I'm normally a whiz at finding travel deals, but I'm at a loss. My cousin is getting married in NYC in early April. Air is still more expensive than I can justify, so I'm looking to drive from WNY.

Except, hotels are all really expensive, too. The hotel block is $400/nt, which I can't justify.

Does anyone know of hotels outside Manhattan with easy train access? The wedding is near Bryant Park and starts at 7 on Saturday, so I'd need a train line that runs late and commuter lines usually don't.

We're the bride's only family invited, but I can't justify spending the equivalent of almost two mortgage payments to attend.

Have you checked the Marriott site? We are staying in the Financial District at a Marriott property (Residence Inn, but had looked at Fairfield Inn) and were able to stay for $135/night. We will be there over a weekend (first weekend in April)

I stayed at the Hilton garden Inn on 8th avenue. Good location - short subway ride for you and not nearly as expensive.

There is a courtyard Marriott on the upper east side-92nd st. I checked rates for early April and they are around $200/night. It is a few long blocks from the subway but I would really just spring for a cab coming home. Easier than staying outside Manhattan.

hi @rigs32 I have stayed at The Wellington Hotel http://wellingtonhotel.com/ 871 Seventh Avenue at 55th Street, Manhattan. I just checked and the rooms are around $200 a night, alot cheaper than you have been quoted. It is technically walking distance to Bryant Park so maybe in a cab it would take about 10 minutes, depending on traffic. Would be a MUCH better option for you.

Our go to NYC hotel is the Hotel Edison. It's still not 'cheap' but is a lot less than $400 a night and is within walking distance of Bryant Park (we did it the very first day by sheer coincidence) and a cab home would be cheap. Even the Bryant Park Hotel looks to be around the $300 mark and you couldn't get any closer (and it's a gorgeous hotel)!

You may have already done this, but I'd post on the NYC forum on Trip Advisor too. I've seen lots of great information about hotels especially given on that site by the destination experts.

We walked by there and I was thinking about staying there next time. Nice to hear you liked it.

I just stayed at Hampton Inn Times Square Central and walked to Bryant Park. I paid about $135 a night but that was in February and it includes a nice free breakfast.

Last year we stayed at the Affinia Shelbune in Midtown. It's about a two-block walk to Grand Central and you can catch any train from there. The price for a two-room suite was in the mid-200s, but that was during spring break. They had smaller rooms that cost much less. Is there a chance that you could share a room with another wedding guest? That would bring the cost down.

There are some good reasonably priced hotels in Brooklyn close to subway. I always use trip advisor to get a feel for best hotels. Although for a wedding I would definitely want to be as close as possible and not be traveling in nice clothes and heels on the subway. A taxi might be best or a car service if you sav enough on the hotel.

You can take the subway home even all dressed up. Here is the new yorker's trick. Bring a pair of comfortable shoes to change into in a discreet shopping bag. Check it with your coat. At the end of the night change into your shoes. Who cares if you have to walk a few blocks from the subway now?

Try looking on Groupon. They often have NYC hotel deals.

I've stayed at The Hotel at Times square (there's also Broadway Hotel or something like that) for less than $150/night. It's not super close to Bryant park, but not a terrible walk either (thinking at the end of the night in heels - in sneakers it's a quite easy walk).

I use booking.Com to look for NY hotels. You can narrow down to the area you want. I usually try for Grand Central Terminal area, which is near Bryant Park as well.most hotels have no down payment needed and can cancel up to 24 hours ahead of ressie. What I have done is keep looking until just a few days ahead and then book a non-refundable rate and cancel my original ressie as rate will be quite a bit less.

We've stayed at the Courtyard Marriott Midtown East. It was super clean and the staff was very friendly. I remember the price being fairly reasonable too.

See if the Hotel Beacon has good rates for your time frame. Sometimes not, but when they do you can snag a room for aprx $200 a night. The studios (smallest room which is roomy by Manhattan standards) come with a kitchenette and it is across the street from Fairway Market so you could do your own breakfast to save a few dollars. It is about a block or block and a half from the 1 train, and has access to the west side bus routes.
