Obsessively Watching the Weather

IGOR was just upgraded to a tropical storm and they're saying it could turn into a "monster" of a hurricane and they aren't sure where (if) it will hit land!

EEEEEEEK! Again, EEEEEEEEK!!:scared1:

Try not to stress too much.

A couple of days before my 2005 trip, Hurricane Wilma was headed toward Florida. We discussed the possibility of canceling, but decided to go.

Wilma arrived about 48 hours after we got to WDW, and we ended up getting just the outer "fringes" of the storm (strong winds and rain for about 16 hours). They closed the parks for about 1/2 day, and kept everyone in their hotel rooms during the worst part of the storm. We never lost electricity, and the hotel was able to broadcast a voicemail message to all of the hotel rooms about the status of the storm and when the parks would open. Epcot and MK opened about 2:00 pm that day.

One of the benefits is that the parks were pretty empty (I think lots of folks panicked and canceled their trips) and the weather after the hurricane was spectacular! About 80 degrees and no humidity (compared to the 90+ degrees and high humidity before the storm)!

Closely watching Igor....my problem is that we live in coastal SC and DH is the manager at a beach-front club. We're supposed to leave the 18th for DW...even if it doesn't hit FL, if it looks like it's heading for us, he would have to stay. Not sure how I would break it to him that I would totally take the kids and go without him! :rotfl: But seriously - I don't think our trip insurance would cover that. Let's hope this one rolls off north into the Atlantic!

We were at WDW in Aug of 08 for hurricane Faye. We did get alot of rain some wind. We still had a great time amd it made it alot cooler. Don't worry

Oh my! Looks like Hurricane Igor is expected in the next few days. Let's hope that it heads North or fizzles out. If it hits Florida, they expect is the 20th/21st. This is too much stress for me. :sad2:

Sooo... I fly into West Palm Beach the 21st and check in to AK Lodge the 24th for a week... Whats everyone's thoughts? Should we be safe from Igor IF (hope not) it hits?

Thanks for your thoughts! I'm so nervous!

I'm watching & praying for no rain! It's only my 2nd trip to WDW & I'm super excited! Plus, I've gotten too many cute Mickey shirts to be covered up in a poncho!

Hi back! So glad to see a fellow Carolina Girl on here! :beach: :wave2: Riddle me this onescgirl - what's your experience with hurricanes here in the lowcountry? We've only been here 3 years and haven't had to deal with that yet...:scratchin

I'm a native, but in the upstate. I go to the beach 3-5x/yr.
The only hurricane that did damage in my life time, that I remember, was hurricane Hugo. Hurricane Hugo was 20 yrs ago.
I know it was the last hurricane that did damage. I would have to ask my parents about others before Hugo that I don't remember.
I guess you will always have to be prepared for the hurricanes come every season, but hopefully it will be a long time before another one hits the SC coast. Make sure you have a generator. I do remember how those were sold out in the whole state & surrounding states when Hurricane Hugo hit. People were buying all of them & reselling them overpriced.
Where are you staying at in WDW?

Yeah - we've heard Hugo was a doozie. I'm originally from Virginia and I can remember Hugo there. I've seen the video of what it did here - unbelievable. Thanks for the tip about the generator. We don't have one. I do have a couple of extra-large bins packed with supplies that stays in my hall closet, ready to go all the time.
We're staying at POR. We went back and forth between CBR and POR, but since we honeymooned at POFQ, we ended up at POR. I know, doesn't make a lot of sense, but our rationalizations rarely do! :rotfl: How long are you guys staying?

We're staying for 7 days. You can read my PTR, I have chp links so it's easy to read.

Was there when Frances went over and she went s o o o slow we were in our rooms for 2 days, it poured and was windy. They tied down furniture, saranwrapped lamps etc Though it was an experience, I still remember watching CNN at O'Hare airport for our layover and my DH asking, should we just go back home? We had gone for 6 days the year before and added 2 more days this trip and spent them in the room playing cards and watching the movies they were playing, it was an interesting and memorable trip for sure. We don't have hurricanes up here, though tornados can be oh so scary

I wouldn't worry to much about igor and julia, the projected paths both take them up the coast but far out in the Atlantic. Shouldn't be any direct hits or anything close like that. I'm going Sept 22-29. So far from what I've seen on the weather channel Florida and the east coast should be missed.
