I came across this and thought I'd see what some DISers either for or against Obama might think. I have said from the get-go that I heard lots of things in Obama's speeches that remind me of what I hear in church contexts. I ownder if non-religious folks hear the same thing. :confused3 This article puts it in words better than I could...

And Obama Wept
February 07, 2008 9:43 AM

Inspiration is nice. But some folks seem to be getting out of hand.

It's as if Tom Daschle descended from on high saying, "Be not afraid; for behold I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all the people: for there is born to you this day in the city of Chicago a Savior, who is Barack the Democrat."

Obama supporter Kathleen Geier writes that she's "getting increasingly weirded out by some of Obama's supporters. On listservs I'm on, some people who should know better – hard-bitten, not-so-young cynics, even – are gushing about Barack…

Describing various encounters with Obama supporters, she writes, "Excuse me, but this sounds more like a cult than a political campaign. The language used here is the language of evangelical Christianity – the Obama volunteers speak of 'coming to Obama' in the same way born-again Christians talk about 'coming to Jesus.'...So I say, we should all get a grip, stop all this unseemly mooning over Barack, see him and the political landscape he is a part of in a cooler, clearer, and more realistic light, and get to work."

Joe Klein, writing at Time, notes "something just a wee bit creepy about the mass messianism" he sees in Obama's Super Tuesday speech.

"We are the ones we've been waiting for," Obama said. "This time can be different because this campaign for the presidency of the United States of America is different. It's different not because of me. It's different because of you."

Says Klein: "That is not just maddeningly vague but also disingenuous: the campaign is entirely about Obama and his ability to inspire. Rather than focusing on any specific issue or cause — other than an amorphous desire for change — the message is becoming dangerously self-referential. The Obama campaign all too often is about how wonderful the Obama campaign is. “

The always interesting James Wolcott writes that "(p)erhaps it's my atheism at work but I found myself increasingly wary of and resistant to the salvational fervor of the Obama campaign, the idealistic zeal divorced from any particular policy or cause and chariot-driven by pure euphoria. I can picture President Hillary in the White House dealing with a recalcitrant Republican faction; I can't picture President Obama in the same role because his summons to history and call to hope seems to transcend legislative maneuvers and horse-trading; his charisma is on a more ethereal plane, and I don't look to politics for transcendence and self-certification."

Then there's MSNBC's Chris Matthews who tells Felix Gillette in the New York Observer, “I’ve been following politics since I was about 5. I’ve never seen anything like this. This is bigger than Kennedy. [Obama] comes along, and he seems to have the answers. This is the New Testament."

And behold, Obama met them and greeted them. And they came up and took hold of His feet and worshiped Him.

The Holy Season of Lent is upon us. Can Obama worshippers try to give up their Helter-Skelter cult-ish qualities for a few weeks?

At least until Easter, or the Pennsylvania primary, whichever comes first...

UPDATE: Let me be clear: I'm not saying there shouldn't be enthusiasm in politics. I'm merely touching on the fact that some Obama supporters' exhuberance seems to be getting a little out of hand. Obama himself joked about this at a Hollywood fundraiser, as noted in Men's Vogue:

“When Morgan Freeman comes over to greet Obama, the senator begins bowing down both hands in worship. ‘This guy was president before I was,’ says Obama, referring to Freeman's turn in Deep Impact and, clearly, getting a little ahead of his own bio. Next, a nod to Bruce Almighty: ‘This guy was God before I was.’”

I agree. Watching on Tuesday night - the chanting was a little weird.

YES WE CAN - YES WE CAN - YES WE CAN.

Ooooo kay.

As both a devout atheist and a die-hard Obama supporter, I love that so many people are excited by his campaign. Personally, it makes me feel something that I haven't felt in a very long time - pride. It's amazing to get that feeling from a politician, and I can certainly see why Obama supporters are thought of as being a bit over-zealous. I do think that it is genuine, though, and not at all cult-ish.

Yea, I know it's on the ABC website...But it's still just a pathetic little attention getting blog posting. :sad2:

Actually, if Jake Tapper was truly interested in blogging something that really mattered, he'd take the time to delve into all the possibilities that Howard Dean will have to consider should he have to meet with the candidates and come up with a nominee. Do people really understand what a historic, significant step that will be? Dean has been pretty clear he will not allow a brokered convention. Does he allow the super delegates to choose the nominee? Does he keep the voters in the mix? Lots to consider when the candidates are basically tied.

But, Tapper probably won't bother with subjects of substance. He'd much rather whine.

Technical error... I had a bad link posted, but it is now fixed. My bad.

I think that kind of element can enter into any political campaign. I've seen people in the last 7 years elevate George Bush into some kind of God that can make no mistake and do no wrong. Bill Clinton had the same kind of followers during his Presidency. I wasn't following it all this closely during the Reagan years but the way the Republican candidates have been fighting to pick up his mantle ever since says something about the deism surrounding him.

Obama's speaking style is clearly influenced by the ministers that he's been exposed to, by MLK, by Jessie Jackson...you can hear the similar inflections all the time. The case could be made that the critiques of his style are thinly veiled racism. I don't agree that it is, but I'm sure some will see it that way.

It's been a LONG time since we've had a candidate in this country that has lit people up the way Obama has. Are there people going overboard? I haven't met any in RL yet, but I'm sure they're out there.

Truthfully, that's the vibe I get too. But my perception is all screwed up because my ears sort of automatically perk up when I hear certain religious buzz words (goes along with the territory of my theological training I guess). And then there's my Republican tin foil hat that messes up things too. ;)

Anyhow, even though Obama's not my guy I think there's an authenticity among his followers that shouldn't be over-looked. I get the sense some talking heads pooh-pooh his younger disciples (oops, followers ;) ) by saying they are just excited and not looking deep enough. I don't know that it's fair to say that though.

JMO... It does seem to be a topic worthy of discussion.

I have grown so accustomed to political leaders using religious-inspired language that I hardly take note of it. The majority of the people in this country are people of faith and, while I am not, I respect those who are and do not favor a ban on public expressions of faith. I do get concerned when faith is used as justification for policy or to marginalize certain groups.

My opposition to Obama stems solely from policy matters. Otherwise I find him to be a marvelous, inspiring speaker who is a pleasure to listen to.

I have had the same feeling about him for a while. Its confirming to see it in print.

but how do you feel about similar idolotry aimed at other Presidents?

Personally, I think those stickers people have on their cars that say "W: the president" or whatever are kind of weird.

This was from this past Sunday.

I haven't seen the kind of rhetoric from other candidates and the response to it that I have seen from him. It is something that I had not noticed until his candidacy. He reminds me of a preacher.

I'm 54 and an Obama fan. I'm not a follower nor a disciple. lol! I'm a white, feminist, humanist, woman and people tell me that my contemporaries are supporting Hillary. Not where I live, or they're lying. I think people are having trouble deciding because it's such a toss up and we'd love to have them BOTH! I loved the speech he gave in New Hampshire and repeated part of on Super Tuesday. He's got vision, integrity, intelligence, humor, graciousness, humanism, spirit,balance.....and on and on. It's SO time for those qualities in a leader.

So people have something to say when people aren't energized and involved in politics and then they have something to say when people are enthusiastically behind their candidate? :confused3

I see no problem in people finally getting active and involved AND VOTING!

I guess I'm a cult member too then.

TO ME it seems quite different with Obama. But as I so ineloquently keep trying to say, I'm not so certain that's a bad thing, nor is it an automatic indicator of sinister "hidden agenda" undertones.

Well put. :goodvibes It is funny....when they need something to complain about, they decide they don't like the way Obama talks.
Yea, that's a great argument.:rotfl:
Last time I checked, it was OK for groups at political rallies to be enthusiastic. We do live in a Democracy, don't we?

I don't know what all the fuss is about Obama. If you like him, vote for him. If you aren't inspired by his hopeful vision, there is another choice. No reason to get upset. :)

I'm not old enough to remember the energy surrounding the Bobby Kennedy campaign, but I'm told - and have seen in several places - that the feeling is very similar between the two. I wonder if stodgy Republican types called his following "cult-like" back then, or if the label is merely a reflection of the cynicism in today's political world? Somehow, I suspect the latter.

Or maybe it's simply fear in some people that a popular president that doesn't bow to the Bush doctrine will manage to clean up the mess he's made...

Compare that to a McCain rally and you've got the latest meeting of the AARP members. Someone needs to tell McCain to get some energy into his rallies.

MTE. They were chanting through most of his speech. Too much, it was very distracting.

A TV broadcaster here commented that he sounded just like a Southern preacher.
I agree. Watching on Tuesday night - the chanting was a little weird.

YES WE CAN - YES WE CAN - YES WE CAN.
