ship will do if one poses a problem) is much preferable to sailing thru a hurricane - plus it potentially brings the possibility of different and unexpected ports of call (a mystery cruise).

On the Magic sailing dates Oct 27, 2001-Nov 3. We didn't get to Castaway Cay, the wind was blowing just hard enough that the Capt could not keep the ship in line to back into the port. He gave it his all, but it was to risky. We got to spend another relaxing day at sea. Other than that we pretty much had smooth sailing.

Join us for Halloween, don't forget your costume and candy. We decorated our staterooms and the outer doors. We held a "DIS" Hunt for our staterooms Trick-or-Treat for the children in our group. Then we all had lunch at Lumiere's, some still in costumes. On Monday of our cruise the adults had Brunch at Palo's "YUMMY" . Like I said before we had a blast. Some of us are doing it again this year. New ports of call.:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

I can't remember exactly when hurricane season ends, but I'm pretty sure October is still in it, as all the bad hurricanes that have past us down here in S. FL that I recall have been in Octobers. During one, the water was up to my knees in the street!

Hurricane season is June through November. There was even a storm, Hurricane Olga, in the Atlantic in December of last year. In October 2000, we were re-routed due to Hurricane Joyce, and went to Key West instead of St. Maarten. We never had problems with rough seas, though. If they avoid a storm, then they really do avoid it. You can run into rough seas at any time of the year. I think the only additional risk of sailing during hurricane season is that you might be re-routed. I don't think that the seas will necessarily be higher during that time, though.

We sailed on the Magic Oct. 13th last year. The seas were rated as 'rough' much of the time, but it was not particularly bothersome. My 9 yr old DD felt a little queasy the first evening, but after a half-tablet of "Simply Motion" and a 30 minute nap, she was 100% and the motion of the ship never bothered her again all week. My son was too busy having fun to realize that we were even moving. We felt a gentle rocking each night as we laid in bed, but it was more relaxing than bothersome! Unless you're prone to seasickness, you'll find that you will adjust and get your sea legs after a day or so - then just forget that you're on a ship, and have fun!

Ginger you got cheated! We sailed on the Wonder 2 days behind you and while it was a little windy it was still a great day at Castaway Cay. Maybe not for snorkling but for laying around having fun with the "fam" type days.

While I wouldn't wish a hurricane on anyone this Sept. (especially Mobile cause I'm not coming home until after my vacation) I wish that we'd be re-routed. I've seen Nassau twice now and didn't really care for it the first 2 times. Freeport was kinda nice, it's obvious they've made a lot of effort for tourists. But Castaway Cay has made it all worth while both our trips.

I'll be glad when we're done with the taking "my parents, his parents" thing so we can afford the 7 day trip and see new ports.

We have sailed Disney twice at the beginng of October and had gorgeous weather both times.

We've sailed twice in October and the first time was beautiful. Calm seas, blue sky, white puffy clouds...the second time, we were followed by a tropical storm on the way to the islands and followed one back (not the same one) on the way back home. The seas were a little rough and the blue sky and puffy clouds turned to overcast and rain clouds off and on throughout the entire cruise. The way back was the worse. I had signed up for a line dancing lesson and the boat pitched so much that we were all bumping into each other. BUT...we all had a wonderful time. What a way to meet your neighbors...My DH is prone to sea sickness and he just took his medication every morning and wasn't bothered a bit. It's the luck of the draw as far as the weather goes but my DH's favorite saying is "Well, we're here and we're not going to spend our vacation in our hotel room".

Hurricane season is officially from June 1 to November 30, but the peak of activity tends to be from mid-August to mid-October.
