Hmm... a Dis sleuth

I was reading through other cruise meets threads, and I saw you there. Wowee! What a great vacay you're going to have!

Oh Aisling. I am so sorry. I know you were looking forward to having him on the ship w/you. Do you and the kids still plan on going?

You must be heartbroken.

Hell yeah the kids and I are still going. I'll be on that ship even if I have to sell my body to science to pay for it!

I'm heartbroken for HIM. He always does this, misses out on the fun, he's too deep into his comfort zone to let his hair down. Yes, he has expensive dental work going on, yes if he has to go to the Philippines for his parents it'll cost a lot, but we can manage. I don't want to give him a hard time about it, though. But I really thought he was going to come this time.

I just feel sad for him, but in his heart, I really think he'd rather just stay home and do his tennis thing and relax and have some peace and quiet. He works long hours and he's probably looking forward to just chilling that week.

So his parents live in the Phillipines? Have you guys gone to visit?

A little backstory:

The last time I saw Mel I gave him grief and made him promise not to back out this time.

He agreed.

Brenda, does DCL do California coast cruises in between the Panama Canal cruises? My enquiring mind is rolling again~

I had thought of trying an EB Repositioning cruise but with it coming back during hurricane season I'm not so sure I like that anymore.

The kids will be disappointed, but not upset.

Mel's parents are doctors who moved here to the US in 1973. Mel was just a little boy. They retired several years ago after his father started showing signs of alzheimer's/dementia, and his mother began losing her sight from macular degeneration. They moved back to the Philippines where they have a home staffed with people to take care of them. Mel's father had been in decline since last year when we thought we were losing him, but he's still hanging on. They're both in their late 80s, and Mel is just preparing himself for the inevitable.

Mel hasn't been back to the Philippines at all since he came as a child. He doesn't really identify with his born culture anymore, since he's been here so long, he's as American as apple pie. He hardly even remembers the language. Last year we went through a big turmoil when his mother asked him to go see his father before his father loses memory of him and/or dies. But Mel froze and didn't go.

He has a hard time with change.

They did the 7 night Mexican Riviera cruises from San Pedro in LA this summer, Tigg and we were on the last one - absolutely awesome...
