NYC Hotel recommendations

The only two hotels I can think of with indoor pools and you would have to double check:
The Millenium UN plaza
Courtyard by Marriott Upper East Side
Now, there are a few with rooftop pools depending on the time of year:
The Travel Inn (the only hotel in Manhattan that offers free parking)
Hotel Gansevoort
The Skyline maybe?

As for the question about the hotel in NJ....please google the hotel and read trip advisor reviews. I would be leery.

Spent 10 days in NYC last summer as DD16 was taking a training program with the Rockettes. We stayed at The Buckingham, which is on 57th St and 6th Ave. Two minute walk to Central Park, 8 minutes to Rockefeller Center, 15 minutes to Times Square. Rooms were huge; it used to be an apartment building. We had a 2 room suite with kitchen and bath for <$200 a night with taxes included. Absolutely spotless, great location! We are going back again this summer and will stay there also. Check hotel websites for specials- that's how we got this rate.

Statue of Liberty- You need a timed pass to go either to the walkway at the top of the pedestal (just below the statue's feet) or all the way up into the crown. Last summer pedestal tickets were $14, crown about $3 more, I think. Statue Cruises (www.statuecruises.com) ferries are the only ones allowed to dock on the island; all others who advertise Statue of Liberty cruises are doing a drive by. Statue Cruises also stops at Ellis Island, which has a fascinating immigration museum (no additional charges). So... no charge for the ferry, but you need to pay for tickets to the statue. Staten Island ferry is free, and has great views of Lady Liberty!

NYC is huge, and it's a walking city. We walked (me and 2 teens) all over the populated places up until midnight and never felt unsafe. We weren't foolish- didn't venture into dark or empty areas- but the area bordered by Rockefeller Center, Central Park South, Columbus Circle, and Times Square was walkable up until midnight.

Serendipity III- think long and hard before spending money here. Food is mediocre at best, and expensive for what it is, even in NYC. LONG wait for table (an hour), and inside it's a little disconcerting and uncomfortable. Desserts are their specialty, and while the frozen hot chocolate was worth the $7 for the novelty, the sundaes were just sundaes, and NOT worth $12-$15 each. LOTS of better, more fun places to eat.

I live on the UWS of Manhattan, and we just rented a room at the Sheraton Manhattan for DD11s birthday, so she and her friends could swim!!!:cool1:

The hotel was nice, and kid friendly. 51st street and 7th avenue, so right by Times Square. Any problem we encountered was quickly resolved (only had no cold water in sink...maintenance came right away.)

We go every June and November and stay at the Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers a couple of blocks up from Times Square and love it there. They also have a sister hotel Sheraton Manhattan in the same area, which is a small hotel but has a pool. If you stay at the Hotel/Towers you can also use the pool at the Manhattan just be sure to bring your room key.

The Sheraton Manhattan on 7th ave comes up all the time on Hotwire for $150 a night.

Priceline is the cheapest site for hotels in Manhattan.
Hotwire is the next cheapest.
We have never paid more than $150 a night for 4 star hotels on these sites and have always been happy with the hotel chosen for us.

Just wanted to let you know I got the Doubletree Times Square for $144 on Hotwire for the end of March:thumbsup2 Now I'm on the hunt for a great deal for my anniversary. I think I will Priceline that one!

There is a Bronx Zoo, correct? is that close, expensive? Is it in a safe area? I'm open to any other suggestions of things to do also please.

I am not sure if you can do this for less than a week. Several years ago, we traveled to NYC and rented an apartment for the week. It was a lot cheaper than hotels and we had a full kitchen to cook things. We usually ate breakfast and lunch in the apt. and ate dinner out. With the cost of eating out, it was great to be able to cook breakfast before we went out. It was a very nice apartment and had a 24 hour doorman. The one we stayed at was about a mile from Times Square, but I am sure there are some closer. I just googled "vacation rentals in NYC" and then called to talk to the owners.

I love The Hilton Garden in in time square one of the few hotels in NYC with queen size beds and very walkable from Penn station.

My DS14 just returned from a weekend trip and stayed at the Edison. She room was nice. She was in a 2 room suite on the top floor. It was nice and clean. She said the room was pretty big. They saw Hair right down the street.

For what it's worth, she's stayed in a lot of hotels. Some not so nice to really nice ones.

They walked or took the subway everywhere except to and from the train station.

Yes!...
it is in a fine area...you take the 2 or 5 train to Pelham
Parkway, and it's a few blocks from there...You can also get an express bus on Madison Avenue if you are really concerned. It is a bit pricey...like $12 for adults, so know that a membership gets you into central park and prospect park zoos, and Aquariam at Coney Island for about 150 a year for the family, if you'll be returning to the city within a year...I believe Wednesday is still the FREE day, or pay what you wish.

Hi. Thank you but no we won't be back. I only went to NY once for the day. I really dont' know much about NY at all and I am the one planning and budgeting for all of us. I'm not sure how much time we will really have to see and do everything. I guess that we should come up with a list of desired destinations and rate them.

Thank you but we really would rather stay at a hotel. I cook every day of the year when I go on vacation I would rather not. We aren't really into fancy food so we'll just kind of go whereever. My girls and I love the apprentice so we will probably eat at the Trump Tower.

Just bumping for some more input. If you used Hotwire (which I Love), could you please list the ammenities listed with your hotel name - like better bidding does - it helps!
