occupied room

Just read through this whole thread and didn't see anyone saying they would demand compensation if this happened to them, not even the OP. Maybe I missed it? :confused3

Anyway, OP I'm glad you posted this! I think we'll open our room door a little more cautiously now when we first check in . And we will always have the door bolted when we're inside!

YES. This is pretty much why I posted. I had never heard it happen before and thought you all should be aware! :flower3:

Shows why it's not a good idea to leave a laptop or other electronics sitting out.

Good point! The next time someone posts asking what they should do with their computer when they are at WDW we should all remind them of this happening. I still shudder when people say they just leave their stuff out, all over the room.

In January at CBR we were walking to our rooms and there were two maids outside our door argueing and wouldn't let us in the room. One called bell services for us and they came and picked up our luggage and escorted us back to the front desk. We had no idea what was going on. My original thought was that someone had got sick in the room. The CM at the counter told us that the group before us had checked out but never left. :confused3 We were given a new room right away and an apology.

I think its pretty strange that people would do that. But the CM said it happens all the time since the key card for the room doesnt change its "password" until the new group puts their card in the door. :confused3

Why check out if you're not going to leave?

We stayed at POR a couple weeks ago. We did online check in and sped thru the checkin process. We were given our KTTW and off we went. We get to our room and walk in to find it was occupied! Sippy cups on the table beds unmade and luggage! We quickly closed the door and trekked back to the front desk. We told another CM what happened and he told us he was sorry for the mixup. Asked who checked us in and assigned us another room.
Like nothing major happened. We were shocked! Anyone ever had this problem. I mean we let ourselves into someones room and it was treated as not a big deal! WOW!

I have never had this happen to me, but I have read about it happening more than once on these boards. I ALWAYS put the safety bar in place when I'm in my room for that very reason.

We stayed at POR one time. We were at that resort for 3 days of a split stay. There were 100 things that went WRONG in those 3 days - unlike any other Disney resort we have ever stayed at. Overlooking all of the little things - here's an explanation about our exit day...

It was about 9 AM. We were showering & gathering our things so that we could be out of the room before 11, and on to the next resort. As I was toweling off at my bedside, our door OPENED with a key to the world card. They couldn't get very far because we had our top latch on.

There were a group of young girls from a dance company who were going to be in our room. How they ever got the room # at 9 AM still haunts me. The fact that their key worked haunts me even more. We couldn't leave the room to carry things to the car because we feared that the girls would rush in on us. So - my daughter ended up loading the car herself.

We did call the front desk to complain, but they insisted that it was impossible that someone else's key would work at that hour. It was a nightmarish comedy trying to talk to the CMs. We gave up, left, and moved on. But - we'll always have this memory of POR. We haven't ever gone back to this resort. (The whole week had one mishap after the other).

We did stay at POFQ one time. It was very nice - with no issues.

Why write a letter now? :confused3. The mistake was acknowledged you were given an apology. Nobody has harmed or hurt. What are you trying to accomplish with a letter? It's amazing how people are always trying to get something for nothing in this society.

I remember this happening to us on our first trip back in 1997 at All Star Music. They assigned someone else our room the day after we had checked in. I was pretty young at the time so I don't remember exactly what happened but my mom and I were in the room because I was sick and I do remember being in the bed right next to the door and being freaked out when some random man was trying to open the door. :scared1:

This has happened to us several times, but not at Disney- sort of. Last time we were at WDW, staying at POP, we went to our room and the key wouldn't work. We peered in the window and saw that there was stuff in the room- suitcase, clothes, etc. Back to the main desk we went, to discover they'd given us the right keys but the wrong room number; they'd sent us to the 3rd floor when our room was on the 4th. No big deal, except the room was all the way in the back wing of the 50's section (building 2?), about as far from the main desk as you could get and still be in that section. We were hot and tired from traveling all day, and having to schlep suitcases back and forth didn't make me any happier. Never would have expected compensation, though. It was just an annoying error.

I'd just like to figure how to get out of the 1950's. Four trips to POP, 4 rooms in the 50's building, even when we twice requested a different decade! No biggie, we'd just like to check out the other buildings.

It happens more often than most people think. You can write to Disney, but they already know that this happens on occasion. The only reason to write them would be to complain again. Totally within your rights!

How many times do I have to say I AM NOT LOOKING FOR SOMETHING???If I was I would have made sure I got it then!!! I wrote the letter hoping to have this problem fixed. I want someone higher up to know this happened. I did not want to rely on the CM to report it. And YES I do think it should be reported. No I was not harmed in any way but I think there must be a way so this doesn't happen. I don't like the idea of leaving my room and someone could be given a key to it by mistake. Call me weird but I don't want strangers having access to my room! Sorry for the rant BUT I have had it with those who are implying I am looking for something that I am not. SHEEESH!!!

We were given an occupied room at BCV several years ago. I think it was around 2004 or so. It was a pain with 2 small kids in a double stroller, plus all our luggage, to trek all the way back down to the lobby inside the BC (because BCV doesn't have its own lobby) to get another room. I remember being very ticked off because we had already been waiting past check-in time. But I guess accidents can happen. Last year we had a similar issue at VWL. We got to our room and it was full of cigarette smoke so we had to go all the way back to the WL to ask for a different room. It's hard not to get mad when you're tired from traveling and all you want to do is settle in and unpack. If writing letters makes you feel better then of course you can do that, but I always say the best time to make a complaint is while you're there. Who knows if anyone will really ever read your letter or even care.

Wow, it's never occurred to me to wonder about this. We don't have Mousekeeping in every day as it's just the two of us and we tend to keep our room pretty clean and tidy so our Do Not Disturb sign is almost permanently slotted into the outside of our room door. I guess we could only hope that in the unlikely event that someone were to be assigned our room in error, this would be a 'warning' sign to the new guests that something was wrong. However it just further serves as a reminder to secure our valuables appropriately!

Never would have guessed this was possible. I would think the computer would have a safeguard of some sort to prevent it 100% of the time. I always use the latch but I am a bit concerned about when NOT in the room if this happened and someone that was not honest got in. Even MORE concerned that if the people occupying the room found out somehow and tried to accuse me of stealing or were there and worse happened in the confusion. Thank you for posting this for us all to be aware of. Luckily it seems to not happen a lot.

But what would they do? Steal your stuff and THEN go tell the front desk they need another room? Then the desk would know immediately who was in your room and took your stuff. Or would they steal your stuff, and then leave, and not do their own vacation, just because they happened on an opportunity? I just don't see that happening.

So, let me see if I've got this right.......on check out day, I check-out at the desk, but don't actually vacate the room.......next person is allocated the room and they turn up, but I'm still there. Providing they don't get to put their KTTW card in the actual lock (I see them coming and open the door??), my card still works. They then go back to the front desk and a kindly CM allocates them another room, and I get to stay for another night for free???? WOW, that's a huge glitch for WDW!!!!!!
