We are a family of six--me (Manchurianbrownbear or MBB) 44, DW (lauraljp)43, DS 17, DS 13, DD 12 and DD 9. We live in Minnesota. Most of our vacations are road trips but we have taken trips to Disney World by air.

We are both DISers and we both wanted to have a part in our trip report. Most of it is written by MBB but we will put lauraljp’s comments in red Hope it works smoothly and is not too confusing.

PRETRIP
Lauraljp—Back in the fall of 2007, MBB and I had started talking about taking another “big” vacation either another road trip or something else. We had been out West (including DL), to Niagara Falls, Disney a couple of times, Michigan, and a midwest trip. MBB thought it was time to go back to Disney again. I was not as excited at that option. Don’t get me wrong, I am as big a Disney fan as most of you but after a trip in 2000, a 2003 WDW and 3 day cruise trip and Disneyland in 2005 I wanted something different. There are still parts of the country that we have not been to and our kids are not getting any younger.

Our 2003 3 Day Wonder Cruise
004-1.jpg

Jump forward to January 2008 and still no decision had been made. It was a dreary winter day and it really made me long to be somewhere warm or at least start planning to be somewhere warm even if it was not going to be soon, something to look forward too.

MBB and I were discussing again what we wanted to do for our next vacation. He still wanted Disney. I said that I didn’t want to do the whole park thing again. We are up early every day running all day long and getting worn out. Every vacation we take is commando style and trying to get in as many sites as one can. Every day a new town! I wanted to go somewhere where we could relax and not be running all the time and still have fun. Then it hit me, the perfect solution! Did I just say relax and fun?! We could compromise--relax and see Disney. We could do a cruise again! We did a three day cruise in 2003 with four days in the parks. This time we could do the four day cruise, use the one day left on our hopper passes from 2003 and add attractions as funds allowed. Well we would not be seeing other parts of the country but it was Disney!! That has always been magical trip for us.

Next we had to decide on a date. The last two times we have gone to Disney World we have gone on October 30/31 through the first week of November. Now that our kids are older it is harder to take them out of school for so many days. We had to go when they would not miss as much school. That led us to October 12-19. In Minnesota, we have what is called MEA. Not sure what it stands for, I think it is Minnesota Educators Association, but the schools are out for Thursday and Friday of that week. This would only cause them to miss to three days of school. I hoped they could manage that.

With the dates set I started pricing everything out. We had been in connecting secret porthole rooms the last time we cruised but my parents had been travelling with us which greatly reduced our cost. We decided to go with two category 12 guaranteed cabins and take our chances. We would be happy with cat 12 since they are all located near each other. We knew we could end up in different parts of the ship if we were upgraded even to a category 11 but we were willing to take that chance to keep our costs down. We would worry about it when the time came.

We don’t do a lot of flying—only our two other Disney trips so far. Most trips are by car but with limited time we would be flying. I came to find out that airfare around this time of year in Minnesota is like holiday travel. A lot of people take trips during MEA time. Many people had prepared a lot further in advance than we had even in February and I wasn’t finding the great $200 airfare or less that I had found on our other trips.

After hearing from a lot of DISers not to expect real cheap airfare at this time a year, and seeing pretty high fares on the Northwest flights, I started waiting for Airtran to post their flights. They were running around $109 each way for September so I figured it would be the same for October. When the outgoing flights finally posted they were $130 round trip. I did not want to pay that and I could not get the return flights yet as they were not posted yet. I hemmed and hawed and ended up missing out on the one non-stop they offer to MCO it sold out at the lower fare right away and was now close to $190 one way. I was ready when the return flights finally posted and grabbed the non-stop return for 130 with joy I booked a connection for the outbound at the $130 rate and counted my blessings! About a month later the outbound went down to $89! I called and got a credit on Airtran for the difference!

Car rental—We booked a minivan (Chevy Uplander) through National in February with the infamous Visa code for around $340. We booked for 8 days since we were going to Disney after the cruise. I tried many combinations for transportation but for our family, a rental car seemed the most economical.

As issues arose with the Visa code through the spring and summer I was hoping to find a regular code for such a good rate. The rates were so high through the summer but come September I was able to switch to Alamo and got a minivan(Toyota Sienna) for $225. A great rate and a larger van! I filled out all the information online for quick checkout so there would not be a lot of issues at the airport. I have really liked using National and the Emerald Aisle but the price difference was too good to pass up.

The months went by and we cheered as each new milestone we passed…100 days…Final Payment due…Palo and Excursion booking date. We were able to get everything we wanted. We had main dining seating for one cabin but were waitlisted for the other cabin. That cleared at about the two month mark. We got our paperwork filled out online. All we were waiting for was the assignment of our cabin numbers.

