I have been looking at the website for the tours which Valerie has been investigating and it certainly looks amazing. I definitely want to do a cultural tour at one of our ports of call and this one looks really interesting and informative, and run by the locals which is important. If we do end up going to Costa Maya I will hopefully book this tour. I also like the idea of giving something back - visiting the school and giving them supplies, as giving my kids the opportunity to make a difference first hand to the lives of others would probably be the most valuable experience they could have on this vacation.

I'm working the 12 hour shifts at the hospital :-( But, I'm off mon, wed, and fri next week. :hyper:

Christine and Max are going to basic manners class (greyhounds only) on Sunday.

Interesting to hear about Costa Maya. Wonder when DCL will commit to stopping there, and start to post excursion options?

I'm also working a 12 hour shift at the hospital tomorrow and on Monday. On Sunday I am participating in the Race for Life with my daughter and thousands of other women in aid of cancer research. I will be the one huffing and puffing at the back, as I am not as fit as I should be. :rotfl2:
Hopefully next week I may make a start on our pirate cotumes as I have 4 days off, although I do have to shop for a dress for a wedding party next Friday, and that could take some time!

have a great week everybody!:goodvibes

LOL! I like Doom Buggies....brings up fun memories of Haunted Mansion!!!

We're not sure what we're going to do for excursions if at all. I'd like to do some ruins-type things but with Ameera being just 2 atc I'm not sure if we'd even be able to do one! I remember not a lot of excursions for the under 5 crowd...so we'd just be happy to get off and take a taxi ride around to see the area. We'll look into it more in July. Hopefully DCL will have something by then.

This weekend....well, tomorrow is ANOTHER graduation of a friend's child. This is the 2nd oldest sister of the two girls that are coming along with us on the cruise. It should be a good time but this is the third one we've already been to in the last two weeks! AND we still have 2 more to go!!!

Sunday, I think we might be going into DC for the Shalom DC Festival. It's the 60th birthday of Israel becoming a nation. Mandy Patinkin and some of the Sesame Street characters will be there along with some other entertainment, so it should be fun! Just hope that the weather holds out. Supposed to rain tomorrow, so we'll see. That and how Tori is doing. Had to take her back to the dr. on Wednesday because she was getting sicker and her cough was terrible. Three weeks of it is enough for anyone!! She's doing better with the antibiotics but she's still tired. She was home from school on Tuesday and Wednesday. And only 10 days left of school!! LOL! What a time to miss school!

Everyone have a great weekend! Missed chat last night and when I remembered, no one was on (I think it was around 10:45ish)....so we'll see if I remember tomorrow night!!

Sean, good luck with the greyhound manners class - well, CHristine really - and sorry you have to work this weekend. BUT your days off next week sound great!!!

Woody, have a great time at the concert!!! I'm jealous!

Sarah: work - sorry, the Race - YOU CAN DO IT!!!, costumes - well.....hmm....not sure about that one!, dress for the wedding - think of it as doubling for a formal for the cruise! Good Shopping!!

AND, finally, WELCOME TO ALL THE NEWBIES!!!!

All right, gotta go...Wii is calling....

Hello Fellow Cruisers!!

Here's the latest update from Ivan. Must admit, I like the idea of the Chacchoben Extreme Tour Jackie bookmarked, but I also like the idea of the Experience Tour Ivan noted - really want to give the boys an idea of life for children in a different culture.

Dear Valerie,

Thank you for helping us spread the news!

At the moment we can handle up to six groups of ten people each.
Regarding your question about what tour we recommend for children, I would say that many families prefer our Chacchoben Mayan Ruins Tour. This tour is perfect for anyone who likes adventure and exploring a little. It is completed in 4 hours so it would give you time for other activities after the tour in Mahahual Village or back at the port.

On the other hand many other families prefer our Mayan Experience Tour specially since it includes a shorter version or our Chacchoben Mayan Ruins Tour, plus a visit to our village (Chacchoben Village) where children have the opportunity to interact with children from a different culture and see how different their life is. Probably what children enjoy the most about this tour is the visit to the home of a Mayan family where they can try a hammock, see how everything in the house is organized and even make their own tortilla at lunch time. This tour is completed in 5 hours.

Regarding school supplies, we are still bringing as many as we can for the children in our village and other Mayan communities where those are needed. As usual, we would be pleased to arrange a visit to the school (if children are still in class at the time of our visit) or we can simply stop by their houses (if classes are over for the day) so you can personally give the supplies to the children.

