Observations about the girls' attire for homecoming dance

Yes, it is definitely the new trend. When my stepdaughter got married in May, all the bridesmaids wore flip-flops. Some fancy, some plain. The bride wore dirty blue sneakers under her $600.00 dress even though we gave her money for new shoes.

My daughter got married last week and again, flip flops for all the bridesmaids. All were fancy ones. DD wore heels for the ceremony and flip flops for the reception with rhinestones and pearls.

Wow- I wish I could have worn flip-flops when I was a bridesmaid...my feet were killing me.

I remember having to get a pair of heels dyed to match my homecoming dress (back in the day ), what a pain in the neck that was.

I think it's a cute trend. More laid back and unpretentious. Austin is a very laid back kind of town and I've seen lots of flip-flops this year everywhere.

I don't have a problem with a nicer pair of flip-flops(a la rhinetones etc) for a formal dance. Comfort is a nice thing!!! I don't like the idea of old dirty flip-flops with a dressed up look.

When I got married, way back in 1991 I bought a pair of flat shoes to wear under my wedding gown. They were like ballerina flats, white,leather, with a cute little bow on the toe. All my friends were aghast that I didn't have o the high-heeled sandal or pump.

I wasn't going to be uncomfortable all evening at my own wedding! I had a long "pofy" gown on. Not one person saw my shoes until the garter thing, and even then, the shoe came right off.

She wore shoes to the dance, but once the girls arrive, they all take off their shoes and put on funky socks.

My bridesmaids & I did this at my wedding - hot pink socks!

I was at Olive Garden last night (Chicago suburbs), and it was bombarded with homecoming-goers. I did note that a girl had on a nice formal dress and raggedy-dirty flip-flops. I didn't know at the time that it was a trend.

Since I used to consider leg-warmers "cool", I think I am disqualified from criticizing this trend.

We wore ballet slippers at my wedding, dyed to match my dress. I would have LOVED the flip flop trend. I've never worn a pair of pointy toed or heels in my life. I'm big into Birkenstocks and the Lands End slip on shoes. It's all about the comfort with me. I work in a middle school and the girls will wear flip flops all year long. I get to wear them on flip-flop Fridays.

My daughter is only 5', so of course she always wears 3-5 inch shoes. But - she says that she usually shucks the shoes at some point in the evening and just dances in her bare feet.

She does wear the flip-flops all year round, in her day to day living, sometimes with toe socks.

My daughter seems to be a trend setter around here...or maybe she just reads the right magazines.....

but for those mom's who do not like the flip flop phenomenon you might like to know that I nearly passed out when my dd - 16 came down the stairs in a pair of beautiful patent leather (oops, after labor day!! LOL ) black and hot pink pointy toed 3 inch PUMPS and as if that wasn't enough she even had on black STOCKINGS!! She started with fishnet and decided that they were not elegant enough and changed to sheers...we had to borrow them since she has never owned a pair.

It was great. Although I am sure she took them off to dance.

the worst are the high heel flip flops, and no i don't mean nice ones. i mean foam and plastic with a heel!

My dd-18 wear flip flops with everything, but they are never dirty or dingy. She has an entire wardrobe of them in every color and style, rhinestones, pearls, sequins, flowers, leather, straw, velvet, denim, canvas, rubber; at every heel hight from a total flat to a wedge, to kitten heels, to 3-4" high heels. However, to her Jr & Sr proms she did not wear flip flops but very pretty heels, which she removed immediately after pictures. She probably would have been better off with a pretty pair of dressy flip flops.

Over the weekend the temps here dropped pretty low into the 50's and I made the statement "time to pack up the flip flops" (as I too wear many in the summer months). Well, I got the look of "have you lost your mind" and then the memories of her running out of the house in January with temps in the teens wearing....you guessed it flip flops.

I am getting married a week from today on the beach in the virgin islands. I have plain white chuck flip flops that I am wearing under my gown. You can't see them. I have heels that are the same height to wear at night on our cruise ship..... I couldn't manuever the sand and the grass in heels all afternoon. Have you ever seen a bride's feet in "formal" pictures?

beware. i was standing on the side of my foot in one picture and you could tell. my dress was just above floor length. i assumed no one would be able to tell. of course the first thing my mom said when she saw the picture was: "what is wrong with your foot!??"