It’s tortuous waiting nine months to find out your cabin numbers! Finally, at the 31 day mark, we got them. We were put in 5131 and 5133. These are category 11 cabins on deck five and they are right next to each other. We wouldn’t be at opposite ends of the ship. The downside was that they both slept 3. I sort of regretted booking three in each cabin. I was hoping we would get cabins that would sleep 4. In hindsight, I should have booked four to a cabin and two in the other to begin with. We had decided that having DH the two girls and me in one cabin and the boys in another cabin would be better. But since they were both 3 person cabins we would make it work…we had our cabins! We had been on deck 5 on our last cruise and had really liked the location. Coming up…the day of departure finally arrives!

We have more report ready so off we go...

THE TRIP
MBB--October 11 had been circled on our calendar for several months and what a thrill when it finally arrived! It was a little difficult to sleep the night before, but despite not getting a lot of rest, it wasn’t difficult to get out of bed!

My Dad arrived at our house around 9:00a.m. and we were at the airport in plenty time for our 11:00 a.m. AirTran flight out of Minneapolis/St Paul Int’l Airport. We had a connection in Atlanta and arrived in Orlando by 5:00 p.m.

Coming from Minnesota , it’s always a thrill to see palm trees. A sure indication that we’re on vacation! Everything with our flight, and picking up our Alamo rental car, which we checked out using one of the “self serve” kiosks went very smoothly. Not unhappy at all that we tried Alamo. It worked very similar to Emerald Aisle where we just went to the van aisle and picked out a van.

We stayed at the Wingate, five minutes from the airport. We got a great deal on two rooms (with six people, we normally need two rooms or a suite) $49 per room through Hotwire. They had us set up in rooms with single beds, but quickly moved us to 2-bed rooms when we requested it.

When vacationing, we always like to eat at places we don’t have in Minnesota, so thanks to our GPS we brought from home, we located a Chick Fil A and we enjoyed supper there. We got to bed pretty early Saturday night for our big day.

DEPARTURE DAY—Sunday, October 12, 2008

I was careful not to eat too much for breakfast at the Wingate; have to save room for peel and eat jumbo shrimp !

By 9:15 a.m. we were on the road, headed to Port Canaveral. It only took us about 45 minutes to get to the port and our first contact with Disney! Someone met us immediately to help with luggage. Since we were there so early, parking was no problem.

004.jpg

It’s a lot of fun roaming around cruise terminal. Again, since we were really early, it was easy to get a good look at the ship model. Really amazing detail! We got the kids signed up for clubs, got a couple character photos and even watched a couple Chip & Dale cartoons.

Steelernut and I found each other before boarding. I’d warned the DISers on our cruise thread that I’d be wearing my Minnesota Vikings hawaiian shirt and I’m pretty sure I’m the only one on the ship that wore one, so Steelernut, AKA Jeff, was able to pick me out. I’ll let you guess what kind of shirt Steelernut was wearing!

We were assigned boarding with the second group. After having our picture taken (we had people with eyes closed in both shots!) we were welcomed onto the Wonder a little before noon.

On the way into Parrot Cay we were offered the first of dozens of sanitizing wipes. This was a new innovation since the DCL cruise we took in 2003. Being a bit of a germophobe, I’m all in favor this policy.

Eating a light breakfast paid off in Parrot Cay! The shrimp are my favorite, but everything I tried was great.

Parrot Cay Buffet

Lauraljp: After lunch we took a quick dip in the kid’s pool. Part of DD9’s swimsuit did not make it from the suitcase into our carry-on bag so she was unable to swim. She was a good sport about it and enjoyed wading and eating ice cream at the pool.
014-1.jpg

When 1:00 rolled around, we explored the ship for a few minutes and located our cabins--5131 and 5133. On our last cruise we were in “secret porthole cabins”; 5022 & 5024. The portholes were nice, but the connecting rooms were even nicer. After four days of going back and forth in between cabins I’d say that given the choice of portholes or connecting rooms, I’d take the connecting rooms.

With two, 3-bed rooms, we have to decide how we’re going to divide the family. Which kids don’t get along, when do expect which kids to be going to bed, when do we expect them to be waking up…. I guess the key is to try to minimize bickering and maximize sleep.

061.jpg

DS17 and DS13 enjoying their cruise.

We (accurately) guessed that the older three kids would probably go to bed, and wake up, later than us, so they slept in a room together and DD9 slept in a cabin with DW and me.