Very best,
Ivan Cohuo

Based on the website, if they come to the port to pick us up, it costs $10 per person. If we get the shuttle to their office, it costs $3 per person. To get the shuttle you have to walk through the port area, and it's then a 5 minute ride. The instructions are in the How to Find Us section of their website. To be honest, for the sake of a short walk and shuttle ride, I'd rather save the $28!

Also, based on the info on the website, a deposit of $10 - $15 USD per person (depending on which tour booked) is required at booking, with the balance at check in. Their site also states "if excursion participants are arriving via cruise ship and are unable to dock at all on their scheduled itinerary date, all prepayments and deposits for excursions confirmed for that date and cruise ship will be refunded".

Okay, so what questions do we now need to ask? This is what I have come up with so far -(I think I found/posted the answers to the other questions from within the website)...

1. How long of a walk is it to the shuttle from the ship?
2. Can they accomodate more than 1 tour? (Just thinking if we have two different groups that want to do two different tours for example).

I am fine with continuing to be the contact person for this - and it seems like there's quite a bit of interest in the tours they offer with us, which I think is great. But if anyone else has any questions they can think of, it would be great to let me know, and I'll send another e-mail tomorrow with our questions. They are certainly very prompt in replying!

Valerie

Valerie, great job on all your research!

I think we are interested in the ruins tour only- but would love to participate in dropping off supplies. Can you ask if the supplies can be brought and dropped off on either the ruins only tour as well as the extreme tour? If so, are the prices they show on their packages the same or do they charge more for stopping at a school or home? Our kids are just too young to justify the extreme tour which would cost $20-$25 more per person to have lunch somewhere and visit a home and or lagoon. My kids normally are lucky to eat 1/2 a sandwich before they are full!

Also could you find out how they want us to individually pay yet be grouped on the same tours?

Cant wait to find out how far we are from the pick up and drop off points! If they drop us off at the Mahahual Village, are we able to walk back to the ship or will we need to take a cab back. If we can walk, how long is the walk?

Thanks Valarie!

Woody- I am jealous as well! Love Jackson Browne!

OK, just popping in to post my 75th post to see if it changes my DIS standing!

We went to a church festival tonight and of course I blew my weight loss efforts by eating a funnel cake with lots and lots of powdered sugar! It was great though!

The rest of this weekend we will be up at our lake. I am hoping to teach my kids how to swim this summer. At the very least, I hope they will no longer be afraid to get their faces wet. That is such a big step!

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Congratulations Mouseketeer Laura!!

I like the ruins idea too.

Yet, my kids want to do a dolphin excursion and DH and I were thinking it would be nice to just go browsing a bit.

Decisions, decisions!

Hi everyone. Its been a long time since I've been on. We finally booked our flight down and our hotel. We are going to be in Orlando on the 24th and staying at the Crowne Plaza that night. I'm trying to figure out transportation for the day of the cruise. I'm not sure if it is best to use Disney or to go through someone else. If anyone has any info or ideas I am open to anything. :listen: :listen: :listen:

Its almost here! I feel so stressed at the moment. It seems like there is so much to do and no time to do it. I cant wait! -Vanessa

I just got off the Magic on Sunday, and can now concentrate on this cruise. Only five months to go.

I'm no expert, but we went on the November 2006 Costa Maya cruise and went on the Native Choice tour of the Chacchoben Ruins. Since then, Costa Maya suffered very extensive hurricane damage, so my observations might be outdated.
As they say in the car commercials: YMMV.

Valerie -- you've done an excellent job of gathering information. Keep it up.

While on the Magic, I asked the Cruise Sales Manager whether the October '08 Costa Maya cruise will be able to actually stop at Costa Maya. She said they did not know, and probably won't know until September. In the meantime, they are looking at other ports.

Personally, I would not book an independent excursion at any port where it's still uncertain whether the ship will even stop there. On a different Disney cruise, I booked an independent excursion for our group in Mexico, and the Magic did not stop there due to weather. After numerous long distance calls and e-mails, I never got a refund (for six people), despite what they said on the website. (NOTE: This was NOT with the Native Choice, and I don't mean to even suggest that they would act this way. YMMV.)

The port at Costa Maya is not like any port I've been to. It was developed by private investors to exclusively serve the cruise industry. In the port area, there are many shops, restaurants, souvenir booths, jewelry stores, and at least one swimming pool with lounge chairs and pool level bar (swim up to the bar, order and enjoy drinks while in the pool).

In other words, you could spend all your time and money without leaving the security gates. While you are insulated in the port from the local culture (oh, like Disney!), you don't have to deal with the undesirables. (Last week in Acapulco, after I left the port terminal, I was propositioned seven times in a short period.)

