Oct 30 2010 7 Night Western (PART 2)

Have you all seen the post on the main board as of this morning about a rescue at sea early this morning?

"Disney Magic rescues 18 lost at sea!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm onboard the Magic right now and Captian John came on at about noon today and announced that at 3:45am this morning, the Magic rec'd a SOS call stating that a nearby ship heard screams in the water. The ship then commenced rescue operations and found 18 Algierians who had been lost at sea for 4-5 days. They are onboard now and are recieving food and water and healthcare. WOW! "

I just saw that! Amazing! And how life can go from the lowest of the low to pretty much up there when you are lost at sea, and the Disney Magic turns up to save you. That is pixie dust by the cruise liner load! I know it must have been awful and terrifying experience though, I don't mean to sound light hearted about it, but you think of all those yucky cargo ships out there....I hope they are all ok now :goodvibes

We did, but the company got us signed up foa a "day pass" ata nearby hotel. Seems like a good deal. Beach, 2 pools food and drink. Limit 30 people.

Would you mind if I link these to our magnet section?

Of course not! Please feel free. I made them to share. The DIS member on board one has been around since around 2006/2007 so there are probably a lot of DIS folks out there with it by now.

If anyone needs help putting together images for magnets or T-shirts, I'd be happy to help. A few years back I used to help out at the Dis Designs forum (back when it was first starting up) but I've been away from that area so long I don't even know if it is still going or not.

Those are our favorites too!!! The homemade fries at Raglan Pub are amazing!

We have had great luck at Planet Hollywood. Even thinking about stopping by DTD and having lunch on the way to the port! Thanks for the idea.

Sorry to hear you can't join us at Nachi :sad1:but glad to hear you found another great deal!!!;)

Hello All, Finally starting to get ready
Wow, been awhile since I posted, have had a busy summer so far.. Paid off the trip in full now the girls are counting down. I think its the first time they actually are looking forward to going back to school. They know once the get back in school it will only be about 7 weeks until we leave.

I want to thank everyone here, I learned much more on this thread then any other and boy have I researched. Since it will be our first cruise I want to make it special for the wife and girls. Girls have been going out buying outfits and dresses for dinner, wifey starting finally shopping for herself.. Me well I will be last minute shopper.. Been watching my weight down 40 lbs wanna drop another 20-30 more before the cruise so I will shop at the last minute and drive her nuts..

I m jealous you lost weight!hahah. I gained all mine back from working 60hour weeks :scared1:. When you drive for a living and work long hours, its so easy to just dive into a location to eat popcorn:: and then keep moving. That being said, I hope to lose about 30lbs be the trip.. if work will stop using me soon.

I also agree with Fultons (but I LOVE seafood). One thing to keep in mind, you can make an ADR still and it would probably work out pretty good. Check the menus and see what your taste may be, then enjoy. :)

I know what you mean about work using you, mine does too... But bringing a lunch (healthy) not only helps but boy I can save more money for the trip!!!!

I luv Seafood but I am the only one in my group, where can I look up a menu for it...

I dont' think that ridiculous. Would I have names on shirts or badges in WDW, no. But on the cruise ship I do feel more confident, and figure I'm always speaking their names in public anyway.
Each parent has their own level of comfortableness with this, and there's nothing wrong with doing it or not doing it. So I say, don't base your decision on what others are doing, go with what you are comfortable with :)

The peer pressure will get to me! Nah, I know that it's my choice. And I know that I didn't have to explain myself, but I wanted to.

That made me giggle:rotfl:! Although I do know exactly what you mean about identifying the child themself with some kind of name tag attached to them.

Regardless of where or when, I don't want to make it easy on anyone to call my kid over for any sort of unsavory reason.

You just don't know.

I personally hope to see Dis names on most of the lanyards' inserts as that is mostly how I know you all (by your Dis name). :goodvibes

I'm so sorry, I really hope you don't think I was laughing at that part of your post :guilty: I was just tickled by your comment that you didn't want anyone knowing your dd's name, and then referring to the irony of your board name! I completely agree with you as to the identification of children, it is a horrible world, and we are very careful particularly with our 2yro who would chat to anyone. DD10 is old and sensible enough to understand the world. I'm not sure what to do about the lanyard names - as Judy says, it is a little different being on the ship than in the parks. I will have a think about that one.