Being a glutton for punishment, I headed to Diversions to check in on my Vikings. About a half hour of the game was all I could take so all of us except DS13 headed back to the cabins to see if our luggage had arrived. Once again, DCL doesn’t disappoint! Our luggage was in our rooms. We unpacked and then prepared for the lifeboat drill. I completely forgot about our scheduled DIS meet! Some DISer I am!

Lauraljp: I did feel there was not as much room and storage as in our previous secret porthole rooms. There was no unit at the end of the closet with drawers with a nice top for putting all our stuff on top of and no steamer trunk. We did find places for the three people in each room to put all their items but a lot was in the closet. We did use the over the door shoe organizer and really liked having everything we used frequently right where we knew it was—brushes, sunglasses, and especially toiletries. I did not miss having the split bath.
024.jpg

Our mustering station was in Animators Palate which was nice since it was very windy and it looked like rain.

DD9 and DD12 enjoying the sailaway party.

The sail away party and the deck party on our 2003 DCL cruise was moved inside because of rain, so we were really hoping for an outdoor party this time. The clouds broke just in time and we headed to deck 9 to officially kickoff the cruise.

025.jpg

We even had a rainbow!

Unfortunately, due to the humidity on deck, our video camera was having condensation issues. But, we did get several pictures!

040.jpg

I’m not sure why, but I was selected to play one of the Village People during the ”YMCA” song during the party. I think they may look for people who can’t dance! I got to be the construction worker. I knew I should have grown a mustache!

036.jpg

My kids were embarrassed, but envious that I got a lot of screen time on the Ariel Vision. I was also rewarded with a free smoothie as I left the stage. After the performance, I kind of expected that I’d be asked to appear in shows during the cruise, but I guess I wasn’t that good!

Next was our first dinner! Our schedule was Animator’s Palate, Parrot Cay, Parrot Cay and Tritons.

046.jpg

Lauraljp and DD9 and dinner at Animator’s Palette

Our serving team was Putu and Clement and they were wonderful throughout the cruise. I’m not a connoisseur of fine food, so I won’t give reviews of our meals, but I was very pleased with every meal.
When booking a cruise it’s nice to know that even if the weather is terrible, at least we’ll have several great meals!

The ship was rocking much more than I’d experienced on the two previous cruises we’d taken. I was concerned about the kids getting sea sick, but thankfully no one had any issues. Our DDs started their nightly tradition of an early exit to get to the clubs.

On our cruise five years ago the three younger kids all really enjoyed the club/lab. I hoped that would still be true now that they’re older. Before the trip DD12 was disappointed that she was not quite old enough to go in the teen club. Once she got on and went to the clubs she was happy to find other kids her age to hang out with during the cruise. DCL comes through again!

DS13 is pretty reserved, but he still enjoyed spending a lot of time in the clubs throughout the cruise. DS17 (almost 18) never really got into the clubs. On our 2003 cruise DS17 spent way too much time watching the 13” TV in our cabin. We didn’t want that to happen again. We did make him go the 411 session but he thought it was “lame.” That’s probably due more to his personality than the programming in the club.

After a quick stop at Shutters, we headed to the Golden Mickey’s. It had been five years since we had last seen the show, so we didn’t remember a lot about it. That allowed us to enjoy it all over again! DW and I went for a stroll around deck 10 after the show and were up near the sport court. The wind was crazy! We came upon a crew member who was able to tell us that the sustained wind speed was 42 mph! As far as I know, no one was blown overboard!

After our walk, we retrieved our DDs from the club. They had already made friends and didn’t appreciate having to leave. But, it was past my bed time! DW and I had to get to bed so we’d be well rested for brunch at Palo on Monday!

Great report so far. I'm very interested in hearing how your sons liked the cruise. Did they have enough to do? Were they ever bored? What activities did they most enjoy? I've been on the Wonder before with my 9 year old, who loved it, of course. But next summer, I'll be also taking my 2 oldest sons who will be 16 and 14. Thanks for posting.

We were also a little concerned about whether our sons would enjoy the cruise. They are both pretty reserved, especially around people they don't know well.

On our cruise, I didn't notice many older teens participating in the organized activities. Both our boys went to the "411" meeting the first night on the ship. DS17 was not impressed, but I'd guess that someone more outgoing might not have had the same opinion.

DS13 spent quite a bit of time in Aloft. He enjoyed the video games, and while he didn't participate in many activities (karoake, different contests & games, etc...) he really enjoyed watching. He thought the activities were cool!

