I'm more than a little concerned about some info going around about his upbringing. I'm told he's originally a Muslim with at least some education from the radical faction that wants us dead. He is downplaying that by stating he also spent two years in a Catholic school. I know it's a stretch (I hope), but some of you might be old enough to remember some early cold war speculation regarding communist "sleepers" imbedded in our society. At the very least, we need to learn more about him.

Obama is a practicing Christian. His wife and children are Christian. His mother was also Christian. His father, with whom he had almost no contact, was an agnostic man who was born a Muslim in Africa. His step-father was a non-practicing Indonesian Muslim. From what I have read he did attend two years at a Muslim school in Jakarta, followed by two years at a Catholic school - also in Jakarta. He was then sent to Hawaii to live with his maternal grandparents where he attended a prestigious private school. His middle name is Hussein (he is a Jr. named for his father), and the right-wing media have had great fun trying to use that to turn him into a terrorist. It is truly a pathetic stretch. I agree we need to learn more about him because of his relative political inexperience, but to suggest because someone's ancestors were Muslim he must be sympathetic to jihad is sick.

Well, I've been called "sick" before... but, before you get too defensive...

I'm not suggesting anything other than we should get to know this guy better, which would also apply to any other candidate relatively new to the campaign trail.

Going back about 50 years or so, there was a lot of concern about stories, real or perceived, about communist "sleepers" implanted within our society as children to be raised as Americans. The idea was that they would secretly be educated (brainwashed, or whatever you want to call it) to ease into our government and eventually bring us down. The whole idea went well with the fall-out shelters and all that paranoia that took some time to disappear. I never really bought into it, but the recent news articles did remind me of those days. I truly hope Obama is a good guy... we need some of those.

I also remember some stir about John F. Kennedy being a Catholic and how the Pope would have control over our country if a Catholic became president. Yes, people actually thought that. I guess they're going the Muslim route on that spin now. Yeah, I agree... kinda sick...

Everything will be better someday... I think.

So sorry. I didn't quote your entire post - it showed a thoughtful position. I wasn't referring to you but the willingness of the media to swoop in on ridiculous personal facts to stir the pot.

Between these two, I'd pick Obama but as of right now, my primary vote is going to Edwards. My second choice would be Richardson. In order to win in the general election, the Democratic candidate is going to have to deliver either a couple of southern or western states. I don't see Clinton or Obama doing this, while I believe that Edwards/Richardson could.

I didn't actually vote in PD's poll because truly my vote would be neither (although I personally like Obama.)
