I have a cousin I haven't seen or spoken to in over 20 years. I have a half-brother I met once, when I was 4 years old. I have other cousins on my Grandfather's side that were arrested by another cousin who is a cop. Should I be held responsible for all of them if I choose to run for office?

Except that McCain isn't running on a platform of curbing abuse to the 911 phone system.

Obama is running on a platform that says the least among us are hurting, badly, and it's our patriotic duty to be unselfish and help them by giving Uncle Sam more of our money.

We used to do this primarily through extended families and communities caring for one another. But now we've developed a system, and a mindset, that allows us to turn our back on individuals in need and think we can abdicate that moral responsibility to help others by writing a check to Uncle Sam and letting him do the really hard work for us.

Am I responsible for their actions? No. Should I be held accountable for what they do? No. They are adults in their own right.

I have aunts and cousins that I haven't seen in close to 30 years. These are the sisters of the father that I lived with for my entire childhood. I am unaware of any of the details of their lives, but I'm quite certain that I'm not responsible for them in any way.