I'll try to answer some of the specific questions.

Based on the website, if they come to the port to pick us up, it costs $10 per person. If we get the shuttle to their office, it costs $3 per person. To get the shuttle you have to walk through the port area, and it's then a 5 minute ride. . . . To be honest, for the sake of a short walk and shuttle ride, I'd rather save the $28!
In 2006, I recall the Chacchoben Ruins tour was $43 per adult. Because we had a large group, it cost $2 more per person to be picked up at the port.

I think the $10 p/p charge on the website is if a couple or family wants to be picked up. In 2006, it was different since we were filling the buses.

You have to walk through the port area to the parking lot for any transportation -- shuttle, or tour bus.

Personally, in 2006, we planned to walk to the meeting place in town (I think it was the Cat's Meow restaurant), or take a shuttle rather than pay $10 p/p to be picked up. When they offered to do it for $2 p/p, we jumped on it.

Also, based on the info on the website, a deposit of $10 - $15 USD per person (depending on which tour booked) is required at booking, with the balance at check in.
With our large group, we did not have to pay until we got on the bus.

Can they accomodate more than 1 tour? (Just thinking if we have two different groups that want to do two different tours for example).
Yes. David or Ivan will take one group on the Chacchoben Ruins tour, and the other will take the second group and add the lunch and/or school visit option.

In 2006, DCL also offered tours of the Ruins. And I also know people who separately booked other independent excursions to the Ruins.

While we enjoyed the Native Choice tour, it was neither everything we expected it to be, nor everything that was promised on the website. On balance I would recommend it, but personally would not book it until DCL confirms we will stop at Costa Maya.

DCL will offer tours of the Ruins. If you book through DCL, and we don't stop there, your stateroom account will not be charged. (Last week, certain excursions were canceled before arrival in the port due to weather, and those who booked through DCL were not charged.)

Valerie -- After the 2006 cruises, Disney has a great deal of goodwill with Native Choice. You might try asking on this thread how many people would go on the tours if we stop at Costa Maya. Once you have that number, you could tell Native Choice it's the Disney ship, we have so many adults and so many children, we would like to be picked up at the port, and ask what are the adult/child prices. You might get better group pricing that way.

On our bus ride to the Ruins, we saw schoolchildren and schoolhouses from the bus. We left a collection of school supplies with Ivan and David for the schools.

I spoke with people who made a visit to a school, and they found it rewarding.

In 2006, several people posted trip reports about the Ruins tour and the home and school visits. They are worth reading, if available, for more perspective.

Again, YMMV.

I hope this helps.

Woody

Thanks Woody for the great tips....
We were hoping to book a ruins tour through DCL, good to know that if it doesn't pan out we are not charged.

Wonder if it doesn't stop at Costa Maya, where it would stop (DH and I hope for Grand Cayman).

Hi everyone! My DD and I have been trying to see if there are any other girls her age on this cruise. She is worried she will be the only girl in her group. I keep trying to tell her I am sure there will be more her age. She will be 8 when we sail. If anyone has any DD's her age could you please post it for her. Thanks everyone!

Thanks for the info and tips Woody. I agree, it is really hard to plan for a port that we're not even sure yet if we'll get to, so at this point, all we can really do is check out options. Also, I was looking at the new Passporter tonight, and it does have a section on Costa Maya (sorry - it wasn't listed in the index, and I didn't realize it was there) and the Disney excursions for that port, if people want to have a look - DCL also offers a ruins tour in CM, by the way. I'll add yours and Midwest Cruisers questions/points to the next e-mail and see what I get back.

But in the meantime, based on Woody's suggestion - if we do go to Costa Maya, can people give me an idea of their (tentative) plan to book with David & Ivan, which tour, and how many adults/children in your group? If I can give them some idea of numbers, I can ask the questions about deposits and being picked up at port that Woody suggested. Thanks everyone.

I have an 8 year old daughter and 10 year old daughter. I'm sure they would love to play together!

I booked breakfast yesterday morning at Boatwrights the morning we head to the ship! They asked if we had anyone under 17 in our party -- I said no, just big kids at heart.

DH and I figured we would get a nice walk from POFQ to POR (since our shuttle doesn't get us until 12:15, we thought it would be a while till we had lunch).

We also checked out the menus at Earl of Sandwich & Ghiradellis for the night before ... thanks to my Disney Dream Dollars, we're covered! Wahoo. :)

I love breakfast at boartwrights!!! Yummy!! ENJOY!
