Oasis of the Seas Cruise Trip Report

After purchasing our photos, Kellye went to the Schooner Bar to meet some new friends she had met on the cruise. Caitlin and Katie went to the gym, and Chris and I just casually explored the ship, enjoying our last evening aboard.

We had all agreed to meet at 8pm in the Windjammer for our last dinner, so that we wouldn’t have to spend as much time as if we were in the Main Dining Room. I got a little mixed up and thought it was 7:30, so Chris and I got there and found a nice table overlooking the sports deck and starboard side ocean. We waited a bit for the others, but decided to go ahead and eat at about 7:45. We finished up about 8:10 and looked for the others on our way out of the Windjammer.

There she was, Kellye at a nice table for 6, with her wine chilled and two glasses for her and me. Right after we found Kellye, Katie and Caitlin showed up. I apologized for the mix-up on the time and Chris and I sat with the rest as they ate.

This was our only Windjammer dinner. We enjoyed it. We found the offerings to have good variety and they were very good. We didn’t have a bit of trouble finding a table – lots of open ones. And the service is simply impeccable. Chris had ordered a coke, and when we left our first table and headed over to the new one with the girls, a server hunted us down to refill Chris’s coke. They also bring out little dessert treats, and the dining room manager visited our table just to chat at least twice.

After dinner, we went back and changed to our swimsuits and packed some last-minute items. As I mentioned, we used the Luggage Valet service. We had to sign up for this earlier in the cruise (I think by Wednesday night). They checked us into our flights on Friday and gave us special luggage tags. We had to have our luggage outside our door by 11pm (vs midnight for regular non-valet service). The cruise line then checked our bags in and we didn’t have to lug them around Ft Lauderdale all day, since our flight was at 4pm Saturday. Also, we had our boarding passes and got to bypass check-in at the airport. We were able to go straight through security and to the gate. It was $20 per person (not per bag) and very convenient. I believe this is a free service for some suite guests.

We explored the ship a little more, then got to the Flowrider at 9:45 for our group lesson. We were super excited that one of our favorite coaches, Stephen, was there with us. There were 8 in our group and everyone did stand-up. The night surfing is fun because they turn on the colored lights and it’s just a whole different vibe. We were able to improve quite a bit, and really had lots of fun.

About 15 minutes into the session, I looked up, and there was this guy sitting up on one of the rails beside the Flowrider. I recognized that it was – wait for it –

Jesse! (aka Mowgli)

So I introduced myself and Chris, then went to get the girls (who were on the other side of the Flowrider because they ride “goofy” (right foot forward) ) and brought them to meet Jesse.

It was really nice to chat with Jesse in between our turns surfing. He is an all-around great guy, and all of us Americans just love that Aussie accent. Jesse is 18 and had only been on the ship for about 3-5 weeks at the time (I don’t remember exactly). He said he was really enjoying it, but he missed being able to do some of the active things he did on land back at home.

Finishing off our vacation on the Oasis with a 1-hour Flowrider session was one of the highlights of the week. I would do it again in a heartbeat! Earlier in my report, I posted a link to the video that I made with us surfing (mostly from that night). I’ll post it again here, just in case you want to watch it.

After the Flowrider, the girls suggested that we hit the hot tub for a few minutes. So we went down to the cantilevered tub on the port side, and there was only one person there. The tubs are split into two “halves”, so we climbed in the other half. We hung out there for about 20 minutes, relaxing and reflecting on all of the cruise. It was a nice time to just chill out.

After the hot tub, the girls were really tired and I think they just went to bed. Chris and I ended up cleaning up again and heading to the casino. We had a great time there and met some new friends at the blackjack table. We won another couple hundred dollars (I think we were up about $300 by the end of the cruise) and stayed until about 2:30am. I kept wondering when they would shut down the casino, as I knew we had to be getting close to the port. I think the Oasis is usually back at Port Everglades at about 5am. But they didn’t shut us down. I know that after we left, they closed our table though.

We sat out on our balcony for a few minutes one last evening, talked about what a great cruise this had been, and eventually slipped off to sleep.

Next: Leaving Oasis (sniff, sniff)

I just spent the past hour reading through this TR! I was coming up with ideas for our next vacation a week or so ago and I came across the Oasis. I'm in love and your TR just made me want to go that much more. Even though I have never been on a cruise just looking at the pictures and videos on you tube lead me to believe no other ship would compare to the Oasis!

It is an amazing ship and it would be hard to find a comparison. I really need to find some time to finish out this trip report. I'm so close to the end!

Have you been on a cruise before? If not, for the price, I might recommend the Liberty of the Seas or Freedom of the Seas to start, then take Oasis or Allure for your next cruise.

Some complain about Oasis that there aren't many places that you can see water, so you don't always feel like you're on a ship. Didn't bother us, but it is a common comment. We loved the Liberty and are going back in October! We will probably book Oasis or Allure for 2011 or 2012.

