Occupy Wall Street

i am interested in what it is that you are pointing out. please clarify :cutie:

This thread will not end well.

But I think it will be fun to watch. popcorn::

What I'm struck by is that it proves that there is nothing new under the sun.

Those photos could've come from any one of several eras and any one of any number of protests in US history. The protest iteself is one that's occurred before and will be reenacted again.

Of course, before we had photography there would've only been drawings in the mass communications of the day. And before message boards, people just had to spew hatred while gathered face to face.

But other than better technology, there's nothing new.

Just thinking that in this day and age you would think they wouldn't be pepper spraying peaceful demonstrators. Goes to show that the more some things change, the more they stay the same.

At least they didn't taser granny, well not yet anyway.

I have been following this... i am sure we can''t really discuss it here, but it is very disturbing. (ETA I am disturbed by thetreatment of the protestors.. I support them and their right to protest)

I am also disturbed that they have been seizing cameras etc. and arresting photographers....:sad2:

oh...i see.
America is a great country filled to the brim with good hardworking people, but little by little people matter less.
banks and corporations make the rules we live by and they rule over everything. we are letting it happen. we are too happy, too sad, too distracted, too busy, too lazy, too blissfully unaware to care or even notice.
the country needs a good shake up, a revolution, to put a fatal dent in corruption and greed that has become an acceptable and tolerated characteristic of leadership, politics and megacorporations.

maybe another country will come along and spend billions to save and rebuild America? or maybe we can save ourselves?
maybe it will only amount to a few hundred youtube videos of people who tried to make a change or maybe we will witness a great American leader who will go down in history?

maybe i am just tired and cranky. anyway, good for people who do something besides watch America go down the crapper.

These people are protesting the right thing- the banking system - but they have no idea why they should be protesting it. They are tools, being used...

I admire that they are protesting a concept but what concrete things do they want to see exactly? Where are they going with this?

They need organization and leadership - and I hope they get it.

I'm tired and cranky too, and I think a lot of people are. We're sick of watching the same thing happen year after year after year. The working and middle classes have been losing income for almost 20 years now while a tiny, tiny fraction of the country has been getting richer and richer. It's not just one President, not just one political party. It's greed and a lust for power on the part of MANY people over the years that has brought us to where we are today.

We want to work hard, but we also want to be paid fairly and treated well.
Sure, everyone talks about winning the "set you up for life, never have to work again" lottery, but honestly most people just want a nice house, decent education for their kids, health care that won't bankrupt them, maybe a new car every few years and a nice vacation once in a while. We don't want to live in fear anymore.

I'm with these folks. I hope it remains peaceful, and I hope their rights are respected.

Unfortunately their rights aren't being respected. They are being peppersprayed by police and the police seem to think it's pretty darned funny, according to the forum listed in the first post.

Disgusting. To protect and serve my ***. It's sad how many bullies go into the police force. Makes it tougher for "real" policemen to do their job and get the respect they deserve. Those officers should be ashamed of themselves, but they aren't, they just keep laughing.

Also, cautionary tale, what you write on the internet is not as private as you might hope. :D

AH, I see they pulled the thread. BAHAHAhahahahaa...darn I wish I'd thought to get a screen shot first. If I find it again, I'll take one and post it. It was very interesting to see all those officers laughing at the people sprayed and how they talked about "us". Very interesting indeed.

My concern is that there is so much police presence in the Wall Street area that the rest of the City is being left wide up to another terrorist attack. I will admit I haven't been following these events too closely, other than having to walk past the protesters every and seeing the amount of traffic the protests are causing, street closings, etc. It has been making it very difficult to get around. I'm not really sure what it is they want to happen with signs like "Turn off your TV" and "Don't Buy What You Don't Need". :confused3 As far as being peaceful protesters, I wonder how peaceful they will be when asked to leave Zucatti Park. It is, after all, private property. :confused3

Of course the reality is these people had a permit to protest at a particular place, they decided that they wanted to cause economic harm to people in the city so they left the area they had been allowed to set up the protest in and moved into the streets in an attempt to shut down or hamper the evil Wall Street workers.... would you feel good if a bunch of lazy bums decided to block the road and entrance to your place of employ or your husbands? Basically taking money from you pocket book in the process.

Frankly I think they were to soft on those idiots, they needed to pull out some clubs and crack open some heads... then the next time these loons decided to cause problems for people they would think twice.

What you improperly state is that they were "peaceful demonstrators"... that can only be true if the demonstrators are causing no harm to anyone... while these idiots weren't openly hitting anyone or tossing rocks, they were impeding the movement of people... what if a surgeon was late for an operation because these idiots were blocking traffic and your mother died on the operating table because of it? What if your family was gunned down in a home invasion because the police that could have been responding to your emergency were too busy trying to deal with the morons in the street? The term "peaceful demonstration" is usually misapplied and only applies when the demonstration does not interfere with the normal business of the day.
