Ny other suggestions besides driving it flying? Is there a train? Or a city halfway to stop for the night?

I realize it depends on what time of day you drive it, but it's only about 6 hours away to drive.

I lived in Santa Clara for 6 months in 2011. From my place to Disneyland was just about 6 1/2 hours. Add another 30 to 45 minutes from Oakland.

Google maps says about 6 hours 20 minutes so getting to I5 from Oakland International is much faster than from the 101 in Santa Clara.

What I did when I went down there was leave after work and stayed in the Super8 right outside of DLR. Got some rest and then went to the parks around 9am. No traffic at night but going back a couple days later, we left at 6pm and traffic was horrible.

Almost everyone drives or flies from the Bay Area to Disneyland, although there are some who will take Amtrak or a bus. It takes us about 6.5 hours to drive to DL. A train will probably take about twice as long because of stops along the way. I looked up a couple of bus companies and it looks like it takes about 8-9 hours by bus. Flying from Oakland is probably about 1 hr 15 minutes.

Depending on whether you drive down I-5, 101 or 99 there are many towns where you can stop for the night, such as Fresno, Bakersfield, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles.

The train would be awful because it takes so long and then I believe you have to change trains at LA's Union Station. They might have gotten better by now (though I doubt it), but the last I heard anything about the trains that went further south from LA, the trains TO Los Angeles would get in too late to catch those trains, so you have to wait and wait.

I would just fly. I don't like that drive. Especially since it mysteriously took us 13 hours to get from Santa Cruz (south of Oakland) to Anaheim on our first big family trip, and I should mention that I'm actually from the Bay Area and it shouldn't have taken that long. Late lunch at Andersen's split pea soup restaurant should not have added 7 hours to the trip! (still truly mystified)

The answer to the mystery, LA traffic. If one leaves from Oakland they have the option of taking 580 to 5 to Disneyland which is the fastest drive option, about 6.5 hours without traffic. From Santa Cruz there is no easy way to get to 5, so you take 101. Again, about 6.5 hours to Disneyland without traffic. The big disadvantage of 101 over 5 is 5 drops you into the LA basin north of LA, allowing you to skirt downtown. Traffic at rush hour can be bad, but better than trying to get entirely across LA, which is what you have to do on 101. Late lunch in at Pea Soup near Solvang puts you in LA around 4 or 5. At that time it can easily take 4 hours to get across LA on 405 or 5, sometimes more.

If driving, getting into LA between 3pm and 9pm is pretty much a mess. When I used to drive to family from the bay area we would stop for dinner at the relatives on the outside edge of LA. Then take off again for our destination near Disneyland at around 9. At that point we could get there in an hour.

Note to Winter travelers: Highway 5 closes a couple days a year due to snow. If you are unlucky enough to intend to travel one of those days your only driving choice is to head to 101 or wait a day.

So were arriving at Oakland airport at 5p on a tues, picking up car then starting our journey. Is there a suggested town about half way that we can spend the night or should we keep on going till we hit disneyland and about what time can we estimate to arrive? This trip is not until July so wondering about what time the sun sets. Thanks everyone!

If you're flying into the Oakland Airport, why not add a connector flight to John Wayne Airport (Orange County) which is the closest to Disneyland, LAX, Long Beach, Ontario or Burbank because it doesn't sound like you're planning a sightseeing drive from Oakland to Disneyland. If you need a car once in SoCal you can rent one at whichever airport you fly into.

The fastest driving route from Oakland to Disneyland is via I-5, but there is nothing scenic about it. Bakersfield is about 4 hours from Oakland, but you will be running into East Bay commute traffic when arriving at 5 PM.

If you take 99, Fresno is about 3 hours from Oakland, but from there it will take another 4 hours to Anaheim.

If you stop overnight on the way, you will have to factor in heavy traffic in LA the next morning. If you're going to arrive in Oakland at 5 PM, have dinner first, then head down to Anaheim after commute traffic lightens up. If you leave around 7 you'll probably get to Anaheim around 1:30 AM.

Is there any other recommended commuter airlines that flies between these destinations other than southwest? I am hesitant to fly southwest as I do not want to risk checking in late and my child having to sit by himself. Thanks

Jet blue can take you into Long Beach. Look on Expedia. Flying into LAX for a flight that lands around 7:30 would get you on the road around 8:30. By then traffic towards Anaheim should have calmed down.

I would look at all the airlines.
With sw you check in 24 hours out in case you don't know that.

Flying into Long Beach means a rental car or tax to get to DLRi; the shuttle options that exist for SNA and LAX don't work out of LGB.
