Oh dear...I'm addicted. My fiance keeps bringing me some really neat things over from your side of the pond and these happen to be my favorite. I keep telling him he brings me these things and then I cant get them till he comes back.
When he was here in October he brought me some sweets made by Jakemans...so nice when I have a bit of a cold.
I know you all miss some of the things over here that you cant get there, but you all have some really great stuff that just might make me change my plans and move there instead of him moving here.

YUMMY YUMMY OATCAKES!!

I have to say I'm not that partial to Oatcakes personally. I find them a bit too chewy and tasteless. Sorry!

I'll swap your Cheeto's for our oatcakes, LOL

Oh cheetos....sooooooooo good but so bad. My DD always tries to sneak them, but she always has the tell tale crumbs on her shirt.

Im just amazed at some of the things you all dont have there and how many wonderful things you have there that we cant get.

I am sending my fiance and his boys some oreos next week along with their Easter baskets. They are addicted as well.

What is an Oatcake?

Lol...kind of like pancake. From what I know you eat them with more savory foods. We had ours with bacon, beans. eggs, and cheese with a bit of HP fruity brown sauce. All I know is I was in heaven. I can get everything here including the Heinz beans in tomato sauce, but not the oatcakes :sad2: .

lol- i see. I'll stick with regular pancakes and potato pancakes.

Oh I think I have misunderstood what you mean by oatcake!!

The ones I was thinking of are like crackers, small, round, brown and chewy. Strongly taste of bran to me.

I'm not sure if I'm thinking of the same thing as you from what you describe?

Here they are on the left served with cheese:

Nope these are definitely different. They are quite famous from the Stoke-on-Trent. I found a place that will ship them and they arent very expensive...but the shipping is $65.00. Oh well I guess I will have to wait till he can bring me more.

Sorry, cant help you.. but here is a receipe.
Oatcakes in most of the country refer to the scottish ones that are crispy and delicious too!

Recipe

You will need
8oz fine oatmeal
8oz wholewheat or plain flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2oz fresh yeast
1 1/2 pints warm milk and water, mixed half and half
1 teaspoon sugar

Method
1. Add the salt to the flour and oatmeal.

2. Dissolve the yeast with a little warm liquid and add the sugar. Allow the mixture to become frothy.

3. Mix the dry ingredients with the yeast liquid to make a batter.

4. Cover the batter with a clean cloth and leave it in a warm place for an hour.

5. Bake the oatcake on a well-greased griddle. Put enough batter onto the griddle to produce an oatcake about 8-9 inches in diameter. The surface will be covered in holes as it cooks. Turn the oatcake after 2 - 3 minutes when the upper side appears dry and the underneath is golden brown, and cook for another 2 - 3 minutes.

Scottish oatcakes
The Scottish oatcakes can take a variety of shapes. It is rarely sold commercialy; it more of a home-made biscuit. The method of making has changed over the last 60 years.

Oooh!! I haven't had an oatcake in years.

I remember having them for breakfast at my grandmother's, filled with strawberry jam or chocolate spread. Mmm... :teeth:
