Do you have a specific disagreement?

For starters.... Unless you are making more than a certain threshold (I believe it's about 200-250K), he is NOT raising your taxes. He is merely recalling the Bush tax cuts for those in the higher brackets.

Top 2%...everyone else gets a tax break...

Someone better tell Charlie Rangel (he's the head of the weighs & means committee. I saw him on an interview saying he ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT RENEW ANY of the Bush tax cuts. I make under 75K a yeara right now and that's going to cost me at least $1000 a year.

Yes, because clearly weathly people don't work hard. I do not understand this train of thought at all. How exactly does he think that wealthy people got where they are today? By sitting on their butts?

Kristine

Well I think its just fine and dandy that Barack and Michelle Obama was able to pay off their student loans, purchase a 1.9 million dollar home, have a healthy net worth put into different Ira's and savings. Now that he and his family have reached their financial goals and feel wealthy it has now okay for him to push "redistribution", especially since they earn close to 1million dollars a year.

I had to shake my head when I heard him say that college was an "American Birthright" and we all had a responsibility to pay for ALL children to go to school from K to College.

Actually it could cost a lot more if you consider the rise of taxes taken out of peoples paychecks for the increase of medicare/medicaid and social security.

[Btw, while I object strongly for my tax money being wasted on Iraq and other such foolish programs, I don't mind paying taxes. I get police, fire, 'national' security, education, roads, generally clean environment, parks, and tons of other stuff that doesn't even come to mind as I type.
And, if I need to spend some of those dollars to help others who don't have things, well, that's what a good person does./QUOTE]

I agree profdsny. :thumbsup2

Perhaps we also need to remember these tax changes are all subject to congress voting on them, are they not?

polineedyan, good point about reducing spending. How about we start with the wars and go from there?

Agreed, its federal spending that needs cut. The services you described are paid for locally, maybe with some subsities. Where's the fed income tax going?

Even at $79K, you still don't reach the threshold for an increase. FICA taxes will not change for that income bracket or lower.

The way you say it, the Bush tax cut plan should have never gone through because Sen. McCain originally flat out refused to support it. Rangel has his ideas, Sen. Obama has his. Rangel's opinion is just that, an opinion.

The way I read his tax plan is he will allow the Bush Tax Cuts to Expire. So everyone gets a tax increase. He will provide a $1000 for Couples making less than 75,000 and $500 For Singles making less $37,500. I believe this came from one of the debates, the salary ceilings. Also from one of the debates Obama admitted that he would let the Bush Tax cuts expire which would raise taxes for everyone above $ 75 K since they would not qualify for the Make Work Pay program listed above. I Don't know how Obama plans on paying for Health Care, Energy, Next Generation Broadband, Mortgage Tax Credit, Protect the Internet, Create a fund to Stop Foreclusures, Expand After School Care Funding, Expand the Child Care Credit, And So much more. He will do all this while still looking for a new church. I was wondering if he would even promise to come over and help me paint my house.

Rangel is IN CHARGE of the weighs & means committee. He clearly stated that his committee will NOT renew any of the Bush tax cuts, it wasn't an opinion piece. If I can find the clip on youtube this evening, I will link it here. (I am at work now and there are no speakers on my computer.)

What I mean is that the way you say it, a single member of Congress, even if he is the head of the ways and means committee, holds power equal to that of the President of the United States. I've read what Rangel has said. Just because Rangel wants it doesn't make it so. That's where my comparison to John McCain and President Bush came in.

Well, I certainly hope you are right but he certainly made it sound so 'matter-of-fact' like.

FYI:

Of his comment to Bloomberg News in September that he "cannot think of one" of Bush's tax cuts that merit renewal, Rangel said he was discussing the ground rules for broad-based tax reform to fix what most experts agree is an inefficient and unnecessarily complicated tax system.

"I was asked, 'Are there any tax cuts you would say you want to extend?' And I said no. And I mean it," Rangel said. "That's what tax simplification is all about -- determining what we're going to keep and what we're not going to keep. I have to say everything is on the table."

Does that mean the cuts that have so far saved taxpayers an estimated $1.1 trillion will not survive their expiration date? Rangel demurs.

"I'm 76 years old. I don't buy green bananas," he said. "Who knows what's going to happen in 2010? It just doesn't make sense, with all the problems we are facing, to be discussing the extension of tax cuts that don't expire till 2010."

This makes me so angry-we pay our mortgage and other bills, live below our means so as not to get into a bind should something finacially catastrophic happen and then we're going to have to bail out people who didn't think through their housing purchases? That is absolute bull!
Next Generation Broadband for whom?
Thank God, all this baloney would have to get through Congress and Obama couldn't do this on his own. I hope the Republicans get some gonads and give him hell on these IF he's elected.
And another thing, if the break on capital gains is not renewed and the inheritance tax cut is not renewed, I'm puttng my money into something the Feds can't touch. This is money we've earned and put aside for our kids and I'll be darned if it's going to Uncle Sam.

How much were their student loans? Did they really just get paid off in the last 4 years?

Foreclosures are tanking the value of real estate as it is. You want to send Congress an extra $100 annually and save the value of your home or knock 30% off your potential selling price, keep that Benjamin Franklin in your pocket and leave things at status quo? I've got a big house in Palm Beach County, so I certainly know which way I'd go.

How exactly are we spending money on this? The fact is that your not getting as much money from these people as you would like (or think your entitled to) but your not spending any money on them like you are the war. You just not taking as much as you want to from them.

Kristine

You're right, I should have been clearer. He believes you need revenue and funds (in the form of stopping tax cuts for the wealthiest citizens and stopping the war in Iraq) to pay for programs that you do want, so that you are not increasing the debt.

I didn't mention anything about what I feel I'm "entitled" to, but I do believe that the tax cuts introduced by Bush should not be renewed. I know it's not a popular opinion, especially with many of those it impacts, but I believe that those making over $250,000 can afford to be taxed at a little greater rate than those making $50,000, and I think most people making that amount of money were doing okay during the Clinton administration under a higher tax code. That's just my personal opinion, and I know that everyone has strongly held feelings about taxes. I just happened to agree with Obama and Clinton on this issue.

Our house appreciated 75% since we bought itand no, I don't want to send Congress $100-I don't want to send them 1 penney.

I'm sorry that your house and others may have depreciated.

Afterall, every American is an island unto themselves... That's the American way :thumbsup2

All you homeowners out there that bought in the last 4 years & have lost 25% of your home value, too bad for you! Fingers in ears, eyes shut :faint: Oh, and since you've saved so much, you can help pay the 9 TRILLION dollar deficit, 4.8 that your wonderful president added by himself...