Thanks for the info! I definitely believe our budget is more suited for a smaller ship at the time. How do you feel about Carnival Cruises? The ones I was looking at are on the Inspiration or the Freedom. I have been looking on Cruise Critic but I just can't seem to find a review that is similar to the one you are giving on here about the Oasis.

Just came home from a week on the Oasis. Oh my gosh. What a ship!! We had a great time, and I could totally see doing a back-to-back cruise on the ship. Let me just say that the Chef's Table is the best kept secret on the ship. Do not miss it if that is something you might enjoy.

Awesome review!

We wanted to go on this ship but it wasnt sailing when we wanted to.. so we are booked on Liberty of the Seas for February... very excited!! Did you love that ship? I see that cruised on it. I would love to hear your insight on LotS!

Do you love royal all around?

We really like Carnival. We were on the Conquest in 2004 out of New Orleans. After two cruises on RCCL, we have decided that the food on Carnival is better (in the main dining room). We noticed a different type of cruiser on Carnival than Royal Caribbean, but I think that may be because we were sailing out of a port that is drive-able to many people in the gulf states. Carnival has more of a party atmosphere, but you can also find your party spot on RCCL if that's what you like. If Freedom is in the same class of ships as Conquest, or if it is newer, I know you'll love it. I have been on the Ecstasy, and it's not my favorite layout.

I would love to do B2B on that ship, but I can't even fathom being away from home for that long. Once I get over that hump, we may just have to do that. I'd love to do Chef's Table next time!

We LOVED Liberty. We are so glad to get to go back in October. We consider it "home". It is very similar to Oasis, just doesn't have some of the flashier new items like Boardwalk and Central Park, and the AquaTheater. But if you haven't been on Oasis (and even if you have), you won't miss these things on Liberty. She is a huge ship with plenty to do, and is easy to navigate.

AWESOME!!! Im sooooooooooooo excited!!!!! 3 days of sailing.. 4 days in port!!! YIPPEE> WE have sailed Carnival.. which we LOVED. And Princess which I hated! Liberty seems like there is TONS to do! So were stoked!

How r the rooms on the liberty? We are on deck 8, balcony room.

Totes random questions...

Ben & Jerrys and Johnny Rockets are they extra?
I heard Johnny Rockets does an all you can eat $4.99 deal?

thanks for the info!

The rooms are fine. A little larger actually than the rooms on Oasis, but I didn't feel crowded on Oasis anyway.

Yes, Ben & Jerry's charges just like an onshore ice cream shop would.

Johnny Rockets does have a "cover" charge and it's all-you-can-eat. When we went on Liberty, it was right after a week with Norovirus, so Johnny Rockets was closed the whole week. But on Oasis, we had Johnny Rockets and it was very good. They brought out onion rings and fries before you ordered, and they were all-you-can-eat. The milkshakes cost extra though.

I recommend that you sign up for the Crown & Anchor Society while onboard and ask them if you can get the coupon book. Ours had 2-for-1 milkshakes in it! Also, on Oasis, Johnny Rockets serves made-to-order breakfast without a cover. Not sure if they do this on Liberty too.

Enjoy your cruise!

AWESOME! any other great tips you want to share?

Do we have to be up by 8am to get good loungers at the pool? We had to do that on carnival.

I'm not sure about the pool loungers. We were up at 8am anyway for the advanced Flowrider! :thumbsup2 I don't remember us having any trouble getting 3-4 pool loungers together at any time of the day.

I can't think of other tips, other than explore every nook and cranny. Enjoy the promenade. And while onboard, remember to take a deep breath and take it all in so you can enjoy it. In a blink it will be over!

Erm -- I bet this has been asked already, but does it cost money to book Lessons on Flow Rider?
Group Flow Rider lessons are $60 per person per hour, and you can do stand-up, boogie board, or both. Also, the Flow Rider (and a coach) can be rented for something like $475 per hour for up to 12 people.

Class size is limited to ensure you get plenty of water time. I think it was limited to 8 people.

Just wanted to let you know I'm all caught up...and the trip is nearly over! :confused3

I'm not sure I'll ever be able to talk Dianna into a cruise but after reading this she might be swayed!

I just found your report today. I really enjoyed it. It was very informative!

I am taking my husband and son (will be 4yo at time of sailing) to Hawaii on Rhapsody of the Seas next September, so I've been spending a lot of time on the CC boards, especially in the RCI section. I know it's a much older ship than Oasis, but it was still fun to read about your cruise.

That "plastic surgery" comment still cracks me up.

We are sailing on the Oasis Jan 8th. I just called and made a request for the Chef's Table. I gave three nights of availability, all days at sea. Did you have a problem getting your days? and I would love to hear more about your experience.
