Foreclosures are tanking the value of real estate as it is. You want to send Congress an extra $100 annually and save the value of your home or knock 30% off your potential selling price, keep that Benjamin Franklin in your pocket and leave things at status quo? I've got a big house in Palm Beach County, so I certainly know which way I'd go.

Why are Democrats against affordable housing?

Our house appreciated 75% since we bought itand no, I don't want to send Congress $100-I don't want to send them 1 penney.

I'm sorry that your house and others may have depreciated.

Yours may have appreciated since you first purchased it, but unless you're in the extremely narrow minority, I'm sure it's been hemorrhaging money recently. If the government can do something to stop the negative flow of equity and the foreclosure crisis from continuing to topple home values, why not let them give it a shot?

Nice houses in my area are dirt cheap right now, and can be purchased for 10% discount from where they were 6-8 months ago. Many homes that are listed just sit there on the market and never sell. :confused3 I only wish I wasn't too afraid to buy! :surfweb:

What are you waiting for, Zippa?!?! Pull the trigger and join the misery with the rest of America!!

Shortbun, there are a lot of us who realize that we are over 9 trillion dollars in debt, up 4 trillion since Bush took office. We went from a yearly surplus SURPLUS when Clinton left office (he was a Democrat) that there was a surplus while paying DOWN the deficit from the previous republican administration that left office... Now we are running a yearly deficit with nearly double the National debt.... thanks to the banks of China and Saudi, and god knows where else....

I guess there are some who really don't care that the Republican party keeps financing our children's and grandchildren's future while paying for their agenda, which does nothing for people who are middle class...

This is my point....it seems that some people don't care about the debt we are in. All this talk about raising taxes. HOW ELSE DO WE PAY THIS DEBT DOWN:confused3
Seriously....people need to get their head out of their butt and realize taxes are going up.....thanks to all the money that had been spent.

How do we pay it? Well, FIRST you cut all the unnecessary spending that is going on and when I see that they are actually making an effort to do that, I will pay more taxes. But to not even attempt to fix their mistakes, don't look to me for more money.

I don't have a problem with trying to help bailout those homeowners who actually live in their homes and need some help staying in them but I DO have a problem with bailing out speculators and flippers.

Same thing with education. I have no problem with trying to fix the education system in our country between those who live in the suburbs, inner cities or the rural areas to help to help them have a even playing field. I DO have a problem with him trying to tack on fully funded college educations as a "Birthright". Once the kindergarden to 12th graders are taken care of then we could look into higher education for everyone.

Raising taxes will raise revenue in the short term, but it is a very short-sighted thing to do as it is a disincentive to future production.

Empirical evidence shows (IRS Income Tax Statistics - http://www.irs.gov/taxstats/indtaxstats/article/0,,id=96679,00.html#_grp1 ) that whenver tax rates are cut, tax revenues to the treasury increase. For example, the first year after the Bush tax cuts, tax revenues inceased 11.2%. The 2nd year after the Bush tax cuts, tax revenues increase another 12.4%!

Well, how could this be??? I thought the Bush tax cuts were just a big give away to the rich! :confused3

Until people understand these basics about income taxation and its effects on productivity, it's impossible to have a meaningful discussion about responsible tax policy in this country.

Thanks for the stats which clearly point out the wisdom of tax rate cuts. :thumbsup2 Where people tend to bump heads on this issue is when some folks start thinking of tax rates as a matter of justice or fairness. That's when wrong-headed decisions about tax rates are made, all at the encouragement of a Democratic base that does not understand the impact of rate cuts.

I didn't want people to start bickering I just wanted some concrete answers- people are throwing numbers around I I just wanted to know what it means for my family -- Dh is an MD who works about 75 hours a week yes he makes just over 100k we have student loans we are still paying and will be for a long time (he has been in practice for about 4 years) I started staying home when daycare literally became more than my teacher salary (for 2 kids) we do not live extravagant lifestyles (despit what people think of doctors and their pay) I guess Obama worries me because i do not see things becoming "easier" persay for families like ours who are caught in the middle of a tax increase (rollback or whatever) and tax cuts for families. Not to mention that once everybody has healthcare I'll never see Dh again:rolleyes1

ANd would a flat tax give the govt more or less money anybody know --- wouldn't that be a whole lot easier???

I don't know about a flat tax, but the fair tax would seem easier.

Afterall, every American is an island unto themselves... That's the American way :thumbsup2

All you homeowners out there that bought in the last 4 years & have lost 25% of your home value, too bad for you! Fingers in ears, eyes shut :faint: Oh, and since you've saved so much, you can help pay the 9 TRILLION dollar deficit, 4.8 that your wonderful president added by himself...

I didn't say Americans are islands unto themselves but I'll be darned if I'll bail out people who make faulty financial decisions. Prices were crazy inflated. It's not my fault that they've lost value. It was bound to happen. Banks were loaning money-heck loaning-they were throwing money at people for mortgages so that they(the banks) could turn around and sell the mortgage for a profit.
When we had financial problems due to the oil market crashing in the 80's, we didn't expect the gov't to bail us out. We did it ourselves through saving and selling our larger house-which by the way had lost value as did practically everybody's house whose husband or wife worked for an oil company. The mentality that the gov't owes you (generic you) something is baloney.
BTW, I didn't vote for Bush, so even though he's President of the U.S., I didn't help to put him there.

Yes, because clearly weathly people don't work hard. I do not understand this train of thought at all. How exactly does he think that wealthy people got where they are today? By sitting on their butts?

Kristine

Very often, yes. Cause great granddaddy owned a bunch of hotels. Or ships. Or slaves.

I have wanted a flat tax or a fair tax for years but I don't see that happening in a very long time.

Things will not become easier either in the short term or long term. Please don't worry about everyone having healthcare, I may be a tad cynical but I just dont see that as a viable option with the current plan he is talking about. Actually, HRC had a health plan that would cover every American and maybe that would have worked.

How much were their student loans? Did they really just get paid off in the last 4 years?

Don't know, but an Illinois state senator only makes around $75,000. give or take. I suspect college loans to Harvard Law school may run into the hundreds of thousands. I'll be glad if our kids can pay off their undergrad loans by the time they are 30.

I don't believe that for onr second. There are way more people who worked for their money than just were born into it, IMO. I know many people who make what Obama considers rich and not one of them was born into it.

Take my boss for example, he is a partner in my company making a couple million a year. You know where he started? The mailroom! He worked in the mailroom, put himself through college and look where he is today.

Okay, don't let a portion of my name fool you. Our family is "working poor"....which many of us are...we make just under $100k per year combined. We live in the greatest taxed state available to US...New Jersey.

Here are my thoughts:

1. No more tax cuts, especially if you DON'T pay taxes or aren't required to due to your own "income" status/bracket.

2. Get rid of socialism. Why are the rest of the tax-payers required to pay for everyone else's needs? I'm not for "welfare" but would welcome "work-fare", get a job and if your employer pays you less than "X", then the US Gov't will send you a monthly ration of "Y" to compensate the difference. And for those who truly fall on hard times and don't abuse the "system", welfare will be there for you, but there is a cap on how long/how much you can get.

3. Social Security- what? When I'm old enough to retire (in 30+ years) the money I've paid in won't be there. Let's make it so that everyone who works and pays into SS gets to dictate where it goes, much like your 401k, it is my money that I have paid, why does someone else deserve it more?

4. Free education is K-12, anything else, is on you, period.

5. I think we could do away with the IRS if we had a flat tax. If you had say a Nat'l tax of 15% on everything, everyone (illegals included) would be pumping money into the Fed and we'd get somewhere. Then to create an "economic stimulus" they can issue a "tax free" day once per quarter, see how much money comes rolling in...seriously.

6. Medicaid should not cover Viagra, sorry if I offend all the seniors, but come on now, if you need it to help you, pay out of pocket, like those of us with allergies have to pay for Zyrtec.

7. Create a "labor list" for hospitals, doctors, etc. When you take your car to get a tire change or something, there are guidelines stating that the labor rate is "X" and cannot go over "Y", so the least you'd pay is this and the most is that. Make all c-sections chargeable to $5k to $20k (for complications). All root canals cost "X", this way the doctors are profiting from the insurance companies and the insurance companies are raping us.

I've got plenty of other ideas, but we do need to stop spending before we do anything else. And I know we need to help our friends globally, but charity starts at home. We can't even take care of our own homeless people, but we want to send future terrorists to school or bring them over here for education, surgery?????

Where do unnecessary wars for democracy fall into your plans?

Should we pay the teachers for K-12? Or should they pay for their own supplies? Should we let the schools crumble in rural areas? Should we teach to the bottom of the class or maybe expect a little more from the students? These days we don't expect too much

Should we repair say roads and bridges? The ones in terrible disrepair?

NJ is highly taxed, however, I'd have to say that it's not the highest taxed.

So for the C Sections that cost 5-20K, should the patient pay that because their insurance company decided they could drop them? Pregnancy is a pre-existing condition, give insurance companies the opportunity they will drop every pre-existing condition patient in this country & don't think they won't..... We can't get them to pay for our plan benefits much less anything beyond that... It's a continual battle. I have 3 insurance company's, I'm fortunate and we still deal with this crap.

Oh, and if anything above K-12 is on the parents or student, who, in 30 years do you think will be taking care of you in the hospital? There surely won't be many doctors or nurses available....
