We are booked in an ocean view with a porthole on the Fantasy.
If I was to switch to a balcony would I pay the difference for today’s balcony price or when I booked?
Example-
We paid 5500 for ocean view
Balcony was around 6800 when we booked
Now it’s 7800

When you book a cruise, the pricing is locked in for that sailing for you. Any change in stateroom category would be at the prices on the day you booked.

If you upgrade now you'll have to pay 7,800. If you wait it could be more. Price will be based on price the day you book.

This is incorrect. Assuming OP isn’t changing cruise dates, just upgrading the stateroom - the prices are locked in as of the original booking date. The verandah will cost $6800, minus whatever has already been paid towards the oceanview.

Enjoy your cruise!

I tried to change categories on my cruise and was told I had to pay the current prices, and there is no such thing as 'locked in rates' from your booking date unless it's in the same category. This was confirmed over and over again as I tried at least 4 different times with different reps. :confused3

I changed categories on my recent cruise and I paid the price as it would have been on the day I booked (even though that category wasn't available when I booked).

That's not what happened to us. We upgraded our past Nov cruise from balcony to 1 BR Concierge and we paid price on the day we upgraded, not what it was on the day we originally booked.

We booked a cruise in January this year, and in February upgraded from ocean view to balcony. The price we paid for the balcony was the price as of the January original booking date. We did not pay the prices at the time we changed category--I know because those were considerably higher. I could see it side by side: when I ran a search on the website, the same balcony room was several hundred dollars more expensive than when I logged into my account and use the "change stateroom" link.
