I am cruising with my 3 kids. 2 are coming in on Greyhound from Boston, while my DS and I are coming in on Greyhound from Norfolk, VA. Our bus is an overnight, getting in at 745am. The Boston bus will get in at 1050am.

Since we will have plenty of time to spare, can we bring our bags to the cruise terminal, check them in, and then go back to to the bus station to wait for the Boston bus? I have a PAT of 11am. I'm not sure if I can check my bags before that time.

Port Authority is probably about a 15 minute, very uninteresting walk from the cruise terminal. But I guess if you're not sure if you can check your bags before your PAT, I'm wondering why you would want to go to the terminal and then go back to meet your other 2 kids? There isn't a whole lot to do at the cruise terminal, and you'd have to walk across a "highway" (there are crosswalks and pedestrian bridges), and there is more to do at Port Authority while you're waiting for the later bus to come in - there are plenty of shops and restaurants, and then you and the kids could take a cab with all your stuff to the cruise terminal. On a weekend morning at that time, it will take 5-10 minutes by car.

We just got back from a NYC 4 night DVC cruise on the Disney Magic. We arrived at the terminal around 9:00 am via taxi and it was open. A porter collected our bags outside on level 2 and we never saw them again until on the ship. From there we just walked right into the terminal and sat down. We took turns coming and going, went up to level 3 to take a few photos and walked around. They didn't open up the que for customs and bag screening until 11.

So yes, you can do this if it's something you really want to do.

The porters are right at the curb on level two and take your bags from there. You can get in the elevator and go down to street level and then go whereever you want after you check your bags. But, I do agree that there is more to do and a better place to wait at the bus terminal than the port. At least at the bus terminal you can get breakfast or coffee.

Sorry to hijack but anyone know rough cab time between port and Times Square?

Port authority is in Times Square. So from the port to Times Square is a boring 15 minute walk or 5-15 minute cab ride depending on time of day.

We rode the NJ Transit line in from NJ and hopped a cab at NY Penn Station to the port. It was a Wed morning, rush hour. Took about 10 min. wait for the cab and was a 10 min ride to the Manhattan terminal.

Are you from here? NYC Bus Terminals are no place to hang out with your family...Might be the last place I would spend time

Have you been to Port Authority lately, or are you making assumptions based on a visit long ago? I've lived blocks away for the last 15 years and walk through the PA on a daily basis, with my kids. The blocks immediately outside can be less than scenic, but they are as safe as any streets in NYC and the food options within the terminal are as good or better than the NYC airports. If you go out the 9th ave side you're in Hells Kitchen with lots of independent restaurants and bars up and down 9th avenue; if you go out to 8th avenue you're on the western edge of Times Square and across the street from the new New York Times building.

You are talking about OUTSIDE the terminal.

The poster you quoted (as well as the poster they quoted) was talking about hanging out INSIDE the terminal.

I HAVE been there in the past 6 months to take a bus to NJ and no, I would not say that INSIDE is a fun place to hang out.

I don't want to hang out for 3 hours either at the bus terminal nor the cruise terminal. I was hoping we could drop our bags earlier than our PAT and then walk around the city some. NYC is my 2nd favorite place to be in the world....3 hours is a good chunk of time for site seeing. Since a previous poster confirmed that the porters are there collecting bags at 9am, I am hoping they open for baggage collection at like 8am.
