Oceaneer vs Edge

Taking my 11 year old on his first DCL cruise and he is in the age group for both Oceaneer Club and Edge. Does he get to go to both? Or do I have to choose the one he will utilize?

He will be eligible for both the Oceaneers Club/Lab and the Edge. He can go to both. I would recommend he attend the Edge the first night as that's when kids get to know each other.

The Vibe is for ages 14-17.

He doesn't know we're going on this one. Can't wait for him to experience DCL!

The Dream has the Millineum Falcon in Oceaneer Club. He might want to check that out too. And Edge is pretty fun.
My son is now out of the Oceaneer age group and is kind of bummed out that he won't be able to hang out in the Falcon. Well, except at Open House times anyway.

My granddaughters are both Edge age group. Will have to make sure they get into Oceaneers club as well

My twelve year old son had dreamed of going to the Avengers area of the Magic (Oceaneers). We pre-registered him for it and he began our cruise there. On our second day, he went to the Edge. He made friends quickly. For the rest of the cruise, he attended select events (of his choosing) with his sisters in kids' club and then would check himself out and head to Edge. He always finished the evenings (after late seating) in Edge. He carried the wave phone to check in with us. He really enjoyed having the freedom to enjoy both.

Did the Wave phone work well for you? We took radios (walkie-talkies) on our last Carnival cruise and that worked well enough but the Wave phone would be a simpler option. I've heard good and bad about them so I'm just not sure how helpful they are.

My son is definitely very into the electronic gaming so I see him spending a fair amount of time at Edge. I think he will be WOWed by the look and feel of the Oceaneers Club/Lab though.

SO excited about this trip. It's a last minute one for us to celebrate my birthday and me getting the cancer free diagnosis. We're actually going to send the kiddo to school on the day we leave and pick him up a couple hours later and THEN tell him what we are doing.

We haven't given our kids a wave phone. We just have them call us using the house phones whenever they change locations. That way if we need them, we can just go get them wherever they are. But I've only had to do that once, when it was late and I wanted to go to bed. My daughter was up in Cabanas making pizza, so I just ran up and brought her back with me. She was only 10, so I didn't want her wandering the ship alone that late.

Just in case anyone was wondering... the Wave phones worked great on our cruise... except for when they didn't. At two points during the cruise my Wave phone would not call or text. No rhyme or reason why as it has been working 20 minutes earlier. I would reboot the phone and then it would work again. His Wave phone would show missed calls sometimes but never vibrated to notify him calls were coming through.

Kiddo (11.5 yo) did a great job of keeping ahold of the Wave phone during the trip and responding when I would reach out to him. He even learned old style texting (wow I forgot how slow that was) so he could send me messages that way too.

He only went to the Oceaneers Club/Lab once. Nothing there held his interest. He spent the majority of his time in Edge.

From his perspective, he preferred the Kids Club on Carnival. They had a bunch of PS4 consoles and they were linked together so the kids could play games together (like racing games) - not just the standard 1 or 2 player game.

We have not had great success with the wave phones. We've done much better using the dcl app on our iPhones/iPods.

I did take one of my old phones to try to use the app with him but my old phone just couldn't handle it. Kiddo does not have a phone, iPod, or anything of that nature because he is a forgetful 11 yo boy. Hubby and I had the app running on our phones and could contact each other if needed (but we were usually together).

I was really frustrated with the Wave phone the first time it did its non-connecting thing as we were on the deck for one of the parties and I was trying to call the kiddo to tell him where to meet us. I was about ready to whip that Wave phone into the ocean when I repeatedly was not able to connect a call or text him.

On the app, hubby and I did have some times where texts were delayed by 20 minutes or more.

Most 11 year olds prefer being with kids their own age so I'm guessing the Edge would be a better fit for him.
