NyQuil...?

I'm no expert, but since they sell Nyquil over the counter here (not behind it with signature, like most of the cold meds), I really have to wonder if it's the same Nyquil that used to knock me out. I'd take a cold pill plus a Tylenol p.m.

It has the same "knock out" effect on me that its always had. Took some last night, in fact. I have a cold/sinus infection and needed a good nights sleep. Worked like a charm and I actually do feel better today. When I am sick I tend to not sleep very soundly and Nquil helps with that.

I do a mucinex and an advil pm. We must be from the same school. :rolleyes1

If you think it's congestion I would just pop an extra Benadryl. Sometimes for me that's the trick. For me Nyquil works, but I feel groggy the next morning. With 2 Benadryl or the aforementioned advil pm combo, I'm ready to go the next morning.

You could always do a shot of Jagermeister. It's about the same thing.;)

I love Nyquil. Works great for me when I am sick. I sleep great.

If you are concerned about being hyper as your mom mentions, try half a dose. That is what I do. :thumbsup2

Nyquil coma rocks:thumbsup2

Seriously...It is one of the few meds that I can take, and feel really better. Friday I came home feeling crappy. I took Nyquil for the next 24 hours, and when I woke up on Sunday, I felt great. Allowed me to sleep off my cold s/s.

No Nyquil for me. It actually upsets my stomach for a couple minutes after I swallow it. Then I get jittery and twitchy all night and can't sleep.

I love Nyquil when I have a cold!!! It seems to be the only thing that really works to help me sleep. I take a little less of a dose though- I don't take a full one. I don't know why, but if I take a full one, I feel groggy in the morning. With a little less, it seems to be perfect!

Same here!! I have to take a half a dose or I feel really drugged until about noon the next day!

If you don't like the drowsy effects, try DayQuil. Works great.

I tried that a few days ago, and it wasn't the same, I couldn't go to sleep. I think that's half of the charm of Nyquil, it knocks you out so you don't realize how crappy you feel.

It knocks me out and I actually got carded yesterday when I was buying some!!!

My mom gets hyper and can't sleep from Nyquil, but she has that same effect from other things that make most people sleep. Thankfully she didn't pass it down to me. When my dad died I actually took Nyquil for a few weeks because I was too stressed to sleep...it worked wonders.

I took a half dose of Nyquil about 20 minutes ago and I am starting to get sleepy and sleep will come soon!!

It knocks me out.

If you want something that REALLY knocks you out and you are totally oblivious to the world, Tyelnol PM is enough to holy cow, do NOT take that unless you definitely have a full night's sleep time. I took it literally ONCE and I really was unaware of anything until it basically wore off. The house could have burnt down, the kids could have woken up, you name it & I really don't think I would have woken up for anything. It was quite scary actually. At least with Nyquil, I'm asleep but I'm pretty sure if I heard my kids screaming or something I would be able to hear it. I'm not so sure with Tylenol PM.

Tylenol PM is good stuff. We use it when we are not feeling well and at times when a good nights sleep is really needed.

I keep it on hand, but I hardly ever use it. Motrin works for me and my family. I've noticed if we take it for pain and wrap ourselves in a blanket to get comfortable, we're very likely to fall asleep. Hey, works for us.

When I first became a nurse, I use to chuckle at elderly people who would ask for tylenol to "help them sleep". "Tylenol doesn't put you to sleep", I'd argue. But guess what? It does. And these people were right. Live and learn. Now I'm very likely to offer someone who's having trouble sleeping two tylenol, especially if they're having pain as well. It works.

My mother swears by tylenol PM. That works, too.

Nyquil knocks me out but whenever i take it i feel hung over all of the next day. i will take dayquil instead. no point in being sick an feeling hung over.

I thought Tylenol PM is basically tylenol plus benadryl?? NyQuil liquid works wonders for me but the liqui-gels make me very jittery and I feel like my heart is racing. Usually if I'm feeling really crummy, I can take NyQuil and sleep all night and wake up the next morning feeling a little hungover for a few hours but at least the stuffy nose, headache, cough are gone. Another favorite in our house is Alka Seltzer Night Time cold medicine.

I love nyquil. I get the caspel (sp) form and take one out of the two pack. It knocks me out, lets me sleep and in the moring im usally good after a couple hours.

Nyquil doesn't knock me out like it did back in the days when it was 25% alcohol - now its only 10% and just makes me slightly drowsy for about an hour. As far as cold symptoms go, it doesn't help me at all. I'd much rather do my grandma's home remedy - whiskey, honey, lemon juice and a little hot water. Works every time!:thumbsup2

Friends of mine in chiro school, the rare rare times they would react to germs with sick symptoms, swore by a shot of blackberry brandy, bundle up in blankets, and sweat it out while asleep all night. They'd wake up well!

I only rarely take anything like this, so when I do it's a very small dose. And after reading the ingredients of the liquid (gelcaps don't work for vegetarians), I realized just why it does NOT help DH. Guess what the sweetener is? It involves the words "corn" and "syrup" (though right now I can't remember if the words "high" and fructose" are also involved, or if it's just c.s.). That'll hype up many people; they just dno't realize what is causing it!

So it could very well be the thing that makes it syrupy and sweet that's causing the negative reaction. Same thing happened when DS's dentist insisted on some benadryl-type syrup for DS (ugh, never again!), before we realized his problem with all things including "corn syrup" in the name. Didn't calm DS down one little bit. He ramped up and up and up for HOURS, only to finally crash hard. And the behaviour DDS was worried about didn't happen, b/c doing work on littles is done in a private room, not in the main tooth-checking room with lots of things for littles who have never SEEN that room to look at!

Anyway, point is, might be a reaction to the INactive ingredients that your mom is having....

I made the mistake of trying NyQuil once and I slept alright. The next day I felt worse then the day after my wildest tequila-filled college night. The rest got dumped down the drain.

I know it works for some people but not me. I have gotten really good at preemptively avoiding any sickness and when I do I very rarely take anything that isn't a vitamin or tea. If I have to take something TheraFlu has been my choice as of late.

Dh swears by Nyquil when he gets sick. It really does work for him.

The Lat time I took it was on vacation in England. I woke up in the middle of the night, hallucinating!!! I've stayed away since then!:upsidedow

I miss that Nyquil induced coma, but I won't take it since having kids. I need to be able to wake up if they need me.