DS17 is an avid reader, and I'm thankful for that, but he spent WAY more time reading in our cabin than I would have liked:rolleyes: . But, he still said he had a lot fun. He got up periodically to explore the ship. And both boys really enjoyed the food!

Hope that helps! Let me know if you have other questions!

Great TR and pics. Ur DD 9 is really cute. My 4 year old has the same hair/eyes and coloring. I hope she is as cute at 9. It is interesting to hear how kids of all ages enjoy the cruise.

Thanks MaryAz! I'll pass the compliment on to DD and pray she won't get a big head!

The cruise, and WDW, is really a different experience as the kids get older.

Great trip report and pictures........it's kinda making me home sick!
This is to funny.....we didn't meet until the last full day on board but we were so close so many times, how did I miss that Hawaiian Vikings shirt I'll never know.
Guess what? the picture of you and your family sitting in Parrot Cay for breakfast, well that table #25 was our rotation table for the 5:45 seating how close is that!!!!
Can't wait to see and read more about your trip, thanks for sharing.

Loving the trip report! We leave in about 10 days or so, and I was wondering if you had your Navigators and if there was any chance you could scan them and either post them or email them to me? This is our first cruise and I'm a planner, so I'd love to be able to see a general idea of what might be happening when from a recent trip. If not, no biggie - I'll just have to deal with the suspense of waiting for each Navigator!

Edited to add - Oops, I found them online somewhere else. Sorry to bother you! But I can't wait for more of your report! I got teary eyed reading the beginning this morning!!

Hey Bob,
Thanks for reading!
We enjoyed that Parrot Cay table. It's nice to be able to look out the window.
I'm definitely homesick. I thought of you and Renysmom this morning. I was walking the dog. The temperature was in the mid 20's and I was thinking, "two weeks ago right now I was pulling into Castaway Cay..."

Hey Melissa,

I'm glad you found them, because we didn't keep all of our Navigators!

Boy, I remember when we were 10 days away from our cruise. It sure beats being 18 days PAST the cruise!

You'll have a blast!

I missed everyone except Kimiza! The cruise was still fabulous though! DS(12) spent 12 hours in the lab on one evening, he had a fabulous time! DD(13) also did the Castaway Cay Aloft excursion. I do agree that my oldest DD(18) spent way too much time in the room reading/watching tv.

I don't know how I missed that lovely shirt either, but I know nothing about American football.

How neat! I saw your DD9 a couple of times around the Mickey pool area while we were on the ship. I remembered thinking her hair cut was adorable. :)

Monday 10/13
Monday was our “Sea Day.”

DW and I had 10:00 reservation for brunch at Palo. Other than brunch, we didn’t really have a plan for this day.

The sun was out when I woke up a little before 7:00. Since we had inside cabins, I didn’t that until I got down to deck 4 for a quick run.

There are bottlenecks on either end of the deck 4 running/walking track, but it’s still fun to do a couple miles because the scenery is nothing like what I get at home in Minnesota!

We let the kids sleep in; they were all up past midnight the night before. Both DSs claimed that they had not enjoyed 411. DS13 planned to go back, but DS17 did not. From what I saw throughout the week, there were far more younger teens than older teens at Aloft, so I didn’t blame DS17, also referred to as “Stick in the Mud” by DW, for not wanting to hang out there.

The boys decided to skip breakfast and I took the girls to Beach Blanket Buffet. I was sorely tempted by the buffet, but I was able to resist knowing that Palo awaited! The girls went to the clubs and DW and I headed to Palo. Our 2003 cruise was only three days and we didn’t squeeze in Palo, so I guess we had been waiting five years for this!

We haven’t just rolled off the turnip truck, but I would call us sophisticated diners either, so I don’t know that I can give a decent review. I can say that I enjoyed everything I tried. I really enjoyed many things! There were a lot of appetizers that were new to me. For entrees, I had the frittata and DW had one of the pizzas. They were both excellent. If I had to pick a highlight, I think I would have to say it was the sticky caramel rolls. I was determined to try a lot of new things, so I only took one caramel roll, but it was great! Our server, Roy, did a wonderful job serving and educating us throughout the morning.

054.jpg

Lauraljp: AT 10:00 a.m. I was definitely not ready for all the choices offered at Palo. Some of it just did not appeal to me so early(?) in the morning. Once I started out with the delicious pastries and breakfast items I was able to work myself up to the pizza. I don't know if I was still full from the night before or if the rocking of the ship was affecting me, but on the tour of the buffet some items just made me feel queasy looking at them. That soon went away, fortunately!

MBB: I have really enjoyed seeing great pictures of the food in other DISers trip reports, but I have to apologize for not getting food pictures just us enjoying our meal!

During brunch, clouds had rolled in and it was still very windy, so ruled out spending time at the pool. We explored the ship for awhile, did a little browsing in Mickey’s Mates and Treasure Ketch.

DD12 had made friends and they were roaming the ship. DS13 had wandered off somewhere. He’s very good at slipping away quietly without letting us know where he’s going. Throughout the cruise he could usually be found in Aloft.

Unfortunately, DS17 could always be found in his cabin. He is a great reader. The downside of that is that he was perfectly satisfied to sit on the sofa in an inside cabin (no windows!) and read. I’m not sure why he wouldn’t go upon deck and read!

DW and I picked up DD9 and got her pizza at Pinocchio’s. I think the girls lived on pizza. They had it for lunch both days we were on the ship and at least one dinner. All that variety of food and they choose pizza??

The clouds, wind and occasional light rain limited our outdoor activity, but we did get to enjoy a galley tour. Providing all that great food for nearly 3,000 passengers and crew is done very efficiently and with a lot of hard work by a lot of people.

056.jpg

After the tour, I found a deck chair on deck 4 to read and doze for awhile before Formal Night dinner at Parrot Cay. The intermittent rain did not deter DD9. She was happy to go for a swim for a little while before dinner.

DW and DD saw them braiding hair near the Cove Cafe and made an appointment for the next day to get a hair wrap for DD9.

We planned to have “Lifestyle” photos done before dinner. However, we had turned in a couple of our dress shirts to be pressed and they hadn’t come back by 4:00. This created a little tension, but within 15 minutes of when we had to leave, the shirts arrived and we were able to have our pictures taken in our dressy attire.

We can’t get everyone dressed up and together like this very often.

It’s hard to be formal in Parrot Cay! It’s such a relaxed atmosphere. It’s interesting to see how differently people dress at formal night. Some are really dressed up. Some don’t look any different than any other night.

On our 2003 cruise, I’d worn a jacket and tie. DW talked into leaving the jacket at home this year. I hope we didn’t offend anyone!

This was Toy Story, The Musical night. We were probably looking forward to this show more than the others because we hadn’t seen it and we’re big Toy Story fans.

DS9 was off to the club and the rest of us went to TS,TM. There were some technical difficulties and the show was delayed a little bit. The issue had to do with the sound but they rebooted something at it was up and going. Bo Peep had a few off and on sound issues but otherwise it went smoothly after that. It didn’t disappoint. Great sets. Great costumes. The actors were great. And, I was happy that it lured DS17 out of the room! The story is the same as the original Toy Story movie, but there are a couple of original songs and some original dialogue mixed in.

After TS,TM we decided to test our Disney knowledge at Mickey Mania (with Shaka from Wales and Martin) in Studio Sea. It would have been fun to be chosen as a contestant, but I have to admit that at least of a couple of those who were chosen put my Disney knowledge to shame. What are Chip and Dale called in Japan? Tick and Tock! Who knew?!?! Oh well, I was chosen to be one of the Village People. You can’t expect to be on stage the whole cruise!

It was a good day to enjoy and explore the ship, but it was sad to see another day end. Coming up next…Nassau!

Hey Cathy,
I wish we could have met everyone from our 10/12 cruise thread! It sounds like we had a lot of similar experiences. I hope you had as much fun as we did!
I'm tempted to pitch my lovely shirt, because like you, the coach of my favorite team doesn't seem to know anything about American football!

Wow the Lifestyle portraits came out great, you have a very beautiful family.
I was watching the Disney photographers from the balcony while most of the pictures were being taken, I probably saw you and never knew it.
My wife took the galley tour also......so close but yet so far, that is funny.

I'm enjoying the trip report!! I like how you both are posting! Great pictures also! Can't wait to read more!:surfweb:

Hey Bob,
I thought the same thing! If we all had DIS tatooed on our foreheads we would have realized that we couldn't take 10 steps without running into one of us!
Thanks for the kind words about my family! I'm very blessed. It's amazing they haven't voted me out yet!

I was so enjoying reading about your cruise, because it was our cruise, too! There were 8 of us, from Utah. We even stayed at the Wyngate on Sat. night, but we didn't leave until about 10 in a *********** van. (Maybe we ate breakfast together?) but, wait, it gets better--we were on the galley tour with you! The only reason I know is my 29 year old son is in your galley tour picture, as in the red plaid shirt sleeve of my husband! Wow, it is a small world, after all! Can't wait to see more of your pictures, maybe we are in some more. . . .
