Ok, What are geocachers? :confused3

Thanks (I think)

I really can't answer first hand...so...I needed to consult - with...well...Wikipedia. This activity appears to be growing in leaps and bounds. Ya heard it here folks.

Geocaching is an outdoor treasure-hunting game in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers (called "geocaches" or "caches") anywhere in the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook and "treasure," usually toys or trinkets of little value. Today, well over 440,000 geocaches are registered on various websites devoted to the sport. Geocaches are currently placed in 222 countries around the world and on all seven continents, including Antarctica.

For the traditional geocache, a geocacher will place a waterproof container, containing a log book (with pen or pencil) and trinkets or some sort of treasures, then note the cache's coordinates. These coordinates, along with other details of the location, are posted on a website. Other geocachers obtain the coordinates from the Internet and seek out the cache using their GPS handheld receivers. The finding geocachers record their exploits in the logbook and online. Geocachers are free to take objects from the cache in exchange for leaving something of similar or higher value, so there is treasure for the next person to find.

Typical cache treasures are not high in monetary value but may hold intrinsic value to the finder. Aside from the logbook, common cache contents are unusual coins or currency, small toys, ornamental buttons, CDs, or books. Also common are objects that are moved from cache to cache, such as Travel Bugs or Geocoins, whose travels may be logged and followed online. Occasionally, higher value items are included in geocaches, normally reserved for the "first finder", or in locations which are harder to reach.

Geocaches can range in size from "microcaches," too small to hold anything more than a tiny paper log, to those placed in five-gallon buckets or even larger containers.

If a geocache has been vandalized or stolen, it is said to have been "muggled" or "plundered." The former term plays off the fact that those not familiar with geocaching are called "geo-muggles" or just muggles, a term borrowed from the Harry Potter series of books.[4]

If a cacher discovers that a cache has been muggled, it can be logged as needing maintenance, which sends an e-mail to the cache owner so it can be repaired, replaced, or archived (deactivated).

Any one interested in searching for a cache on Castaway Cay..I'll put you in touch our fantastic friends (I really can't call them friends...they are family).

There is a Geo cache in our town, its a statue of "Madonna Of The Trail"
(a statue honoring pioneer women)
The geo cachers come here and make a rubbing of the engraving at the foot of the statue.

We have booked a spa appointment :thumbsup2 at 5:00 pm on the day we are in St. Thomas....any thoughts on wether or not I should try to change it to another day or time? We have an excursion booked for that day that ends at noon which would give us a few hours before getting back on the boat. We might want to check out a beach or two while there but would having that appointment give us enough time to do everything?
Thank you in advance.....

So are we really serious about the Grass Skirt thing? I am sure I could get one at WDW at the Poly.

Hey Robin. As much as I would LOVE to see my husband in a grass skirt (especially since he actually said he'd be willing to wear it) I am assuming it isn't happening. I've got my mardi gras beads and am ready to go. :)

To All: If I'm wrong about the grass skirts and people are really wanting to do it, let me know. Kristi

After your excursion, I would head over to Megan's Bay....It was rated as 1 of the top 10 beaches in the Caribbean. You can get a taxi right at the port, I think it's 6 dollars per person. Make sure you bring your camara, the trip takes you to one of the highest spots on St. Thomas, you can see the port and the DISNEY MAGIC! I would leave some time for shopping as well, there are great deals to be had...Just ask my WIFE!:rotfl2: :sad2: :rotfl2:

I say we do the grass skirt meet...I will be wearing one regardless, Hey, we are on vacation, you have to let loose every once in awhile! My family and I will be on deck 11 midship around 4:00, Anyone and everyone is welcome, grass skirts or not, but the more the merrier.

We'll be wearing our Mardi Gras beads!

Can't believe we are leaving 6 weeks from tomorrow to go to FL. It seems like we have been planning FOREVER! :hourglass

September is going to fly by with all the back to school meetings and activities - it will be here before you know it!

Thank you Kborn for the info on St. Thomas....

My DW asked me this morning if the Kids club is open for the kids anytime they want to go or are there times when it will be full or restricted and they can't go in.....I wasn't sure and hoped someone could shed some light on it for me. I have looked around the DIS and haven't found anything on it for this specific question.

I think she just wanted to be sure we didn't have to sign them up for specific times and so forth....

I only used the club/lab once with my 9yo nephew, May '06. You can't sign in/out during transitions times, that is when they are moving from one location on the ship to another. His favorite activities were on Castaway Cay. HTH!

Dobelover,
Thanks for the info and yes any info is always helpful.:)

Do they have a schedule for activities in the kids club that they post either on the navigator or somwhere else on the ship?? Our DD has been very exited about the Goofy sleepover thing and I was also wondering if there were certain activities in the club that need to be signed up for ahead of time....

Thank you all for the info....the DIS has been a great find for me and DW...

Trivia for baseball buffs, it's an easy one: We have _ days until our cruise.....who wore that number and hit three homeruns in one game(crucial game), and had a candy bar named after him.....

it will also give you baseball guys/gals an idea of where my loyalty rests.....

Hubby says it's Reggie Jackson with number 44. Something about the Reggie Bar?

I said Babe Ruth at first, but we don't have 3 days until the cruise, so I a big fat wrong!

Alright. My family has decided against the grass skirts. (Yes I know you are all extremely disappointed.) :lmao: Anyway, we've got our pirate stuff and our mardi gras beads. Who needs anything else. :) Lets gooooooooo already. I don't wanna wait (emphasis on the whining part). :) Anyway, the excitement is almost too much to handle some days. :) And, on top of it, we heard from our social worker yesterday that it will be any day now that we'll hear about our second daughter from Vietnam (like her name, birthdate, birth weight, etc.). Sooooo, the anticipation is so thick in the air at our house between this awesome cruise and the knowledge that any time now we could be "having a baby" that I just don't know if I can take it much longer. So, guess in the meantime I'll just to have occupy myself. Hmmmmm, guess the DH wouldn't appreciate me spending my time shopping huh. Heee Heee :rolleyes1 Well, that's all from here in beautiful Harrisburg, PA. Now, back to your regularly scheduled program. :rotfl: Kristi

The kid's clubs are on a schedule, they are posted in the navigator and they will also post the schedule in the club...you can check them in at anytime, you may have to walk them to where the kids are (lunch, lab, club, etc...) plus they give you a beeper, so if your child is not having fun (that has only happened once to us, they were making flubber and my son was not interested)they will beep you with a message from your child. The club is only open until midnight, they put down sleeping mats and they watch a movie until the parents come and pick them up. Some parents will put their kids in their PJ's and not check them in until 9 or 10 so they can enjoy the adult night clubs...

My DH won't do the skirt, but he did agree to a pirate costume for Pirate night. The first day there is a lifeboat drill thats mandatory at 4:00 :confused3

You are correct on the boat drill, one would think after 7 DCL cruises I would remember that...THAT'S WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE GET OLD! :confused3 :confused3 What were we talking about? Oh, grass skirt meet...we will be on deck 11 as soon as the boat drill is over:thumbsup2 It looks like we will be alone, but everyone could come by and say Hi.... We have our Piraty costumes as well.

We hope to hook up with everyone, too!:thumbsup2

We're leaving for Orlando 6 weeks from TODAY

6 weeks 2 days until Cruisapalooza!!:dance3: :dance3: :dance3:
