Oct 30 2010 7 Night Western (PART 2)

Somebody send me some courage, some peace. I'm in the midst of planning our Sept long weekend trip to take our DS17 off to College. The Car rental is reserved, I'm just about to pin down our Hotel after the first 10 hour stretch.
My concern is night time driving through Northern Ontario. I've never been up in this area except for Algonquin Park as a child. Algonquin park is a Huge Wilderness Provincial park. From what I can tell by the map, this drive is mostly through Country, Wilderness, Boonies, whatever you want to call it, very few city centers.
We'll be driving along the Northern edge of Georgian Bay/Lake Huron and then from the Eastern Edge of Lake Superior all the way around to the North Western Edge. I'm not looking forward to this drive, not at all. DH says we can just put him on a bus, but I know DS is nervous too, so NO, we have to take him. I'm worried about deer and moose on the roads especially at night, yet we can't avoid some night late evening driving. I'll be glad once we make it back, I just hope we make it back in one piece. I'm probably worrying about this way too much. The one thing I look forward to is the Parents night on the Saturday night at 6pm. And if all goes well, we'll have just arrived the hour or two before that.
Once this is out of the way, I can concentrate on the drive later this fall, and THAT one I am Truley LOOKING Forward to! :)

Take a big gulp and know that it will all be okay in the end. Those family hours in the car will be a precious time as your son transitions to a new phase in his life journey. And you have every right to worry as that's what moms do best!

So glad some of you want to start this program with me!! I am about to get ready for work so when I get home in the am I will put a link to the program.

Sending you lots of :wizard::wizard::wizard::wizard::wizard:. I agree that your nervousness about the drive is going to be wound up in the emotion of your DS going away to college, and you have every right to get emotional about it all. I am sure all us Moms here can empathise 100%. It will be absolutely fine you'll see, and you know you have lots of thoughts and best wishes here to get you through

I'm interested! I've been wanting to get out and do more walking, start running. I currently can't even run to the end of my block! Last month we walked with the kids to the local splash pad park, a good 25 minute walk. But with kids in tow, a wagon and stroller, you walk slow. On the way home, I had to climb a huge hill. Pushing the stroller up that path, it was quite steep, easy to go down but a great deal of exercise to get up. When I reached the top of that hill, I was out of breath, my heart was pounding to the point I could Feel it and hear it, and I felt dizzy. I had to sit down for a bit. THAT told me I am SO out of shape.
Motivation, thats what I need to do something on a regular basis, and I think what you are planning IS motivation! Count me in! Now having NEVER done an exercise progam before, What do you do to warm up and cool down? :)

Hi, so glad you are going to join me!! :cool1: To answer your question, for me a warm up and a cool down are just walking at a slower pace. I am doing this on a treadmill, so for warm up I start about 1.8 and move up to 2.5 or so during the 5 min. For cool down I just do the opposite, slowly decreasing my speed til I am strolling.

OK, as promised I am getting you guys the info to start the Couch to 5K program!

Here is the web site: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

Like I said yesterday, it is about 30 min of work out time to be done no more than 3 times a week. You should always skip a day between walk/run work out days and always strech prior to hitting the road or treadmill. If you are not used to streching, there is a link called "stay loose" on the coolrunning C25K (abreviation for Couch to 5K) web site. It takes me about an hour from start to finish, between streching, workout and streching again.

For anyone with an I-pod Touch or I-phone there is a GREAT app called C25k that is lime green (there are several), so look for the lime green logo if you want to purchase the app. The nice thing about the app is you pick your music and it tells you when to jog and when to walk. For work outs outdoors, it is very valuable not having to try to look at a stopwatch of some type to know when your interval has changed. If you have access to a treadmill, the program will be easier on it, but I have done it both ways. I plan to do the treadmill til October, then try to get outside some in October so I am used to running on pavement by our cruise!!

OK, I am sooooo excited to do this, and very excited to have you guys to keep me motivated!!:cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

Thanks everyone for the kind words!! Yes, the emotions are definately going up and down.

Kim, he is goiing to attend Confederation College and a friend of his is attending Lake Head University just a few blocks away from the College. So at least he will know ONE person in town! He will be studying Culinary Management. He dreams of being a chef or Manage the Chefs on board a cruise Ship some day!! And if not that, then the opportunity to travel the world as a Chef. :) It may come to pass, it may not, but he'll at least learn some skills worth having!

My DD wants to be a chef too. Or a dance teacher. Or both. She's only 10, so she's got time to decide.

Good luck to you, Judy. I'm not looking forward to that day... :sad1:

This sounds Great! I'm going to start tonight after dinner (not immediately after). The weather is great so I may as well start now! In the evenings right now too, it won't be so hot outside. I don't have a treadmill, so this will actually be done out on the road. Perhaps I'll take the dog with me! Thanks for that IPOD app heads up! THat sounds like this would be much easier than looking at my watch the whole time! I'll definately check that out!

We leave in exactly 11 weeks and 2 days for FL, and this exercise regimen is 9 weeks. I vow to do my best to keep it up, after the 9 weeks and since there is a running track on board, then on board as well! :)

I've been so busy for the past couple weeks with new job!!! I'm totally lost; who was I chatting with about Palo brunch???

Uggh.. Palo Brunch. My wife and I were in Disney World for our 15 year anniversary when our 90 day window to book Palo came up. We totally forgot to log in that night to make our brunch reservations and now are hoping to catch a cancellation at just the right time or book on board. We LOVE the brunch and can't believe we spaced out like that on our booking window. :sad2:

Don't feel too badly....we were able to book at 90 days too. I was online at 12:01 a.m., had all kinds of problems getting in to the system (I think many of us did) and there was not a brunch or tea reservation to be had! So, even if you had been able to log in from WDW, you still might have found yourself locked out at that time.

I will keep trying, but also plan on trying to getting a ressie on board if we can. Otherwise, I guess the experience will have to wait until our next cruise!

Well, I didn't get out running last night. We have family visiting from Southern Ontario that we haven't seen in a while. BUT I did get that IPOD APP downloaded!! That is going to be SO helpful for this endevour! So I'm going to try for tomorrow, and if that doesn't pan out, then definately Monday! I'm thinking Monday's Wednesdays and Fridays will work out better for me time wise anyway. :)

Sounds great, a chef, wow!!! They grow up so quick!!

Is Martyn feeling better now?

Hi everyone! Hope you are all having a fantastic weekend!

Just a quick update- about half of the lanyard participants have already paid (thank you!), and another handful I am awaiting on check currently in the mail.

We only have three more weeks that I can accept payments before I have to make the order. I will send out a last-chance reminder when we are 10 days out from the deadline. :)

I will be doing some brainstorming on the ToT. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions on that, let us know!

I had to take my laptop in for repair yesterday (dropped it), so hopefully I will get a lot of cruise prep work done while I don't have the internet to distract me (as much, anyway..since we now only have one computer to share!) ;)

Hi Jen,

I don't know if you included us in the lanyards as we were pretty late to sign up, but I haven't received any message from you? I am sorry if you thought we just hadn't paid. If it is not too late, could you pm me the details for payment? Thank you so much :)

Thanks for the reminder. I had read the PM but was at work (and since they record key strokes I don't like to use credit card info there), and then promptly forgot about sending the money when I got home.
