Okay Everyone-

Our Anniversary Trip is less than one week away, and I'd really prefer to use the subway system if possible.
Taxis seem to be kind of expensive (maybe), and we would like to travel a bit further afield for meals, and just looking around in shops etc.

Our hotel is on W 46th St., and although I've been looking at the subway map, they have different numbers representing the same color subway line.
Also, we'd really like to make a trip to the WTC, and once again- they show a certain color subway line with multiple numbers in the vicinity. :(
So we're depending on all of you to help us out..... and make it so we won't be stuck in surface street traffic trying to get to where we want to go. I'd really like to get the subway system conquered, because DH is getting more into stage performances- and this might mean an occasional zip trip to the Big Apple. :teeth:

TIA!!!

Essentially they are different lines that travel along the same tracks through certain parts of their routes...they eventually fork and branch somewhere down the line. Also, in the sections where they run together (typically within Manhattan but not exclusively I think), some are express trains and others local .

Just make sure that you check the map and verify that the train you get on will stop at your destination. (So check the map and next to your destination it should read that, for example, the 4,5,6 all stop there(an express stop)...or maybe it's just the 6(a local stop)...easy!:)

Also...be aware of any track work that might restrict service to certain stops, as well as off-peak hours that may affect service etc...

Have fun.:)

If you give me specific examples of where your starting point is, and where your ending point is, either myself or others might be able to assist you :)

For example, if you are going to the World Trade Center site, you can catch the E, A, C, 2 or 3. Just give us the cross streets you will be at so we can better assist you.

Thanks lilboo ! :)

vickyBaby-

We're wanting to go to the NoHo Star restraunt, which is at 330 Lafayette St. (corner of Bleeker St).
The online maps say that (as the cab goes) it's about 3.1 miles from the hotel at 130 W. 46th St. If we wanted to take the subway, we'd either get on the (green) 4,5 or 6 line to get there. Am I right?
We're also wanting to go to the WTC, which would either be blue or red, but the map says that the Cortlandt St. station on the red line is closed (under the WTC- understandable). The E (blue) line gets there, but the lines don't seem to intersect.

We've done the D.C. Metro, the London Tube, and (believe it or not) the L.A. bus system- but this just might be a bit much.

I did download the map though, and I'll probably go crosseyed looking at it for the next week (actually less).

If you can point me in the right direction, that would be fantastic!! Do all of the stations have wall maps like the D.C. and London systems???

Thanks!!

First off forget the colors they mean nothing and once you get on the subway system it's all the same color GRAY. Pay more attention to the # and or letter. The # 6 stops at Bleeker Street, it's a local stop. DO NOT take the 4 or 5 it will not stop there.

You say your hotel is on West 46th street; 46th and Where? 6th, 7th, 8th Avenues????

Personally to get to the WTC area I'd take the 4 or 5 to the Fulton Street Station and Walk the 2 blocks.

Like Mary Anne said, the colors mean nothing. Additionally, we need the cross streets. Your hotel is at 46th and ????

I notice Mary Anne's location is NYC, so I will defer to her. I would assume she would better be able to assist you, especially if she lives right in Manhattan. Thanks Mary Anne.

Thanks vickyBaby!

Mary Anne-

According to Yahoo!Maps, the nearest cross street to the hotel on West 46th is 6th Ave./Avenue of the Americas.

Thanks so much for trying to help me out...... I'm starting to stress just a bit :(

At 42nd and 7th you can take either the 1 or the 9 (local) or the 2 or the 3 (express) to Chambers St. That will leave you about 3 blocks from the WTC. I'm not sure if all of those are still running down there but they are the orange ones on the map. The reason there are two each for express and local is, as was said earlier, because they go to different areas outside the city.

In either case, both the local and express stop at both 42nd St and Chambers St. The difference is only about 5 minutes between the express and local but as a city raised kid my philosophy was always "the less stops, the less chance for any nuts to get on!" (not to scare you or anything....) just some inbred NY street smarts!

We plan on going to the WTC during the day on Sunday (our anniversary)- hopefully we'll survive to see the Lion King that night......

Thanks Loubon!!

Now if anyone has any restaurant suggestions......... :teeth:

Trib-

The NYC street locater was only good for AVENUES, I couldn't poke 46th street into it and have it tell me where I needed to be.

Thanks anyway though......

restaurant suggestions?

depends on what you like. Carmine's is a great Italian place on 44th (I think) but if you like brick oven pizza, go to John's on 44th and 8th. Ellen's Stardust Diner is great for casual dining, and the entertainment is cool (singing waitstaff). La Cote Basque on 55th is wonderful if you want an expensive French dinner, order your soufle when you order your main course and you'llhave a great dessert. my favorite Chinatown restaurant is Peking Duck House, but I haven't been there in a long time so I can't really vouch for the place. the food at Mars 2112 is very overpriced, but the atmosphere is incredible. if you're lookng for a nice lunch when you're downtown near the WTC site, you can try Wolf's deli at 120 Braodway.

LOL, just had to say this sounds so NYC. :teeth: Cool city though, need to get there again.

Thanks Briar Rose 7457!

Those all sound like places I'd be interested in...... especially Wolf's near the WTC. I know that DH would at least like a bit of a bite before we get to the theater after our visit to the site.

I'm getting so excited!!! :Pinkbounc

disneyjunkie-

We really have no plans other than the WTC and the shows that we already have tickets for. I'm hoping to get to Central Park, and maybe some window shopping.

My other thread is "NYC Restaurant Info" ..... I'm looking for a special place for an anniversary celebration.

If you have some sights in mind, let me know!!
