October 17, 2009 Western

Were on the 10/17/09 Western Caribbean too! Booked last spring, although time has gone slow, it's now already Jan and we have only 9mos to go!!
It will be our 1st cruise and we are so excited! We'll be celebrating my husband's 40th and our 9 yr anniversary. Along for the ride will be our DD who will be 5 and DS who will be 3.

Looks like the best of both worlds, lots of fun Disney activities for the kids (and us) and alone time for my husband and I!!!

Hi, There! Welcome to the thread. I'll add you both to our growing list of thread members listed on post one. Got to run for now. I'm about to leave for work. I mention this only because it's my cruise fund job. I spend a lot of time thinking about and remembering our cruises while I work. It keeps me going when I get bored or tired.

Shannon, how's the new-ish job going?

Thanks for asking! I'm settling in nicely at work. I was definitely a little overwhelmed at first There is SO MUCH paperwork (should have been expected from the government;) ) and procedures to learn. I've found my niche, and they tell me I am a huge help. I can see where things are running a little smoother since I've been there. Desks are cleaner, and piles are smaller. There is a small maintenance crew of 6, but I mainly work with the manager and her assistant. I'm the assistant's assistant (remember, government). I have lovingly nicknamed my self the double a$$:lmao: The girls are great, a real pleasure to work with. There is great teamwork, and real honesty. I've conquered a small project, and am delving into a larger one now. I have had a little contact with some of the residents. (back up, I think I mentioned that the job is with public housing?) No one had been offensive at all, a few have been seemingly appreciative. Only one incident thus far. A domestic dispute made it's way into our office. Kind of sad to see, but all ended peacefully. The hours are working out great with DS's schedule. I go in after dropping him off at school, and have about an hour and a half after work before I need to pick him up. They also have told me they're very flexible with scheduling, should I need something. Hopefully, it continues to be a positive experience. It's never a good time when you don't enjoy your work. And you can't beat all these holidays:cloud9:

My BFF is sailing this week. She left yesterday aboard RCI Majesty of the Seas, and was in Nassau today. Tomorrow is private island, Thursday Key West, and then back home Friday. She's missing possible subzero temps, expecting the kids to be off at least Thursday and Friday, maybe tomorrow too. We'll see. I'm staying hunkered (sp) down here. Not going out except for work. Brrrrrrrrrrr.

Welcome to all of our new friends. When is a good time to start discussing an onboard meet, and FE exchange? I would be willing to help as much as possible, but don't feel I can take the responsiblity of organizing as I have not participated in the past. I'm eager to start planning!!

Sorry I have been gone so long. I have been planing for my Birthday cruise in Six weeks to St Croix. Also, we just joined DVC in Sep so trying to get that all squared away. Still just wanted to say hi, and I will try to stay a little more up to date with you guys.

Shannon, I think you would do a great job of being in charge of the FE. It's a no-experience required job. My friend Patty (who I met through our cruise meet thread and is now my friend) did it for our last cruise. She kept a running list of who wanted to participate and our room numbers. That was most of it. We all discussed a deadline for joining the FE and any other issue that came up. If you have the enthusiasm for it, I nominate you. How do you feel about a post on the general DCL forum requesting advice about organizing the FE?

Today is 9 months from arrival time for us. Usually we take the Autotrain, but now that our oldest ds is 14, I don't know if he's eligible for the summer special of 2 kids free with paying adult. If gas prices stay under 3.00 a gallon, it might be a lot more cost-effective for us to drive down.

My older brother in law is officially going. He's going to room with our sons in the inside room. He was joking that it couldn't be any more cramped or messy than the youth hostels he's stayed in, so I'm thinking I might surprise the boys by making door magnets that say "Paire Family Youth Hostel".

Hi Alan
We joined DVC in Dec 07 and are using points for this cruise. We also plan to stay at WDW on points 3 nights prior the the cruise. Which resort did you purchase? We purchased SSR and plan on buying VGC (Grand Californian) in the next month or so...

We bought at Animal Kingdom villas. Honestly I do not think we will ever cruise with points. Working for an airline, we can get out to WDW almost evey other month for 3-4 nights if we avoid the weekend. I love that. Still I am so glad we finaly bought it. It was two year decision.

aan1701 - You will love DVC. We have been members for over 10 years and I think it was one of the best investments I made. DVC used to offer an Alaskan cruise through HAL with the points and we did that about 4 years ago. That was a beautiful cruise. I think you will find that the resort you own really does not impact taking a vacation. I have not had a problem making a ressie at any of the WDW resorts.

Shannon - I think you will make a great FE boss. After all with the government job I am sure you will be getting a lot of days off so you will have plenty of time to keep all of the FE people "on the hook" :rotfl2:

Nine months from today and we are on the ship with Mickey and Minnie and all of their friends.

Greetings and Salutations everyone!