Jen,
Ron's point is well taken. Feel free to go ahead and put my Dis name on my lanyard insert. Good luck keeping all of our requests straight! We all owe you a huge thank you for doing the lanyards.

I am also hoping that most adults will opt for Dis Name and real name - it is so hard to match/learn names and any help is a good thing! (I'm very, very bad at putting names to faces!)

My DH won't wear a lanyard, so I am only getting them for me and DS11 - My name is Pamela and DS is Darrah. Since his name is odd, most people pronounce it wrong and at 11 he is old enough to know better than to just walk up to someone he doesn't know. I certainly understand the concern with young children who don't understand that yet!

I have spent years now teaching him about being safe. When he was still an infant I saw a show (I think it may have been Oprah during my maternity leave) where they were talking about the problem that kids don't understand what we mean when we say "stranger". They showed studies and examples where they showed kids photos or even did it with live people. The kids understood that family and people they knew well were not strangers, but they also said that the mailman, UPS guy, the cashier at the local store, etc were not strangers. Even worse, most of them also would say that a well dressed, nice looking person they had never seen before was NOT a stranger. In their minds "strangers" were like monsters and only people they didn't know who looked a little scary (ie messy clothes, long, messy hair, maybe tattoos) fit the description. There was also discussion that if your child is taught to be afraid of ALL people they don't know well and then gets lost in a store or something, they have no idea what to do. Is it OK to ask for help? Who should they ask? etc. I have worked with my son more with the idea of watching out for people who act oddly - if the milkman says hi as he is walking back to his truck, it is OK to say hi back. If the milkman shows up in a regular car on the weekend and wants you to come talk to him -run!

Just one more thought on the DIS name/real name thing. Although we all get to know each other by our DIS names - most of the them are really, really, REALLY weird to use in person :) A couple months ago I went to a meet up with some other internet friends (not DIS, we're fans of a musician and met at a concert) and it was only for a single day. We decided to not bother to learn real names and just use our "board' names for the day. It was almost surreal trying to call people by the names they used online! (I was relatively lucky as I just use my initials there, so not as strange as some of the others. :lmao:) However, if we had tried to use "real" names, none of us would have known who the others were since the board names are what we know. Over the course of a cruise it is easier to learn the real name that goes with the board name - but I can use all the help I can get, so nametags are GREAT :thumbsup2

Oh gosh no! I knew it was the irony! I didn't think you were laughing AT me, but at the irony of my saying that ;) No worries whatsoever.

Phew, I was worried I had offended you . It's the problem of the written word, and the inability to see or hear the person you are speaking to as usual :goodvibes

Tone is impossible to read. I apologize if I made you feel badly. I'm really very easy-going :)

As the parents of a single - who went through a lot to have her - we're the first ones to admit that we are overprotective. I think it's for good reason (especially after reading The Lovely Bones last week).

I totally understand, I have read that too. We are not helped by the fact both DH and I work in criminal law, so we see a lot of the bad side of life :sad2: Once you are aware of the kind of things that go on this world, you become very protective. It's a hard balance between letting children enjoy their innocence and protecting them from the dangers that are sadly around all of us.

I was on this cruise in 2008!! We didn't get rain, but the wind & waves were crazy!! Every one of our excursions were cancelled! We were scheduled for Grand Cayman but they couldn't tender, so they switched that day to "at sea" and made the next day, Thursday (which was originally an at sea day) - Key West! I'm not sure if those plans than switched "DCL TOT" or not (as we weren't participating). Just in case I have now made some of you worry about possible conditions, we still had a very MAGICAL vacation - and obviously - rebooked the same week again!

Aaah..OK! I was wondering why that seemed so strange! :goodvibes That was only a few weeks after our last Magic cruise (also a DD) so I was familiar with that itinerary. :thumbsup2

I LOVE THESE!! Thanks for "finally" letting Linda and I get them too!! hehehe
:rotfl: Yeah, right after I say how good I am keeping track of things...LOL! :rotfl2: ((I'm so sorry!))

In 2008, at dinner, each restaurant had a Halloween Display as you first walked in. I'm thinking it was Disney carved pumpkins and such . . . but there was also mounds and mounds of candy! Perhaps, you want to bring goody bags for your kids and let them know ahead of time how many pieces they can each take - it also might be a good alternate plan if the two TOT events do not work for your plans . . .

