Nut Allergy & Question about Carnation Cafe

My 2.5 year old is allergic to tree nuts--he's not allergic to peanuts but is supposed to avoid them because they're often processed in areas where tree nuts also are processed. Anyhow, I'm looking (and drooling!) at the food pictures and the painter's palette at Carnation Cafe caught my eye. I think both my children would have a lot of fun with it...but of course we need to skip the peanut butter.

Is there flexibility there? Would they give us just jam and skip the peanut butter? (I'm doubting they have a peanut butter alternative like tahini though...right?) What are all of the toppings? Are they raisins, bananas, and mini marshmallows?

Thanks!

I am not positive on all the toppings, but I think you got them. I would personally recomment calling Disney Dining and asking about the peanut butter options. Their # is 714-781-3463. I know that Disney does everything possible to adjust meals for those it is necessary. A friend of mine is only allowed to eat Halol (spelling?) meats, and that was the # she was referred to for her and her DHs meals.

HTH!!

Definitely call that number and ask to be put through to Chef Chris. He's The Guy in charge of helping people with food allergies and issues, and he'll be happy to help you with information, and maybe even getting something special for you.

While he and I were talking, he told me that he had recently made a raw (not heated over a certain degree...not "raw" as I would think of it), vegan, lasanga for a customer following a raw vegan diet wanting to dine at Disney. If they can do that, they might be able to get you a substitute for the PB. (or maybe you could sneak it in to supplement it?)

We wanted to do the pallete, but I figured that if all of the PB&J is Smuckers like the Uncrustables are, they are loaded with stuff DS can't have. And we don't eat (nor could he eat) marshmallow, so it just wasn't worth it. Big bummer to us b/c it sounded like fun!

Thanks for the ideas. I've been debating bringing a jar of tahini with us to DL, but I'm nervous about the glass jar in checked baggage. I suppose I could decant it into a plastic container and quadruple bag it!

Or buy one at a grocery store once you're there.

Yes, I've thought of that--we won't have a car but are planning on doing a grocery delivery. Still, a jar of tahini costs over $4 at our local grocery store (I assume more when you have it delivered) and we definitely wouldn't use all of it during our stay at DL. Thanks for the thought though! :)

You would need to get it into a plastic container anyway for bag check. As far as I know, the only glass allowed is for baby bottles and baby food jars.

My daughter has a nut allergy. I told the booking agent about the allergy when we booked our character breakfasts and they were very accomodating. She told us not to worry that they handle allergy request every day, that when we get there the chef will walk us through what my daughter can have and if there is something she can't have and we give him notice he will make it for her without the nuts. Having an allergy can be very scary at a place like Disneyland but so far they have made us feel safe. We leave in 6 days! I'll let you know how the breakfasts went!

Ah, yes, good point. I think the pps idea of putting it in some sort of plastic for transport is a good idea. Ziploc makes containers where the lids screw on. That might work and help prevent a mess if a lid "pops" off.

Call the number above. Tell the your concerns, situation, and what exactly you are wanting to accomplish. They will help you.

I have written about this elsewhere, but very briefly - I was on a very strict diet when life's plans led us to dinner at the Blue Bayou on my wedding anniversary with long time, friends from across the country that I did not want to make a big "to do" in front of while attempting to eat within my guidelines. The chef discussed on the phone what I could and couldn't eat, when we arrived at the BB our waiter was aware, and my special meal arrived without so much as a smidgen of attention being brought to my strict dietary needs.

Call. Talk to them. Disneyland is amazing in this arena. And all without making you feel "funny" about it.