My wife (Melissa, 25) and I (Josh, 27) recently changed our dates and will be joining you all on the October 17th Western! I am a teacher and originally booked the Oct 3rd Western, but the school district bumped our 2009 Fall Break back a few weeks.

This will be our 2nd DCL vacation -- our first being and 3night Wonder Cruise in May 2008 kicking off our Disney Honeymoon! We rebooked onboard and simply cannot wait for the cruise to get here! Only 9 months! Wahoo!

Also joing us will be my parents (Ed and Judy 56) -- veteren cruisers, but new to the DCL scene.

Melissa and I LOVED the Fish Extender Experience in May and I would be more than happy to organize (or help organize) the exchange -- my summer off will allow plenty of time -- and heck, I'm a teacher, I'm naturally organized! :) Just let me know if you'd like my help! We made our FE last year and will be helping my parents make theirs. It was so much fun!

I look forward to getting to know you all and joining you on the Magic!

Cheers,
Josh

Hi! I am Wendy, a High School Biology (will be 40 by the time we cruise!) from Aberdeen, Scotland. My mum, Doreen (75) will be sailing on this cruise - our 10th DCL cruise. Have mainly sailed on the Magic but have done a B2B on the Wonder. The ports arent our favourite but they fit in with my school vacation times. And we loved the Fish Extender Experience on our last cruise!

Welcome Josh!
We are so excited for Oct 09! This is our first cruise and I'm reading up on FE's so we can participate!

Wow, this is great! So many more Cruise Meet friends! :grouphug: Be right back, I'm going to add you all to the growing list we're keeping on the first post of this thread. If you want to add any more information than what's already posted, let me know!

Happy 9 Month Milestone, everyone! :hourglass

Hi, back:wave2: OOOH, St. Croix. That sounds great right now!

Yes six weeks from right now I will be on The Magic sailing to St. Croix. I can not wait. Though not for the weather, as it was like 80 today and I was at a beach with waves. I hate a beach that has no waves. I can also tell you that we do not do the FE thing.

Sigh....I'm so jealous! Iwanna go to St. Croix too! Take me with you! ;)

Sounds like your weather is nice too -- its in the teens here with snow on the ground!

Hope everyone has had a great Monday! Hope to chat with you all more this week!

Cheers,
Josh

Yes the weather is awesome, the reason why I put up with Los Angeles. It will be taking a bad turn as rain is in the forcast for Wed. and Thurs. Anywai I can't wait for my birthday cruise in Six weeks on the magic.

Oh, Josh, you made my day with that:cool1: I really didn't want the responsibility. I do not pride myself for organization. I did research it a little on the boards. It sure does sound fun. I'll definitely be active with ideas and decisions when it's time, but I'll gladly let you, (or anyone else who may want to) run the show.

I can't believe this week went so quickly...Hope the rest of winter does the same. We're buried here in Ohio. A lot of it melted yesterday, with a tropical high of 40°. But, it is plummeting once again. Oh well, we have the "change of seasons", right?

Ditto on the week going quickly! I like the idea of weeks flying by if it means :beach: comes sooner and this severe cold winter comes to an end. I wouldn't mind the cold if we'd get some snow!

Does anyone besides me live near Washington DC? Our list has grown so much I can't keep track of who lives where. I wish we could make a little map and put virtual pushpins on it with where we are from.

It looks like our family will be driving to Florida this time. The Auto Train summer special (kids free with parents) ends September 30th. With five passengers, the Autotrain is now almost as expensive as flying for us. Who else plans to drive? Who's flying? Anyone taking the Auto Train? Sorry if I asked this before.

Hi all,

Well, we're about dug out again. I don't think the next mess is coming till Tuesday. I think we're just about an inch shy of breaking the record for snowfall in the month of January. So proud:rolleyes: What have I been up to. Well, DS just had his first ever report (2nd grade). We did Thomas Edison. Lesson learned. Next time, we're doing the timeline or other graphic project first, to get him interested. Like pulling teeth to get it written. Minimum of 2 paragraphs. Paragraphs are 5-8 sentences. So, we had (you guessed it) 10 sentences total in his report. Couldn't talk him into more. So, we did that. Our town is trying to pass a tax levy, and I have been calling residents urging them to vote. If we pass it, we get 19.2 million dollars in grant form from a tobacco settlement. That pays for 46% of our project. It failed in November by less than 40 votes. Keep your fingers crossed. Tomorrow, we have a party to attend for our nephew. His 19th birthday was Wednesday, and he is moving to Tennessee next week. I know he won't miss this snow cr*p here in Ohio. DH's aunt and uncle leave next Thursday, sailing Friday on NCL jewel 9 day southern route. Boy, I wish we were going. Just over $700, but can't take the time with the new job, or I'd be there. Really want to go Southern. Someday:cloud9: Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

Oh yeah, to answer your question, we should be flying down. Well, I am. Hopefully DH and DS will join me:thumbsup2 Don't like to drive.
