Spent 10 days in NYC last summer as DD16 was taking a training program with the Rockettes. We stayed at The Buckingham, which is on 57th St and 6th Ave. Two minute walk to Central Park, 8 minutes to Rockefeller Center, 15 minutes to Times Square. Rooms were huge; it used to be an apartment building. We had a 2 room suite with kitchen and bath for <$200 a night with taxes included. Absolutely spotless, great location! We are going back again this summer and will stay there also. Check hotel websites for specials- that's how we got this rate.
Statue of Liberty- You need a timed pass to go either to the walkway at the top of the pedestal (just below the statue's feet) or all the way up into the crown. Last summer pedestal tickets were $14, crown about $3 more, I think. Statue Cruises (
www.statuecruises.com) ferries are the only ones allowed to dock on the island; all others who advertise Statue of Liberty cruises are doing a drive by. Statue Cruises also stops at Ellis Island, which has a fascinating immigration museum (no additional charges). So... no charge for the ferry, but you need to pay for tickets to the statue. Staten Island ferry is free, and has great views of Lady Liberty!
NYC is huge, and it's a walking city. We walked (me and 2 teens) all over the populated places up until midnight and never felt unsafe. We weren't foolish- didn't venture into dark or empty areas- but the area bordered by Rockefeller Center, Central Park South, Columbus Circle, and Times Square was walkable up until midnight.
Serendipity III- think long and hard before spending money here. Food is mediocre at best, and expensive for what it is, even in NYC. LONG wait for table (an hour), and inside it's a little disconcerting and uncomfortable. Desserts are their specialty, and while the frozen hot chocolate was worth the $7 for the novelty, the sundaes were just sundaes, and NOT worth $12-$15 each. LOTS of better, more fun places to eat.