I also remember that when we were leaving after dinner, there was very very little candy left - so - I would reccomend letting them make their choices before dinner. . . however. . . I am traveling without children. . . :thumbsup2

Oooh that's a great tip! Thanks!! Hope they still do that, what a neat idea!

I realize how ridiculous this sounds coming from someone who's screen name is "MorgansMom," but I meant I don't usually put her name on things she wears or carries, like backpacks, etc. ;)

Not ridiculous at all! :thumbsup2

I do have a quick inquiry, we are flying in to Orlando from JFK NY ( Prices from Newark were double the price... I think they know all the NJ Kids are off from school the first week in November) on Friday the 29th and staying at Port Orleans Riverside. We will not be going in the parks - too much in one day for the little one - but we will be taking a bus to epcot then the Monorail to WDW just for her to see the castle. I want to go to Downtown Disney for Dinner any recommendations... There will be 6 adults and 1 2year old...BTW the babies Godparents booked and are going with us, nice surprise...

Well let me know of a nice place to eat in Downtown Disney..

Hi sarge, good to see you on again!:goodvibes Sounds like great plans. As far as restaurants in DTD we have mostly eaten at T-Rex and Earl of Sandwich when we are there. I would love to try Raglan Road one day, have heard the food is great!!! No matter where you eat though, dessert at Ghiardelli is a must do! Or at least a hot chocolate! :)

I know most folks probably know this little tidbit, but the store portion of Ghiardelli's offers a free chocolate square sample just for going inside! :thumbsup2

We did, but the company got us signed up foa a "day pass" ata nearby hotel. Seems like a good deal. Beach, 2 pools food and drink. Limit 30 people.

Sorry you did not get Nachi but that sounds like a nice deal. Limit of 30 people will be nice since that is a very busy day in port!!! :)

If anyone needs help putting together images for magnets or T-shirts, I'd be happy to help. A few years back I used to help out at the Dis Designs forum (back when it was first starting up) but I've been away from that area so long I don't even know if it is still going or not.

A-ha! I knew I knew your username from somewhere! :rotfl: I am a dis-ign freak! Sure enough I looked in my bookmarks (I have one titled "Dis Buckets" and I have your photobucket there! ;) Judy's too, of course! :goodvibes

I personally hope to see Dis names on most of the lanyards' inserts as that is mostly how I know you all (by your Dis name). :goodvibes

^ yeah this does help a lot. I'm not the best with names, although I think being the one keeping track of the info, making the tags, and being the one to pass them out on the boat will help me put the names to the faces this time around!

That having been said, these are YOUR lanyards and I am happy to personalize them how YOU want. :thumbsup2

OK everyone, as much as I would hate to disappoint anyone, I will have to put a strict limit on the Lanyard Signup.

I will be able to accept signups and quantity changes until

SUNDAY AUGUST 8

This is necessary to allow everyone a reasonable amount of time to get payment to me and yet still give me enough time to be able to create the tags and assemble the lanyards.

We have soared from participation in the 60's to well over 100 in just a few short weeks, which is wonderful, but will also require a greater amount of preparation time.

It also means we will no longer have an excess of lanyards.

This weekend participants will receive a CONFIRMATION PM from me. If you want to participate you MUST return this PM to me and confirm you will be able to participate. Failure to do so may result in removal from the participation list!

After I receive the confirmation PM's back I will begin the process of sending out invoices with amount due and payment information. I will allow what should be ample opportunity to receive payment, but there will be a strict deadline for that as well. I will need to receive all payments by

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 5

This is very important as I will need to make sure I have enough time to make and receive the order, then create and assemble the tags. Nearly doubling the quantity over the past few weeks has made these time constraints more difficult, so it will be necessary for me to stick to these dates!

I am very accommodating and will try to do all I can to assist everyone in this procedure but it will be necessary to hold to some strict guidelines to ensure things run smoothly. I hope you all understand and as always I sincerely appreciate your support and assistance.

Please, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions! I am on the boards daily (usually multiple times daily). You can also email me nenner1 at yahoo dotcom.

Thank you all so much for your participation, support, and assistance in this matter. I hope you all will love your lanyards!

:) Jen
